Re: POTUS 45:55: Wow, @CNN RATINGS HAVE CRASHED. LOST ALL CREDIBILITY!

So Democrats are so scared of losing their jobs that they won't do their jobs?
Why is the Democrats default position cowering in a corner saying please dont hurt me no matter what the Republicans do?
Cowering to bullies enables them...stand up to them.
You impeach Trump because it's the right thing to do...then in 2020 you take every Republican who voted against it and you hammer them with it.
You hammer them with why this doesn't meet high crimes and misdemeanors if Mueller said flat out he could be indicted if he wasn't president.
You make the election about right and wrong. But you do something. Go down swinging if you are going to go down.
But stop being cowards about it.

Yes.

Emerson:

I read the other day some verses written by an eminent painter which were original and not conventional. Always the soul hears an admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may. The sentiment they instill is of more value than any thought they may contain. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius. Speak your latent conviction, and it shall be universal sense; for always the inmost becomes the outmost and our first thought is rendered back to us by the trumpets of the Last Judgment. Familiar as the voice of the mind is to each, the highest merit we ascribe to Moses, Plato and Milton is that they set at naught books and traditions, and spoke not what men, but what they thought. A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the lustre of the firmament of bards and sages. Yet he dismisses without notice his thought, because it is his. In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts; they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this. They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression with good humored inflexibility then most when the whole cry of voices is on the other side. Else tomorrow a stranger will say with masterly good sense precisely what we have thought and felt all the time, and we shall be forced to take with shame our own opinion from another.

Irony acknowledged that I am quoting a passage admonishing us not to live by quotes.

Thanks FTLT. There's no rebuttal to your statement.

Well no, we already knew that as did the people. That didnt make people want impeachment then and it really doesnt now. That is Scooby's point.

So you don't hold people accountable for their criminality because "the people" don't want it?

If the roles were reversed, and Trump was Obama, the Repubs in the House would have started impeachment proceedings the minute the Flynn news broke.

But the Democrats, so spineless. "Let's think about the implications. What are the consequences of impeaching? Will more people like us? Or will they say bad things about me? Better mull on this for a while"

Eh, I figured it got buried somewhere between rehashing Hillary for the $Texas time and which thumb Pelosi should sit on while not discussing impeachment. :D

I love the plausible deniability:

And no one from his staff or Turning Point caught it? Everyone decided to let the emperor stand there with no clothes? *chefs kiss*

I read a book called "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories" when I was a child. Basically satire. In the "Emperor's New Clothes," when someone pointed out the emperor was naked, someone shouted out "no! the emperor is endorsing a clothing-optional lifestyle!"

That's how I've come to see Trump and followers. We point out the king is naked, they say "the king says clothing is optional."

If only. Instead they are just screeching, "no, you're naked!" Which both makes no sense and is imbecilic, but that's who we're dealing with now.

Yep. Dems cower while Reps do whatever they want regardless of the consequences.
How much is being blocked in the senate? And the dems do nothing. Trump and staff lie daily and have been proven to obstruct justice...dems do nothing.
But Mueller is the coward...and the "optics" of the hearing were wrong.
No... the response by the Dems is what's wrong. More words...empty words because they do nothing.

Also, did the GOP really suffer from the failed conviction in 1998? They still held the Senate, albeit by a little less; they put enough stain on the Clinton administration that Gore (sorta) lost; they put enough stain on the family name that it might have been one of the things costing Hillary in 2016. Giving up a few Senate seats is worth a decade plus of the Presidency.

A fair summary :

If anything they gained. Their overall power held flat bweteen ~1995 and 2000. That's when the power swung to the GOP (Senate, House, Exec, and Governors). They held it until 2008.

Edit: I've been working on adding state legislatures to my data, but it's hard to find data sometimes.

Impeachment was a fuking disaster for the GOP. Up until that point, and I realize its hard to even think about, but Republicans in the public's mind and in the media's mind held the moral high ground. As in they were portrayed, and portrayed themselves as holier than thou people upholding American values (think Reagan). As Clinton's team exposed all the dirty laundry of his accusers, something the media themselves refused to do, that narrative got blown to he ll. Furthermore, if you want to know why people from Gen X on are voting Dem, a lot has to do with the utter hypocrisy and corruption of the crybabies in the GOP who were mad at Clinton because he kept kicking their a sses in legislative battles. What saved the GOP was 9/11 which allowed the fluky Bush II Presidency to be re-elected until Iraq went waaayyy south. This led to the Obama Presidency, easily the most liberal since LBJ. I suspect the next Dem President will be even more liberal than Obama.

You guys are too interested in instant gratification instead of playing the long game. Despite total control of govt for 2 years, the GOP passed exactly one thing - gimmicky tax cuts, which they ALWAYS pass when they're in charge.

Our job is not to whine, as the American people like their leaders to be winners, not victims. Our job is to win control of govt in 2020 which is within our power to do so (unpopular Prez, favorable Senate map, already hold House) and then push govt further left than where Obama left off (as in even higher tax rates on the wealthy, further environmental standards, expanded healthcare). Exactly what form those goals take is TBD, but this is a marathon not a 100 meter dash.

Was it?

Between 1998 and 2002 they:
Won the presidency
Lost only six House seats (and a couple dozen over the subsequent years)
Gained three Senate seats
Lost two Gov mansions

That's not a disaster.

Re: POTUS 45:55: Wow, @CNN RATINGS HAVE CRASHED. LOST ALL CREDIBILITY!

I'm a little that way too, but if impeachment loses the WH in 2020, it's a no-brainer for me. There is too much at stake.

Now if the impeachment process causes dump to completely lose it, ensuring a D victory in 2020, that would be excellent. But playing for that knowing impeachment might mobilize R votes is a big risk. Ds should be able to work their azzes off and beat him without impeachment.

what if not impeaching loses the WH in 2020?

By rights they should have lost the 2000 election (lost popular vote, idiotic ballot design in FL caused Gore voters to vote for Buchanan, etc). Dems also gained 5 Senate seats in 2000 to make it a 50/50 split until Jeffords bailed.

Dems got reamed by 9/11. To not include that in the analysis of elections from 2002-2004 is like leaving the Iraq War out of the equation for 2006-2008.

Re: POTUS 45:55: Wow, @CNN RATINGS HAVE CRASHED. LOST ALL CREDIBILITY!

This was erroneously reported by the Beeb as Russia pranking Dump by editing the footage. Evidently that did not happen. This was, apparently, completely real.

And because this is the information age...

Which begs the question: Is there no one on the WH advance team that vets this stuff ahead of time to make sure everythiong's running properly?

Which begs the second question: If this administration can't pull off something as simple as this without a major screw-up, how can anyone in their right mind believe them capable of running a country?

I found a really good database during the 2016 election cycle. It might be connected with this but I don't think so. I'll keep looking.

Edit: boom

Exactly. No one likes a cowardly, mealy-mouthed politician who won't stand for anything.

That too, and I suspect the Ds are busy polling these questions as we speak.

Or was West Wing just Hollywood?
