I don't think Wikileaks is partisan as to party -- the whole idea of political party seems antithetical to their radical libertarian challenge to information predators like corporations, governments, and ruling elites.

It would be ok if they got played once. But they kept letting it happen. And there's not a single leak for this current administration, even though they are about as secure as a sieve. If the NYT's can come up with dump Jrs' emails, where is wikileaks?

By now, you'd think they would have realized that they got played by vlad. Doesn't seem like they care.

I'd like to believe that they don't have an agenda. It just seems as if their "radical libertarian" view comes down a lot harder on one side than another.

My theory is they publish what they can get and authenticate. If they got Trump's tax returns those would be all over the world in nanoseconds. But at the moment the bad actors who are willing to feed them data are all in support of the GOP because that makes for a weak America and a divided West.

Anonymous seems a lot more savvy (and decentralized) than Wikileaks and I'm genuinely surprised there isn't a conga line of data re: Trump streaming from them. I'd have thought the electronic trail from Trump's criminality would be as wide as the Mississippi and as easy to hack as a Diebold terminal.

Of course it is. We're eventually going to get Donnie and many of his associates for RICO and obstruction. Perhaps even treason, if Mueller is a true Boy Scout and doesn't shield certain friends and associates within his party.

If Assange goes to jail, now, I'm fine with it. It's one thing to expose bad government. It's horrible when it has an agenda for one side or the other. That's the kind of crap that Russia does or Venezuela just did.

That's because Assange is/was paid by Russia to behave that way.

If Russia was paying him to expose the Republicans, because the Democrats had a candidate they viewed as more pliable to Russian interests, they would've paid him to damage the Republican candidate instead.

This is the fundamental problem with conservatives who cheered on Wikileaks, or who say, "So what if Russia interfered? They helped prove to us that Hillary was evil!1!!1!". Assange is a mercenary for sale to the highest bidder, and it's only a matter of time until they leak dirt about a popular conservative that Putin (or China) doesn't like.

I don't think so. Assange certainly is getting the info re: the Democrats from the FSK, but I strongly resist thinking he is in their pay. The guy seems entirely sincere to me. He wants to expose the crimes of TPTB and he's trying to play them off against each other.

An interesting theory in WSJ the other day that Russia fully expected Hillary to win. The interference was more to weaker her position after she got elected.

I think this is the truth. Putin wanted to hamstring Hillary and was using the US right as Useful Idiots to do it. He must have woke up after the election and thought, "welp, I can work with this, too."

To a large extent, it wasn't really about who won or lost. It was about making the process itself look bad and unfair and untrustworthy. That way Putin can tell his own people there is no perfect system and so theirs really isn't that bad.

This describes what Trump is doing on Russia exactly. The whole thing done well, but here's the money shot:

I do not doubt that this is what the President’s advisors told the Post. Some of them probably believe that. It is also clearly not true. Or to put it more specifically, what is more likely is that the President doesn’t recognize anything he’s ever done as wrong. That’s not how his brain works. This is obvious from even a passing acquaintance with his life story.

The President feels threatened because he believes people are after him. In his moral universe, he’s right. They are after him. They are called criminal investigators and they are looking for evidence of something the President knows did happen. Look at Trump’s life history and you’ll see a clear pattern: things that Donald Trump does are right, praiseworthy. Things that hurt Donald Trump are wrong, bad. There is no consistent framework that exists outside of or prior to the actions of Donald Trump. (None of us are wholly free from a self-referential perspective on the world. In extreme, totalizing cases there is a rich clinical literature about it: narcissism and sociopathy.) So the President is doing what he’s always done: use every tool at his disposal to fight back and/or destroy the people who are ‘after him.’

It's more than a little chilling to think the POTUS could have such a personality disorder. But the fact that he could have exhibited those behaviors very publicly and for so many years and still convince 60 million people to vote for him as POTUS presents an even more chilling picture of voters. He will be gone at some point in the next 1-4 years, but they will not.

True, but it's more a testament to the power of spite and behavioral training. For every voter who was actively for Trump there were probably 9, if not 99, who were blindly thrusting a shiv in the eye of all the people they have been conditioned to resent for the last 25 years inside the Skinner Box that is the rightwing Echo Chamber. There's a reason why after he was booted from Hopkins for boinking his grad student behaviorist John B. Watson went on to make a fortune in... advertising.

He exhibits so many sx of his personality disorder that the Psych assoc stopped telling people they couldn't have an opinion. There was argument if it was ethical not to say what was so obvious to anyone who has the slightest training, if not warning people or speaking out was contrary to their oath. Of course they are lumped in with the elitist intellectuals (this is starting to sound like Maoist China) so are not to be believed.

It says a lot about Hillary too. I think if the roles would have been reversed the election would have had similar results.

It says something about Hillary: that she couldn't win an election in which both sides used a narrative about her. And what that tells me about Hillary is she was both a terrible candidate in her own right and she was hopelessly damaged by a 30-year campaign of fear-mongering and outright hatred of her husband, inspired by the inchoate rage of the right that he took the chair which Saint Ronnie had anointed and promised ever after to Republicans.

It also says the GOP has been emptied of all meaning except opposition to the other side, and judging from the fate of the Dems when they embodied that emptiness between 1984 and 1990 it bodes ill for the right. Thankfully.
