Free markets mean when businesses can't find people to fill their open positions, they offer enticements to make those positions more attractive, such as higher wages.
But we can't have that, so much better to let them brig in more foreign workers who will work for minimum wage.
I know people that own a couple motels here in Bar Harbor. They couldn't get their usual Jamaican workers. They have a skeleton crew and have advertised statewide for over minimum wage plus end of summer bonus (think it works out to $15 an hour) plus free housing. They had multiple locals not bother to show up for scheduled interviews.
Not sure they could get anyone but H2-Bs to agree to come to Bar Harbor for 4 months and clean motel rooms. It's ****ty work and when it's done you need to pack up and move somewhere else. Not many want to do that. Once upon a time Bar Harbor inns could get by on lobstermans wives for seasonal housekeepers (they didn't need year round work). Not anymore.
