WASHINGTON — Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, on Wednesday defended President Trump’s firing of the director of the F.B.I., James B. Comey, resisting Democratic calls to challenge the president and support a broader inquiry of Russian interference in the election.

“Today we’ll no doubt hear calls for a new investigation,” Mr. McConnell said on the Senate floor, “which can only serve to impede the current work being done.”

With the exception of Senator John McCain of Arizona, most Republicans have resisted embracing the installation of an independent investigator or commission.

There's nothing wrong with writing something satirical. Just don't have a double standard over it, or decide groups have to be one or the other, but not both.

Hopefully the fact an independent investigation is needed and the fact that the Republicans are going to prevent that from happening will be there undoing. I seriously doubt it, but maybe.

And here's why I doubt it and what backs up what I posted earlier.

McConnell said Democrats were "complaining" about Comey's removal after having alleged during the campaign that Comey had taken unfair actions against their party's presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton.
The Kentucky Republican said what the Senate had now was "our Democratic colleagues complaining about the removal of an FBI director whom they themselves repeatedly and sharply criticized."

Comey, the former F.B.I. director, asked the Justice Department for a significant increase in money and personnel for the bureau’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the presidential election, according to three officials with knowledge of his request.

Mr. Comey asked for the resources during a meeting last week with Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who wrote the Justice Department’s memo that was used to justify the firing of the F.B.I. director this week.

Mr. Comey then briefed members of Congress on the meeting in recent days.

What will it take for elected Republicans to finally place country over party loyalty?

Impeach and you get your dream - Pence and all branches. What's the holdup?


I'm certainly not surprised - haven't been for over a decade.

Just becomes more unfathomable by the day though.


There'd be whackadoos shooting at a Dem if roles were reversed.

The problem may be Trump thinks Comey is too "ept." Trump may have thought that based on Comey's part in getting him elected he had a partisan friend who would bury the investigation, but it has seemed more and more that Comey was putting his finger on the scale for the GOP, not Trump.

As the investigation proceeds there will come a day when enough has been exposed that the GOP and Trump are in a Prisoners' Dilemma. Trump just figured out that if that ever happens Comey will side with the GOP rather than him.

This is a fascinating time to be politically aware.

Someone should ask them why are they giving credit to the Democrats for this move.

I'm sure the reply is that they are blaming Democrats, but then the follow up question- "how did Democrats force don to do something he didn't want to do, then?"

There's a great line of logic that will easily play out. If there was a journalist brave enough to do it.
