Everybody is mad when their funding gets cut. And of course it is indicative of our country's priorities when we spend trillions on the military and zero on culture. But it's for the best in the long run. Art needs to be free of the state, and a way to ensure that is no state funding.
This is something which the Founders would have strongly disagreed with, BTW. As Enlightenment scholars and intellectuals, they understood the importance of culture and believed strongly in the responsibility of a nation to support its artists. In their hatred of elites and intellectuals in general the right is the opposite of the Founders.
Funny thing is, having a number of musical friends (many of which, as you might expect, are anti-Trump), you should see how PO'd they are about this one. It's definitely time for those artistic to step up on their own, and may one of the most cutthroat industries find the fittest to survive.
