Re: POTUS: 45.37: The Earth is Flat and the Babies Are Crying

A public figure can never enjoy a moment with their family in public, then. Ever. Is that what you are all saying? I would like clarification of this. If they say "it's okay to do that" then yeah, let's roll. If they don't say that, it's ok? I do not agree with the latter.

Re: POTUS: 45.37: The Earth is Flat and the Babies Are Crying

Why do people assume student loan reform means defaulting?
Higher education cost is a real issue and needs to be addressed and having people default won’t fix that. Reform is a broad word, to me.

When you sign up for a loan, you sign to the terms. Pay it back, or don't take out the loan. Period.

And if you were unaware enough to sign to unfortunate terms, too bad. READ THE TERMS BEFORE YOU SIGN.

Pay back the principal or interest? One strange thing about the world we live in is the people who can least afford it get charged the highest interest rates.

If the person in question is "in the ring"/"on the ice"/whatever, fine. I do believe every person has a right to a personal life, away from their job. If Hill (who I obviously dislike greatly) were to eat at a cafe near me, I'm not going to bother her. Period. She's not on the job. She's there to enjoy a meal with her family. I'll let it be.

She's also a private citizen now.

It does need addressing. Total forgiveness is BS, IMO. You signed up for it, therefore you agreed to the terms.

For now. No, I don't think she'll run in the next election. The last election, no way in any shape or form, if I saw her eating dinner not on the job, would I harass her or voice my opinion. No way. She has the right of personal privacy in that situation.

No, there are first amendment rights here. The public has broad rights when it comes to expressing their opinions. Especially when it comes to government officials.

How else do you send a message, Brent? You know letters and emails get filtered through staffers, and usually just get you put on the jagoff's mailing list with no actual response.

I feel a person has a right to a personal life. I think that's the decent thing to do. Let them have SOME of their life be private.

Sorry, you forgo a lot of that when you become a public servant.

He can always resign.

You do. Any time you are at a govt place, or in attendance at a speech, or campaigning. Not when you are having a meal with your family.

Sure that's a great plan, it's not like people get arrested for protesting at his place of work. Oh wait...

That would be a different conversation, and I'd probably have different opinions on that. :)

Then call it higher education reform (or education reform) where mookie is front of the line).

Not student loan reform ;)

There's no moral component to a loan, so shove it. Wall Street understands that, even our otherwise moronic president understands that. They're a financial transaction, nothing more. You pay interest primarily to cover the risk that the loan is going to default.

One of the biggest problems with student loans is they are next to impossible to wipe off via bankruptcy, which is a problem with bankruptcy law, not the borrower. That creates an uneven playing field where lenders do not equally share the risk with the borrowers and have an incentive to lend far more than would otherwise be prudent.

Official X goes into restaurant.
Citizen Y enters restaurant to taunt/harass Official X.
Does restaurateur Z have the right to tell X and/or Y to **** and GTFO? Yup. Thus the 1st does not apply.

Outside on the street? Different story.

Edit: Sierra-Tango-Foxtrox-Uniform got the four-asterisk treatment. Who knew. :D

I wasn’t the one who said it, just curious why two of you immediately started yelling about defaulting right away when someone said loan reform

If you took the money knowing your intent was to never pay it back, well, I'd say that's an ethical and yes moral shortfall. And anyone who'd do that is well qualified for Congress. ;)
