And as I said, both sides don't need to be treated with equal validity. If one side is lying, twisting the truth and facts to make their argument, or is simply making an argument based on no objective evidence or facts, then it is up to the person reporting to also report that. You can't just say, one side says this, the other says that, it's up to you dear reader to decide. That's not how it works.

If one side is ridiculous, that needs to be reported, and why they're ridiculous. Cause there's a lot of stupid people out there.

This goes back to Handy's post, many many pages ago, which started all this. Both sides need to be told. And rufus' most recent post goes against that thought. This is the discussion, not about any particular issue at this time, but the approach to issues overall. Rufus just said only one side needs to be reported, if the other side is deemed ridiculous, lying, etc.

I have a problem with the singular issue of the audio of crying children. It was over the top to the issue at hand, a cheap ratings grab. Why? Because that is the obvious result of something horrific. Do you need to hear hostages tell you that they are scared?

Get to the issue at hand. AGAIN I POST: how are the kids being treated? What are officials doing about it? Who is profiting from this? Who is NOT standing up to fix this? Report all that. Don't be gratuitous.

If more Americans gave a 5h!t about the things that mattered, maybe your way would be enough. But it often isn't.

If there was someone out there that instinctively knows that treating innocent children like this is bad, but just can't be moved enough to care, and the type of coverage you are decrying changes them in some way that leads to positive action, then we need more reporting of this sort, not less. And in fact, human nature being the way it is, we actually NEED reporting of this nature to move some of us.

I don't and won't watch it. My stomach is turned by it and it often leaves me in tears when I do stumble across coverage of this nature. I don't watch images anymore of the planes hitting the World Trade Center. Can't take the horror or misery the images make me feel. But I don't need horrific images and sounds to move me to action. Sometimes people -- good-hearted people -- do.

We're not changing the mind of any trump supporters with ANY sort of coverage of ANY news story. But the non-voter, non-herp-a-derps out there need to be moved into action. Horrific images sometimes do that. It helped mobilize people during the Viet Nam war in the latter stages of the war to more actively oppose it. Of course then you could change minds on both sides of the aisle so it moved even more people. trump supporters are a lost cause. trump himself shooting a child would not change their minds about him, only make them twist themselves further into pretzels making excuses for him. They can all fvck off and die. But someone with no real political leaning might be moved into voting against the republican monsters by horrific coverage. The parents and children are already being treated miserably. If one ounce of good can come from the coverage it is worth the discomfort of comfortable people.
