Trump uses tariffs as president the way he used lawsuits as a crime bo... er...businessman: weapons of coercion.

Re: POTUS 45:53: I Didn't Appoint That Judge So It Doesn't Matter.

Question on political history:

- Is there any precedent of a society falling down a few notches on the political spectrum, but then having the course correct done in a non-violent manner?

It's just a random thought I had on our current political predicament. It seems that a good bit of the population realizes we aren't heading to greener pastures if we continue down out current path. We also have, at least on paper, the means to course correct the government through elections. I'm just curious if we're trailblazing in the same manner we were in 1776 or if there is a similar correction that has already taken place somewhere. Obviously there is a ton of precedent of using war/coups/assination/ect.

1932 elections come to mind. If you ever read the Winds of War and War and Remembrance by the recently departed (at nearly 104) Herman Wouk, he makes the case that FDR pulled off something remarkable. While the rest of the world turned to brutal governments in the face of the Great Recession (Germany, Italy, Japan, etc), Roosevelt managed to balance the need for radical action while preserving democratic government. No small feat given what else was happening in the world.

Would the transition between articles of confederation and constitution count? Trust me when I say I wonder/worry about the same thing. Nothing good comes from extremism.

I’d give them up for a reduction in the deficit/debt. At this point I’m more or less resigned to major changes coming in the next five years or so, and overall maybe it will be for the best.

I was going to post this article in the gun thread, but never got around to it https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/suicide-rate-america-white-men-841576/ It’s heartbreaking to say the least and represents most of the gun deaths even though it doesn’t get a ton of attention.

Hah...the Senate GOP told him they would block it and he backpedaled faster than a French tank in the 1930s :D

Basically what that means is they've approved of everything else. Sad.

South Africa. It fell from a relatively free society into fascism with the apartheid regime until liberals rescued their society through non-violence. It's corrupt AF but it is a democracy again.

SA is probably the most apt historical analogy to the United States. What's happening here is closer to apartheid than Germany in the 1930s. It's driven by runaway capitalism and the richest segment of the population, but it has kept all the window dressing of a democratic state.

Israel is on its way to fascism, too. We'll see if they can pull out of it.

Russia fell from the beginning of a democratic socialist republic to a repressive totalitarian state, then redeemed itself through liberal reform and was briefly a fledgling democratic state before being recaptured by authoritarians from the right.

I'm sure there are other examples. America itself has had a drunkard's walk through history often temporarily being a more repressive state and then pulling out of it due to the diligence of the left. This would just be an extreme episode of that except this time around the fascists captured an entire political party and leveraged the animal hate and fear of a huge segment of society. I assume if we can sweep all the democratic elections in 2020 the Republicans will be unprincipled, Dump will be a whiny little b-tch, and their supporters will fantasize about large scale violence, but they're cowards and civil unrest can't be done from the couch eating Cheesy Puffs. We'll see.

Ah, ok....

I genuinely didn't know if there was any coming back from a place where we are heading without some major disruption... But as a white, mid-30's millennial, I've also been raised in a time where there really wasn't any political strife that hit home and made me become politically active.... Political unrest is a new feeling for me....

Huh

There you have it. Trump is banning Trans People (who he loves and supports of course) because of all the drugs they use.

I need to take a break from the Internet. I thought it was because we were too weak and would make the military ineffective. Republicans also say trans people are too strong to compete as their gender. What is it?

I am quite certain Republicans want myself and my community dead. And for Republicans on this board, you say you disagree with Republicans' actions on this, but hey, you don't speak up. You still vote for the **** elephant because of THE BAY-BEEZ! For all I care, your silence means you're complicit. Silence isn't golden. Silence IS agreement with this administration's actions on LGBT+.

William F Buckley is glad you appreciate his thought up to the change. He always said in the face of the uproar and calls for boycott that letting the natural procession work itself out would be peaceful and longer lasting. That it was inevitable.
And here Kepler agrees :D

Bill Buckley was a hypocritical oaf on SA. He would have thrown away the key on Mandela because he experimented with Marxist rhetoric.

Buckley was a sincere man in some areas but on things like apartheid he was a completely clueless turd. His mindset was that of his class: better a thousand years of other people's misery than one night of anarchy for his portfolio. F-ck him.
