They are really loose with money- at least all of our money- so that they can get rich. They are pretty fast and loose with changing laws- which is the opposite of being conservative- look at how many times they write laws to spite people. They claim to want to make government smaller and deregulate- and they have expanded the reach of government trying to reduce our abilities. Well, other than the regulations that hamper them to make easy money.

I quite agree, but they now so dominate the conservative space I don't think it is worth making the distinction anymore. I used to be a stickler for making that point, but it turned into No TrueScotservative and anytime anyone would point out the hypocrisy, radicalism, and heedless greed of the Right they would respond "but that isn't us."

I'd always thought conservatism meant respect and deference for traditions (for better or worse) and not necessarily opposition to new ideas, but a more slow and measured approach to them.

Conservative threads on reddit are interesting. They don't consist of any positive information or planning or any suggestions or improvement. They are 100% wall-to-wall screaming fits and flying spittle hating on their enemies.

Conservatism no longer appears to be a political movement at all. It's just hate. The people are finding their solace by screaming together about everyone they hate, which is anyone not exactly like them. I realize conservatism has been intellectually dead since the 1980s, but it's not even that. It's that conservatism no longer has any substance at all -- not even the pseudo-content of the Reagan and Bush years. It's purely emotive now. There are no nouns, it is adjectival.

Ultimately it boils down to a shift in the mid 60s/70s from the frontal cortex to the amygdala.

I wouldn't be so sure about that second sentence. The only reason they won't win the White House in 2024 is because they're running trump. I could easily see the white burbs going GOP again once he's gone.

Nobody votes like that anymore.

The parties have become a melodrama. The Republicans are fascists, the Democrats are fighting against the fascists. There's no room for other political calculations inside that, it trumps every other consideration.

Nobody's voting on the economy or on terrorism. One side is voting to preserve democracy and a America of the principles of the Declaration, and the other is voting for an apartheid state and an Amerika of an ethnic-religious identity, as if we were Japan. Or Iran.

This is a moment when politics isn't political anymore, it's tribal. There's no compromise -- one side wins, the other loses and is buried. I'm pretty sure we all know, in the long run, which gets which fate. They can try to hold back time but they've never managed it before.
