I usually try to avoid politics in the office, but my sarcastic mouth got the ball rolling when my very conservative co-worker was listening to Rush this afternoon. Rush started ranting something about Trump, the Wall, and how congress was going to pay for it.
I smarmily said "Huh, I thought Mexico was supposed to pay for it."
Co-worker: "You really thought that? We're going to pay to build it, but Mexico will 'pay for it' by keeping their own people instead of having them illegally cross the border."
"I did. I was told the Mexican President was going to be like Ed McMahon with a giant cardboard check presenting it to Trump."
Co-worker: *laughing* "Oh no. We're going to recover that cost by not having to pay for the 30 million illegals in the US."
He went on using the same old Rush/Hannity/Jones Talking Points (TM)(C)(R) and when I said I only thought there were 10 million illegals in the US, we got into a debate on how legit the Obama Era Department of Homeland security numbers really are.
Here's where it got interesting. The conversation of the kids at the border came up. I said that they shouldn't have been separated. If they came as a family, send them home as a family. There is no reason to treat the illegal border crossing as nothing more than the misdemeanor it currently is. Co-worker stated that they risked their lives to get here, they shouldn't be here unless they come legally, so eff em. They deserve to lose their kids. They knew what was going to happen. When I said no, they don't, he quickly retorted that I "need to stop listening to NPR and listen to real radio." So he asked if I felt they should be separated, if they should be treated like they were, and I said "no, they're people like you and I, they should be given the same decency."
His reply? "If you or I chose to enter into Mexico, do you think we would get three square meals, a clean room, clean living conditions, while we await our arraignment? Why should we give *them* that luxury?" "(me: ) I'd like to think that we would be treated with respect, but reality says that we wouldn't." "So why should we give a sh** about them. You really have empathy for *those* people? For those kids? *laughing*"
The other thing that surprised me was how adamant he was on ensuring that the illegals "went home." With or without their kids. Because "We shouldn't be paying for them to live here, sucking us dry, taking our jobs." So I spun that, and then asked him if he was okay with the separated children living in the US, sucking us dry on the welfare system because they don't have a family anymore. "Yep."
I got a headache from watching the whiplash in his reaction to that. So a parent-child combination that came illegally should be torn apart, parent sent home, kid stays and becomes a leech on the system, and this conservative fellow was just fine with that.
Party of family values my a**.
