Honestly, I think this says a lot about the BSA, and just confirms my long-held belief that it has become little more than an extension of JROTC and a systemic indoctrination of future Republican voters. Kind of like how the NRA went nutso sometime around 1980, so to has scouting, and it's a damn shame.

Then you don't know your history, sporto. There are at least 2 other historical world leaders in the modern era that were worse than Hitler.

Impressive knowledge of Scouting - but not impressive enough. To answer your very initial question: because POTUS has *always* been the honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America since its founding in 1910. Since then, of the 11 presidents who were in office during the time of National Jamborees, 7 have spoken at them, starting with FDR in 1937. Ronald Reagan was supposed to speak at the one I attended in 1985, but he was busy having his colon cancer surgery*, so Nancy Reagan spoke instead.

*Interesting factoid: my uncle is the co-inventor of one of the first video endoscopes in production. They used one of his models for Reagan's surgery, so they flew my uncle and his partner down to DC for the surgery to be standing by just in case something went wrong with the machine. My uncle's partner's Christmas card that year was him shaking hands with post-surgery Reagan in bed in his hospital gown. I doubt any president would allow that picture to be taken now, but back then there was no way to share it with millions of people, so what was the harm?

Fair enough. I did forget that. But if they had the chutzpah to kick out gay scouts and leaders back in the day for not being reverent, surely they can kick out a leader who exhibits none of their core values.

But your point is taken.

I don't think I can respect the office when the man in office doesn't respect the office.

The man uses his position to throw tantrums over the Internet and spreads lies and rumors on the daily. That's not presidential behavior, and there should be no expectation of respect because of it.

Respect is earned, not inherent.


He's simply not worthy of respect and is an embarrassment to the office that he holds.

I would never shake his hand and I certainly wouldn't allow him to speak at a function that I was in charge of. It was utterly predictable that he would rant and rave. Who's surprised by this?
