exactly, once the Democrats no longer respected the long tradition of the 60 vote requirement to get a bill passed, the toothpaste was out of the tube and cannot be put back in, well at least you'll never get the Democraps and republicans to do it, either could go back to honoring it, but neither will

The use of budget reconciliation only requires 51 Senators to vote in favor of the bill in order for it to go to the president’s desk for signature.

Republican Sens. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) immediately announced Friday morning that they would not vote for the nuclear option.

The retiring Senate President Pro Tempore, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), also said he opposed the idea.

Even if Trump somehow flipped the narrative to have the Dems own it (he didnt) the GOP will give just enough press conferences with out of touch comments like that one and take it right back.

When the Democrats lost the filibuster proof majority in the Senate, the House agreed to pass the senate version of the PPACA if it would be later modified. The changes the house wanted in the senate bill were budgetary, thus the senate drafted and passed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 using the budget reconciliation process. There is nothing "nuclear" about that.

reconciliation was not used to pass the affordable care act, but it was used to make budgetary changes to the PPACA which had already passed both the senate and house.

The Democrats went nuclear to confirm Obama appointees to federal courts (except the Supreme Court) since the GOP was insistent on blocking nearly _every_ nominee, which was pretty much unprecedented.
