POTUS 45.13 - CNN is still Fake News

Free markets mean when businesses can't find people to fill their open positions, they offer enticements to make those positions more attractive, such as higher wages.

But we can't have that, so much better to let them brig in more foreign workers who will work for minimum wage.

I know people that own a couple motels here in Bar Harbor. They couldn't get their usual Jamaican workers. They have a skeleton crew and have advertised statewide for over minimum wage plus end of summer bonus (think it works out to $15 an hour) plus free housing. They had multiple locals not bother to show up for scheduled interviews.

Not sure they could get anyone but H2-Bs to agree to come to Bar Harbor for 4 months and clean motel rooms. It's ****ty work and when it's done you need to pack up and move somewhere else. Not many want to do that. Once upon a time Bar Harbor inns could get by on lobstermans wives for seasonal housekeepers (they didn't need year round work). Not anymore.

That last part is also a product of a free market. If you can't find local people willing to do the job at the price you're paying, you broaden your search pool until you find others who will. Now, the question of whether or not they're as qualified as those locals not willing to do the job, but it's always been a market reality. Until someone legislated that it wasn't.

Didn't Maine just recently pass some laws about work requirements for welfare? How about looking in that direction?

One thing that would definitely help is eliminating (or reducing) all the red tape associated with employment. The paperwork involved is insane.

Other than getting rid of drug screens what exactly should they be doing to "eliminate red tape"?

If $15 an hour doesn't work perhaps they should try $20 or $25 an hour. Not to be mean, but there is no God given right to cheap labor.

The Republicans own every inch of this Keystone Kop show we are watching week after week. That party used to mean something other than ignorance and fear. How did they decide to turn over the keys to the likes of Scaife, Ailes, Murdoch, Atwater, Rove, and Limbaugh?

Bannon is two rungs lower yet. ***?

Speaking of Keystone Cop shows.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/17/...deal-recertify.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur

WASHINGTON — President Trump agreed on Monday to certify again that Iran is complying with an international nuclear agreement that he has strongly criticized, but only after hours of arguing with his top national security advisers, briefly upending a planned announcement as a legal deadline loomed.

This was the worst deal in history. Remember? Where are all the good deals? Where the **** is all the winning?

Guess they need to offer more then. ****ty work should pay more, just because it'as ****ty. Who wants to do that unless they're getting something out of it?

Or you could just hire illegals and poor third world people to do it, for cheap. They know ****ty from where they come from. Cleaning motel rooms ain't it.

Read an article a while ago about some fancy luxury hotel, I think in the UP who were having the same issue. Rooms there went for something like $220/night. Say if they only had 35 rooms filled, they're still pulling in almost $8000 a night. And the owner said he couldn't afford to pay more for help. 15 housekeeping staff at $15/hr for say, six hours a day is still only $1350 a day. And I doubt if they need 15 people.

I agree for the most part, they probably do need to raise pay if they can't get visa workers. I still think its hard to find enough people locally for all of the seasonal businesses in Maine or enough that want to relocate for 4 months. You really need someone that moves around following seasonal work, and that takes a special kind of worker. I'm not sure they could charge any more for their rooms, I'd classify most of their properties as 'budget' accommodations. I have a feeling if they had to pay $20-$25 an hour for housekeepers, they would shut down their oldest motel, which they don't get much per night, and hope they can sell it to someone that wants to tear it down and redevelop the property. The local labor market can't really support a sub $50 motel room -- its just too cheap (and the place is too much of a dump to charge more, but that's their problem).

"Dems in crisis" is like "LOLMets." Whether it's true or not the media knows it always has an easy laugh line there.

I did read a great Comment a few days ago.

DNC: "I wish we could find out what the voters want."

Voters: "Single payer would be great."

DNC: "I guess we'll never know."

The Dems should be mum on any candidates or platforms until after the midterms AT EARLIEST. Let the Republicans dominate the cycle and continue to crash.

I think they should put a stalking horse out there to attract all the GOP derp, keep the powder dry on the real contenders until fairly late. The Republicans (let alone Dump) have no self discipline. Let them waste their energy and money.
