POTUS 46.10: A New Hope

There's lots of things one can "do" without being at work. Having money affords one the luxury to now do them.

And I just love how it was an economic imperative that the 1% get a $1.8 trillion tax cut, but we can't give $1400 to people making $75,000 because they " don't really need it"

This is truly the appalling part. People who don't need more money get a tax break, people who need it- let them eat cake.

Giving money to rich people does very little to the economy, as they can't/don't spend all of their income, but give the same money to people making less than $150k, and they will use it and it will cycle through the economy many times.

It would be nice if we had a better way to target the stimulus checks to the needy. The blanketing of checks is wasting money.

We dont need these stimulus checks. We still have our jobs. So its nice, but in no way necessary.

You know what would be faster and more efficient? Cut the checks to everyone. Stop this nonsense about the 50,000 families who make more than $x million. The real cost in the 50% of families who are getting cut checks. The means testing is just bad faith negotiating. They don’t care if it’s in or out. They just want to gum things up.

This is an emergency and means testing "concern" (from people who usually call that class warfare) is just a ploy to put grit in the gears. It's the usual garbage from the usual people that government directly relieving the money problems of real people by giving them the money they need is moral hazard.

We aren't falling for that anymore. When the last bailed out billionaire has been pendulated with the guts of the last "fiscal conservative" we may trust that again, but not before.

I would prefer to scale it proportionate to income. I don't need a check (nor do I qualify to receive one under either cutoff), but the woman who cuts my hair didn't get her first UI check until six months after she initially filed, and would've fallen behind on her house payments if she hadn't found a roommate. She definitely does.

That said, I can accept that debating this further doesn't solve the problem and that we should just ram this through and tell the knucks to pound sand.

I’m in same boat as you and completely agree. No need to get bogged down in the details. I suspect there are plenty of folks who might have been making good money until the pandemic started and are now skint. I would stick with the original criteria.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Just cut the checks and get them out.

This is why you don’t make a lick of sense. Susan Collins wants to change the criteria. Susan Collins wants the bill to be $600 billion and targeted.

The vast majority of my union members refuse to accept or understand this. They saw nothing from trump's tax cut, yet they supported it and him. God, or guns, or gays, or abortion, or the blacks and the browns, or smelly immigrants, or some combination of the 6 drive the political decisions of any of them that bother with politics. They will go to their graves with these same things controlling them, they only choose to associate with people who also believe the same things, they don't read, they don't seek out an alternate source of information, and most importantly, THEY ARE TEACHING THEIR CHILDREN THE SAME THINGS. I think this is because if more people realized or let themselves believe that at least 85% of this country is made up of wage slaves, the suicide rates would be even more astonishing than they already are.

You can do my work if you want.

I have never had a job that didn't feel like a complete waste of time.

I haven't either. Even if I liked my job (one in my entire life) or if I thought I was doing something meaningful (labor union work) it all has seemed like a monumental waste of time. I can keep myself busy every waking hour doing things I love. Work has only gotten in the way of that.

Pretty ironic that one of them posted some rant about Democrats making people serfs v lords.

She’s trying to find a way forward and a solution. I don’t really understand why she gets stick when she’s the one trying to get things done. It really shows how messed up things are in our country when she can be one of the most unpopular senators.

How often did she vote in lockstep with Trump? How many disingenuous speeches about how Trump "learned his lesson" or confirming Kavanaugh? She might be trying to help now but that is only because she is in the minority and Trump isn't in charge. If he put forth Biden's plan she would break a him bending over so fast.

Just because she sucks slightly less than the average GOPer these days doesn't make her good.

The implicit 7th driver is "all taxation is theft," which is why they cheer when the government puts more money in the pockets of the very people who are robbing them blind. "Sure, I have less money now, but at least the gubbmint didn't take it, so I must be more free."

I'd simplify it to 4 drivers: God, Guns, Racism, Taxation.

Yup. It is obvious by the language they use now. It is all over the place. Notice how people are less and less being called "essential workers" by the Right? Notice how teachers are now "being selfish" because they want to be safe? That isn't an accident...

And some in the media are letting them use their platforms to change the narratives with little to no push back. That is how Rob Portman or whatever his name is became a "strong moderate republican" because he is quitting despite the fact that he voted to acquit last time and helped spread The Big Lie.

The people got screwed on the Wall Street Bail Out...this time its our turn. Time to forget Microeconomic theory to solve the problem and start using Macroeconomic theory. The Money Multiplier Effect is how we can juice things up here. Start at the bottom and watch it grow.

FWIW my gf and I would be right at the GOP barrier and we definitely need another check. We arent going to end up on the street but we each had to put more on credit than we normally do and we need to rectify that. (neither of us are frivolous spenders) People below us would be sweating if they own a home or have debts...salary is a terrible way to means test this anyways and only used because the lazy see the numbers and agree.

There is a way forward, and a solution. pass Biden's proposal.

that she comes out and says unequivocably that that's a non-starter, and then offers up the same GOP watered down counter-offer that they do to every Democratic proposal(see: Obama's 2009 economic stimulus package, ACA, etc) is all you need to know. She's just there to stop anything that might have a positive effect from being passed.

Who cares if she’s trying to find a “solution” and “way forward”? Clearly, other Senators are too. Doesn’t mean their proposal isn’t still complete f-cking sh-t. Put Sara “Dark Money” Gideon in Congress, and Manchin can be the conservative a—hole we all know he is, and we still have a $1.9 trillion package. Seeing as this is going to have to go through budget reconciliation, and Manchin is the key vote, $1.9 trillion will probably be more like $1.4 trillion, maybe $1.2 trillion. Still better than the $600 billion pile of sh-t Collins et al. came up with, but not as bold as it could have been if Collins were gone. Your concern about any liberal legislation rings completely hollow to me.

No, it shows how biased you are to home state Susan.

she’s a coward who has meekly mumbled something once or twice while being a Trump humper and grandstanding on Brett.
