It was pretty funny to watch them pump the brakes on that.
It's any tool to hand with these guys. They are trying to prep the audience for when Dump goes full unconstitutional and halts the investigation to save his bloated carcass. They have their orders. Their followers have already all lined up and will swallow whatever "cause" they have.
Living with Dump is exactly what it was like to live under a dynastic autocrat. No intelligence, no mental stability, no competence, but his courtiers all sagely intone that he is right and good, and anyone who points out that the emperor has no brains is immediately hounded as a traitor and a danger to the state. And there is no shortage of quislings to man the bureaucracy to enforce the lies, corruption and idiocy of the ruling power. There are always some number (say, 51 Senators) who have the cunning to side with TPTB and say anything and do anything to ensure their own personal enrichment.

Honestly the stories werent out there long enough for me to even read them I just remember it trending for a bit. That was why every news outlet went to any prosecutor they could find and asked if this was kosher and every single one of them said "yep!".

Dump and his people change their story every time there is new evidence. In this case they mistakenly believed that they had controlled which emails Mueller got, leaving them free to lie in their interviews about the ones they held back. But Mueller had all the emails during those interviews. So Dump's people are all very likely guilty of lying to the feds.
Dump isn't used to playing at this high a level. He's used to his business litigation where money can hold the process up forever and where at worst you pay up under a sealed settlement and just move on as if nothing happened. This is his first brush with accountability in his whole life and he literally doesn't understand it. He's like some f-cked up psychology experiment where you let an infant loose in an unrestricted environment for 70 years and then see if it can pick up even the rudiments of personal responsibility later.
