I'm not against Rover on this one, either. The Best Seller List and the Top 40 are all the proof I need that ideas don't sell, boobs and splosions sell.

Yup.
He wanted to win and he played to win.

That was probably the biggest disappointment with the Clintons. They lost their fastball, so they got hit around by a Special Olympics team.

I'm sorry, but those are not marquee, election winning issues. Those are second tier concerns, looked at when the top issues are dealt with.

Money ("It's the economy, stupid.") and safety.

If you don't have a job and/or you're worried about crime (or worse) in your community the other stuff really is secondary. (And before you say it, the concern merely need to be perceived, not real.) It's how the human brain works.

Abortion, guns (for hunting, really 11!!1!!), and the ability to gay bash sure seem to be top tier issues.

Re: POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

Howard Dean put it best as DNC chair once when he said Republicans want you to tell you one thing they know about a couple of issues. Democrats want to tell you everything they know about every issue. Absolutely nailed it.

However, I also think Dems need to stop trying to change the minds of people who rank putting gays back in the closet for example as their #1 priority. Dems need to make a play for educated voters. That doesn't abandoning everyone else, but in terms of the electoral and Congressional maps maybe NC and Georgia are more important than getting people in Indiana to give them a second look.

Re: POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

Were I advising Bernie, I would have made it simple. Something like: Top 4 banks control 50% of country's deposits. I will pass law that says no one bank can have more than 5% of total deposits. This will force break up of big banks which will lead to better choices for consumers and more jobs. Competition leads to better service, and new smaller banks will have to be set up and staffed, leading to job growth across the country.

Now, mind you I don't know if either of these will actually happen, but they could. This is something tangible that people can sink their teeth into, not "Lets Reinstate Glass-Steagall!!!" when 99% of the population has no idea what the fuk that is.
And thusly a long series of loopholes and legal workarounds were constructed. What qualifies as a bank deposit, savings and checking accounts? Certificates of deposit can be classified as investments, which could be rolled over once they mature, which would reduce the deposit value at a bank. The same with money market accounts. Would investment accounts actually account against this 5% cap?

You see where I'm going with this. The financial industry is simple yet complex, and anyone trying to sell simple approaches are going to be met with glares of loathing by the Occupy crowds, along with anyone they can whip up on their sides.

Hierarchy of needs dynamic at work, perhaps.

But with conservatives, it can be more accurately described as fear of financial harm and fear of being harmed in other ways by others who are not like them. That is why they are more easily mobilized/manipulated than liberals.

housing is a big problem here, for both ownership and renting

first problem is Air B&B, homeaway.com, and other short term rental programs have basically eliminated the option of year-round rental here (there are some people still renting out year-round places, but not enough). When we hire a young single person, they want a place to live near work. The problem is a house in town can go for $4000 a week in the summer and a 1 BR place could be $1500/week in town. There is no financial incentive for a landlord to offer a yearly lease. They do weekly rentals in the summer, and then offer a cheap off-season rental the rest of the year. If our new employee starts in the off-season, they have no problem finding an apartment. But when that off-season lease runs out they are ****ed. These are $75K+ jobs, and the people can't find an affordable place to live nearby.

Home prices are skewed by the second home and income property market. My wife actually runs a non-profit that provides financial assistance to home buyers on the island. The buyer needs to meet some requirements (income thresholds, must be year round residents, and a percentage of household income needs to come from on the island). They have a couple programs. One provides assistance purchasing an existing modest home on the island, the other is an option to build a home (standardized design) in a development they have. In either case, covenants dictate how the home is resold in the future (to who and for how much), so the home remains in the program. This is currently all privately funded, and doesn't address the rental problem.

This isn't a housing bubble that was nation wide like the last one (last time even east bum**** Maine had inflated home prices, now those places have had flat or declining values for the past 10 years). House prices are out of reach for young people places where they can actually find work. In Maine, the housing market is tight in Greater Portland (economy) and along the coast (rich *******s).

The scary thing about what you describe is the people you are hiring are the top 1% intelligence wise. The situation around Boston is similar just without vacation homes.

Assuming you work for the lab I think it's a great move putting a lot of production in Ellsworth. It should make it a lot easier to find people for those jobs.

Re: POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

Companies aren't dumb. They know that being located next to a major metro area is key, but they have to balance that with housing costs.

They can't attract good employees if the employees can't afford housing.

Re: POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

Yes, cause we all know charity works and we don't need social safety nets in society at the government level. Let's just end Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, Welfare, CHIPS, right now and get it done with. Let's go with your charity model.

Just find it a little hypocritical that people are complaining about their own ill-gotten gains yet have to be prompted to give it up, and even then find some loophole to get out of it. But stick with your obtuse argument angle, maybe you'll find someone stupid enough to actually take your bait.

Or maybe people discovered it was all a giant lie. Just like Iraq.

So there's a Twitter push going on to have SNL hire Rosie O'Donnell to play Steve Bannon. :D SNL is doing a great job trolling the troll.

Look at Iowa. The entire state if mostly affordable, except around two or three population centers. Chief amongst those population centers for higher home prices is Iowa City, due to the size of the U of I. All of those professors have been building the McMansions, actually forcing urban sprawl.

yeah, that will help, but I don't think employment numbers are going to go down in Bar Harbor.

A lot of the production people are already traveling an hour each way to work, and there is no way most of them can afford to live on the island (unless they've been here decades). The lab has commuter buses from Bangor, Cherryfield, Franklin, Ellsworth

< white flag up, sincerely trying to explain >

How deeply do you care about abortion rights? Why?
It's those same internal forces* focused on the Second Amendment.

*Note I say internal forces so it covers both the logic and the emotion.

Abortion? No. Try the environment.

doesmt make my **** feel bigger like with the gunz, shrug.

Who the f-ck are these people? I have never met a professor who would build a McMansion. Well, maybe the B-School (because, let's be serious... that's a "professor" in the way that Trump has a "degree" from Wharton).

Professors live in charming little hobbit houses. Rich professors live in charming little hobbit houses with genuine imported Tuscan roof tile. The McMansion is the epitome of what the educated despise.

Seriously! They're doing an amazing job of getting under the whole White House's thin skin.

Maybe I've watched too much West Wing and Allison Janey, but Sean Spicer's reaction is a complete 180 from what I thought he would do. Walking in with a key chain super soaker then acknowledgement that "my first few weeks were rough, but we're all in this together," was apparently asking for too much of him.

Thomas F. Wilson for Trump.

West Wing is a painful rewatch right now.
