The Republican Party is a pillaging machine for the .01%. Until they can make other arrangements they still need votes, hence the Republican voters have to be appeased but in some way that is free. So the GOP appeals to all of their emotional urges: anger, fear, bigotry, and hurt pride.

As the Republican project succeeds the country is hollowed out and their own voters are hurt most of all, so the appeals have to become more dramatic and violent to hold their prey fixed. The increase in violence assists the project as an excuse to limit freedom, overwhelm institutions, and criminalize dissent.
