It makes perfect sense. An election remagnetizes people back to the D/R poles. Dump says bad things about D, therefore all R voters favor him again.
The moment of election is ironically the worst possible time for people to vote as it is the moment when their programming most overwhelms the personal opinions they've gained from their life experience. The real world fact that Dump has been sodomizing the white working class is drowned out by the non-stop cultural fan service from campaigns and conservative "news."

It doesnt hurt that the numbers people care about (unemployment for example) are good. Any other president with those types of numbers is over 50%.
That said CNN has a poll the same dates as the NBC poll and has him at 41%. They had a larger sample size as well.
