You know Trump's Samsung Galaxy S3, the phone that won't take the latest Android update so it's not as secure as it could/would/should be? That one?

I sent an email to one of my Senators. They recommended that I contact Ted Leiu because they'd heard something was in the works. So I did.

Even repugnant speech is free speech. Note that no one is shutting you down (although here in this private forum they could).

Theft and threat of violence, those are crimes. I don't support criminal acts, nor should anyone.


And Milo? His free speech worked perfectly. He said what he said. And now he's reaping what he sowed.

Pedantic? I can take that. What's wrong with a meticulous quest for truth and accuracy? What's wrong with being given a piece of information and trying to understand it and understand what could be wrong with it?

That's not being pedantic. What you are doing is ignoring the ocean of truth in front of you in favor of a thimble of lie. Or with trump, the ocean is the lie and the thimble is the truth.

There is no honor in finding the thimble and holding it up as a defense.

This is basically how I feel. I watched the Vice show "Hate Thy Neighbor" segment on Swedish nationalist racists. They are YDFC males with the universal gripes of white racists everywhere, but added to that is reaction against European hate speech laws. So I posited to Dr. Mrs.: what are hate speech laws designed to curtail? Incitement which increases violence. Well, if white racists rally round hate speech laws as one of their martyr causes, reinforcing their isolation from greater society and increasing the odds they will dive further into radicalism and eventually commit genuine terrorist acts, those laws are potentially self-defeating unless they also contribute other social goods that compensate, such as making potential targets feel safer and toxifying hate speech so non-racists are aware not to perpetuate it.

I understand what hate crimes are trying to address, but if they generate more of the lunkheaded dangerous idiocy they are designed to reduce, maybe we should get rid of them and prosecute the hell out of people who commit violent crimes.

I'm not entirely convinced, however, since many who argue for eliminating hate crimes are transparently doing so for skeevy reasons.

But I still don't know how people misinterpret the concept of free speech. Law allows for you to say whatever you want. That doesn't mean that others have to like it and can't criticize it (criticism is also free speech).

Oh...and when you say 'it may well explain a portion, dare I say the winning margin, of November 8, 2016'...do remember that in 2016, Democrats won 5% more votes than Republicans in the presidential election and 9% more votes than Republicans for US Congress.

So we shouldnt have hate crime laws because people who are going to commit hate crimes anyways will use it as a reason to commit more hate crimes? Sorry I dont follow the logic there...the math for sure seems off.

For you to be correct you would have to assume that some of the jerkoffs doing it are doing it ONLY because of hate crime laws and that if they didnt exist there wouldnt be as much hate crime. that just isnt the case. Hate crime laws arent a trigger, they are a semi legit excuse (because everyone hates some law so they can relate) that racists and homophobes use to try and legitimize their actions to the normals who just want to understand and fix the evil.

Ignore Europe, look closer to home. By all accounts hate crimes or similar actions have been on the rise since November. (if you believe the FAKE NEWZ!!1!! that is) That isnt because Obama made some new law before leaving office or Trump signed some EO to make hate crime some super double time criminal offense...it is because the jerkoffs are emboldened now. THAT is what causes more hate crime...opportunity.

Lets put this a different way...do you think the fact that terrorists are treated different than normal criminals is why terrorists commit acts of terror? Of course not. Dont make excuses (or except the BS one they use) just because you want to try and understand otherwise you are really no better than clowns like Milo and Breitbart who look for ways to legitimize anything through the lens of their sheeple. It is like the people who see evil acts and assume the actor must have some mental disorder...no some people just act like jerkoffs...dont excuse it just cause you want to make yourself feel better.

We've been over this: Just because you win World Series Game 1 by seven runs doesn't mean you win the Series if the other side wins Game 2-5 by one run per.

Don't like it? Change the series rules; see Amendment V. Then again, given the current status of the majority of (and nearly the magic number of 38) state legislatures, I'm not sure a Constitutional Convention (called by the States) would have outcomes that many here would like.

I was also vaguely aware of a lot of the moving parts here, but it had to be put together for me from someone "in the know." The full story explains EVERYTHING about 3 of the 5 biggest Trump supporters I know. To them, Trump is simply a giant troll. The worst thing (for them) is that, the level of commitment required for actually voting for him en masse eventually generates real emotional commitment, and they've gone there. Their rear view mirror take on their activism and Trump's election is now an increasingly delusional self-justification of error. A confederacy of dunces. (iirc Ignatius J. Reilly has also been held up as explaining Trump voters)

This American Life had a similar segment in a pre inauguration episode that looked at the views of four or five different groups. One of them was the participants at the DeploraBall. Many folks proud of "memeing" Trump to the White House and one girl they talked to particularly in depth liked Trump because he was a real life troll. The reporter would go through his quotes and ask if she thought they were hateful and the girl basically said "yeah, but he doesn't mean it. It's kinda funny."

I've probably posted something similar to this in the past, but just as a personal opinion I believe that of the many ways we've gone off track with our criminal justice system in this country, two of the worst are victim impact statements and the "branding" of certain crimes, hate crimes among them.

I think the intent of branding something a hate crime is to stir emotions, and that is a mistake. You have no chance of ever rehabilitating someone stigmatized with that charge, let alone a conviction. It's like branding someone a pedophile.

Furthermore, there are probably certain society members for which the brand is a badge of honor in their "community." Why give that to them?

It's a crime. Whether it's assault, murder, shooting up a church, arson, or whatever, prosecute it and throw those clowns in jail. It shouldn't be the job of the prosecution to go out to the barn and round up the pitchforks and light the torches.

I agree. The crime is the crime. Never liked Hate Crime statutes.
