This is very bad news for the GOP.

People as smug as the DLC acknowledging they don't understand voters signals the Democrats could be emerging from our 30-year post-Reagan PTSD to allow other voices and experiments, rather than just recapitulating the dreadful old formula of GOP Lite.

Experiments -- genuinely new ideas -- would reach a lot of voters. Trump and Bernie made it obvious that Americans are not ideological and rational like the French, they are romantic and emotional like Russians. Snapping out of our sullen Lowered Expectations and having messages more interesting and hopeful than warmed over 60s rhetoric about labor and race means getting normal people interested in politics as something better than holding their nose and taking their medicine.

The entire city of Houston (plus some) is represented in congress by 3 Democrats and 1 Republican, (Culberson, who voted for the Sandy bill) and Houston itself went for Hillary by 15 points.

If you can't better slot large groups of people into the right category you'll lose your party card.
Agreed, that's why it's annoying when people (the resident centrists, actual centrists not South Park "centrists") do this moral high ground thing ignoring the fact that a good number of the people suffering voted for the same person they did.

The best thing the democrats could do is allow diversity of thought into the party. Their my way or the highway approach has cost them dearly in a lot places and won't help them in the future.

We should let the free market handle it.

How would they do it? According to the news, a gross majority of the homes damaged do not have flood insurance. So the free market will do nothing. Other than have a bunch of people default on their loans as they are forced to rebuild their lives after a disaster that isn't their fault.

A government could actually cover the rebuilding- although even that will likely be limited. But it certainly will be more than the "free market"- who will take their decades of insurance payments and tell the home owners "tough luck- not part of your coverage". Really, the free market is going to make out like gangbusters- since they get so many years of payments, and, now that the house is destroyed- are totally off the hook. And they get to increase insurance payments thanks to this.

I knew this guy who was one of the most intolerant people I've ever known. A bigot who dressed up well. Heaven, to him, was white picket fences in 1955. But if anyone challenged his views, he always complained that he was the victim of intolerance. At first, most of us just thought he was being self mocking, but when it became clear that he really meant it, we just shook their heads in wonder.

Your trolling is bad and you should feel bad.

I'm sure he'll be along momentarily to insist that he was "just joking", har har.

See, you're much funnier when you're pretending to be sincere with your concern trolling "advice" to the DNC. That's a very rich statement, coming from a supporter of the "Party of No".

I was actually mocking certain conservatives who aren't always consistent in their belief of the free market.

It's your party! As I said, I think they would do well to bring more people in, but if they think they can exclude their way to power go for it.

Think pieces are, as a rule, inane. I'm not sure yet that this is inane.

The Antifa (violent eurotrash version)/anarchists who are committing violence are either very stupid young people (most likely) or Trump Nazis in disguise. By stooping to Nazis level they are only giving the Trumpies more ammunition. Violence is not the answer has been pretty clearly demonstrated about a million times (not to be confused with actual self-defense: which it hasn't been in the US)

Instigating violence should never be tolerated. But violence in the form of self defense should be swift and severe. Its like the old saying, I won't throw the first punch but you d a m n well better be sure I'm throwing the last.

I agree.

Last night, I was called a "Nazi Sympathizer" by many on the Twitter Machine because I defended the hate groups' right to free speech. Speech only. And of course, someone asked if I would defend ISIS in the same scenario. If they are following the laws of this country, and only using speech, yes, I would defend that right.

Once you run afoul of that right, then we have issues. Major issues. And as you said, I won't throw the first punch, but I'll be dammed if I'm not throwing the last.

At what point does the speech become unprotected? You can't yell fire in a crowded building- that is illegal. I would put forth that inciting violence, even if the person is not engaged in the actual violence, is not protected. Examples- the Cheetoh in chief telling people to punch folk at rallies, the ISIS folk telling 'believers to bomb, drive thru people', to give a few examples.

I believe the exact phrasing is "causing imminent violence or danger," something along those lines. If the whiteys want to wave their flags and have their parades, yelling "I hate (insert group)," that is okay.

Right but hurling out racial epithets and slurs probably strays into speech that isn't protected, or is borderline at best. That's not even getting into the far right groups bringing firearms. They have a right to free speech but there's limitations that keep being broken.

If they are bringing firearms lawfully, and (yes, it's close) speaking borderline speech, but deemed legal...I have no issue. Key words: deemed legal.

Do I *like* what the hate groups are saying? Hell no. Do they have a right to say it? Yes. Without a doubt.

I'd still love to see BLM show up bristling with weapons. The cops would have a conniption fit and conservatives would bend themselves into pretzels explaining why black guys with guns and a defensive message are inherently threatening while white morons with guns and an aggressive message are just a-herp good old second amendment fun.

But the way to effectively beat the Nazis, and for that matter the right as a whole, is pure non-violence. The saps who watch Fox will still get their steady diet of lies, but by now that's only a third of the population and everybody else will be shamed into recognizing that these white supremacist f-cks are a cancer and the people protesting them are just saying no fascism.

Not according to some of the folks I came across last night. Holy Hannah....they were as bad (qualifier: minus the race bit) as the hate groups. They were advocating violence. And I know the majority of the protesters are NOT like this. Unfortunately, this is what everything is leading to, and it sucks.

I think/hope you're overestimating support for the Nazis. I know Trump got elected, but I don't think the Nazis are a serious movement. If you're looking at the median of "the right as a whole" or 1/3 the populace you've got a guy that works at the County Sewer Authority 40 hours a week to feed his kids and maybe takes out his rifle once a year to fill the freezer. Not an active terrorist.
