POTUS 45.5 - Sweden is Under Attack

Re: POTUS 45.5 - Sweden is Under Attack

Meh. Maybe it played worse watching it, but reading the transcript, it reads like a standard address to Congress. I don't agree with more than a tiny fraction of what he argued for, but nothing strikes me as particularly out there as far as his rhetoric. Especially compared to everything else that's come out of his mouth. Or his acceptance speech at the convention.

It's startling to me that reporting is he turned a page. The speech was three things.

1. Nationalistic.
2. A Coal Centered Economy.
3. Isolationist.

And what do all three of those spell? Fascism.

Apologist.

Re: POTUS 45.5 - Sweden is Under Attack

So I thought I'd dimensionalize the conservative bias in the US election process.

I think its pretty common knowledge that since 1988 (almost 30 years ago), there has been only one presidential election where the GOP has won the popular vote for president (2004). And there's a good chance that wouldn't have happened had Bush not won in 2000 on a minority.

Bias for conservatives in congress has in many ways been more stark. When looking at the Senate and the House, you need to look at 3 terms in order to get all Senate state elections considered. Over the last 3 elections, popular vote for Democrat Senate members and GOP Senate members has been almost a dead heat (GOP +3%). Yet the GOP has gained 18% more seats than Dems. Over the last 3 elections, popular vote for Democrat House members and GOP House members has also been almost a dead heat (GOP +3% also). Yet the GOP has gained 24% more seats than Dems.

We are a country of rule neither by the people nor for the people.

This may help

Best description I have seen is that it was the convention and inauguration speech, with the volume turned down low.

We might have to resign ourselves to finding this definition of Fascism in Scoobipedia. Not sure it's ever going to make Wikipedia.

Re: POTUS 45.5 - Sweden is Under Attack

I took the challenge (it got me a bottle of Crown on the bet) of someone and watched the speech with the volume off. I didn't believe it would be anything. Honestly, try it some time. It's amazing how much communication happens. Yes, the changing camera shots makes it difficult but the posture, the facial expression, and the hand/arm motions are so much about communications.

Observations:
- Trump was 90% on the teleprompter to his left -- looking into the Rs -- he was looking for, seeking, favorable receivers of his message
- When he looked the other way (his right, at the Ds) it was to look at (glare or smirk) at someone and didn't stay on that teleprompter long
- Trump was nervous! When he took a drink during one ovation he used two hands on the glass to drink -- I think he wanted to make sure he was steady and didn't spill down the front of himself*
- His gesturing was far less demonstrative than other times. He seemed to step back during ovations and collect himself. I'd have loved to see what was on the teleprompters. I wonder if there weren't "cues" ... < step back, collect yourself, stay in Presidential persona > ...
- From a strictly visual take, he almost looked ... Presidential?

Now, it's time to read the transcript. From what I heard on the radio this morning already, the R's should be PO'd because he wants to spend money we don't have on a bunch of programs that the D's should love but didn't stand and applaud. Plus, one guy on ND radio was ranting Trump mentioned nothing about farmers and ag. Like I said, transcript time.

One question for the rest of you: Who were the people dressed in white in the back straight out from the podeum? Remember, no audio for me so I saw and could only wonder.

*comment here from someone about Trump not having his sippy cup

Democratic women in the House are wearing white in honor of women's suffrage to President Donald Trump's first address to a joint session of Congress.

No. No. And, no. All his spending is cloaked in bills that are tax incentives and cuts for the rich. That's not spending, that's wealth transfer. That's why Paul Ryan was so giddy last night. He knows that.

We already knew he was pushing those things. The fact is he came across as Generic Republican more last night than he has at any point since he started campaigning. Which means I still disagree with his policies, but at least he didn't start WW3 from the pulpit with unscripted ad libs. (Again, this opinion is based on the transcript. I didn't watch so for all I know it came across worse in spoken form).

The only thing new last night that freaked me out is the immigrant crime registry. Now that is fascism at its finest.

Good thing coal is coming back cause he's destroying the tourism industry.

For the first time in seven years, New York City officials expect the number of foreign visitors to decrease, a drop they attribute to the protectionist policies and rhetoric of President Trump — saying that those moves are scaring off many of the visitors who have helped fuel the city’s robust growth since the last recession

That was so over the top I don't understand how people could see this speech in any other light other than that.

This is a good post. Very interestng.

The Members in white were the Congressional Women's Caucus. It was a reference to the suffragettes. I thought it was a striking and effective reminder that the GOP's policies are going to cause widespread harm.

Colbert nailed it.

Trump is in his dressing room singing "me me me me meeeeeeeeee." Colbert says, "warming up for your speech?" Trump looks confused and says, "This IS the speech."

Re: POTUS 45.5 - Sweden is Under Attack

It's frustrating that such a hypocrite who utilized foreign made products to build his empire is forcing an industry he knows nothing about, who already does the things he's going to require, to do something he never has.

But "Rah, Rah, USA," eh?

But then, a month from now, he can come on tv and brag about how all these companies are now doing this, because "he told them to".

The tone of the bit on law enforcement was pretty creepy as well. He got Dems to applaud for it because, you can't not applaud respecting law enforcement. But it was very much a nod towards a police state.

We've already forgotten the month ago controversies.

Like the conflict of interests based on properties.

I think the stuff the D's should have liked instead had them rolling their eyes to the back of their heads. If he follows through on some of it fantastic, but I think they viewed it with a healthy gulp of skepticism. Trump went out of his way to be an enormous d-hole on Obamacare early on, which I think kind of set the mood. It seemed like a lot that D's would like appeared out of nowhere, and I'm guessing will disappear just as quickly, but hopefully he was serious about it.

The R's are going to use those bills to transfer wealth to the wealthy. They're all tax bills dressed up as something else.
