Yeah if you read the article in WaPo this was basically Vietnam Part Deux...

BTW we are now seeing exactly why everything collapsed...The Taliban gave amnesty to the Government and asked them to come back to work. The Afghan Government sold out to the Taliban prior to the withdrawal. (which was kind of known but this all but confirms this) Fucking cowards...

China isn't going to bomb the Taliban and try to install a puppet government. They're just going to recognize the Taliban as legitimate and give them money in exchange for the ability to develop mineral rights.

And sooner or later the Taliban will screw them. While they love money they also love power and sooner or later they wont want to be giving away that which gives them power (i.e. minerals) to a foreign country.

You assume the Taliban have normal motivations...they never have.

The Taliban are just another reactionary religious wackadoodle political actor. They aren't anything special. They're Republicans with higher intelligence.

They're not giving it away. They're getting money for it, money which will finance their continued stay in power.
 
They aren't the Saudis...money is not at the forefront of their agenda and they dont need money to have control.

I'm sorry, but I vehemently disagree. Money appears to be the only thing that motivates the Afghan warlords and tribal leaders. The ANA hadn't been paid in months and the taliban offered them an alternative. It clearly had an effect.

Taliban rule by fear and subjugation. They can do that with outdated weapons and God. And they will.

Saddam needed money for power...the Taliban has the opiate of the masses to keep people in control.

We will see...but dont expect much stability in the region.

Oh and I don't think there was a great solution here. Difficult position for Biden to be in. But I do know Trump would have been destroyed if he made the exact same decision.
