It does depend on the situation surrounding that war. It could, very much, be held against him.

BTW, on a veterans note- it's great to see so many ads on TV asking for people to donate to veterans associations. Since our government can't be bothered to support people who are willing to lay their lives on the line for the country.

If it is against Mooslims it is a lock.

And Kepler Booker is not Obama. (in many ways he is a better but not the ones that matter) They run him and the GOP will run on "Its another Obama" and all the haters that are abandoning Trump right now are back on his side. It is a terrible strategy. Plus, the guy just made headlines selling out about Prescription Drugs. Add in "Just Another East Coast Librul" and no...just no.

The Dems need to wake up, if you want Middle America back you cant keep up this crap.

This cant be just "well he is a decent candidate he should beat Trump" this needs to be "Who is our best" and have them front and center ready to go.

But in 2016 he could run on promises and his Image. In 2020 he'll have done nothing and even some Republicans will have sussed out that he's a con man.

The Dems just need a nominee who isn't Beltway Corruption Incarnate. Throw one of our lukewarm liberals up there -- Booker or Castro or Harris -- and we should be fine. Just stay away from the obvious landmines: anybody who reeks of the old order of Clinton, Pelosi, Reid. And get Obama out on the campaign trail to remind people what a president looks like and sounds like. Let Trump fall into the obvious trap of screaming at Barack while the nominee has open field.

Regardless of a person's deeds or reputation on the Hill, anybody named Castro will not win the national election at this point. Had it been Ramirez, that would be entirely different.

Franken would be the definitive test of whether somebody very smart can win. Typically intellect makes a lot of the herd very uncomfortable. But Franken does have charm, and incredible dignity.

I would love it if he ran.

No problem here with a Flyover Nominee. I'm not sure we're ever going to revive prairie liberalism, bit midwesterners aren't hated by any part of the country, the way pretty much everybody else (Northeasterns, southerners, Californians, Texans) is. What is the strong midwestern stereotype now? There's the Children of the Corn craziness but that wouldn't come into play with a Dem.

I only saw a small bit of Comey, but he and the Brit (Rogers?) seemed to be very politely saying "the President pulled that stuff out of his gaping as-shole, just like he does with everything else."

Nice judo move by the ranking member (i.e. the senior Democrat) hijacking the panel and talking about the Russian attempts to hack the election. Comey took it in stride and essentially said, "yup."

Emperor Whineyb-tch aint gonna like that.

Normally you would be right but Franken is a different animal. He is a known commodity because of his comedy and he is from the midwest and is very popular here. Plus he doesnt talk down to people like many smart liberals do.

But, again, those are already lost votes. The worry about large brain pols for the Dems is a knock on effect: they don't inspire the middle brains because they don't tend* to use Gipper catch phrases and sound bites. But the actively anti-intellectual small brains are in the other caucus-- we're not getting them anyway.

* Though nothing says they can't. Churchill was definitely bright as pols goes, but he was able to put things in pithy ways with enough power to really inspire the masses.

I think a lot of that is affect. Franken talks like a midwesterner so it's not perceived as patronizing. Likewise Clinton as a southerner. Northeastern liberals are criticized as patronizing even when they aren't -- it's just a bias. Middle America is so keyed up about supposedly being patronized by those mean old coastals that they read it into everything. It's like college sophomores reading everything as racist or sexist. It's on them, not the interlocutor.

Everybody is equally full of sh-t: working class heroes as well as university twits. Everybody is primed to be defensive towards those they believe aren't respecting them. Sometimes it really is warranted, but most of the time it's snowflakes just wanting to feel aggrieved.

Put starkly, Franken has the affect of someone genuinely concerned and telling the truth while Hillary has the affect of someone going through the motions and lying. Franken is listening; Hillary is just waiting for her next turn to speak.

Now Trump it seems puts out two completely different signals to the smart and the dumb. The smart (and this is both parties) immediately identify him as a liar and a con artist, and after a few minutes they realize he's a vain and stupid liar and con artist. The dumb appear to fall for him hook, line and sinker. While the rest of us are thinking "but it's so OBVIOUS!" they really eat him up. The thing that blew my mind during the campaign was realizing that it's not just people who like that he says outrageous and hurtful things, because they're malicious in the same way. There are some of those, but mostly he actually has people believing him. There's a sucker born every minute and my goodness this was a reminder.

I would say that the blueprint for Dems is the Bill Clinton formula. Franken could maybe aww shucks it up a little here and there enough to pull it off.

The problem to me for Dems is that the kind of broad appeal Midwestern Dem that really could win going away, doesn't seem to be what the Party wants at all.
