Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

Finally I was able to attend a Bears game tonight. First and foremost, I truly miss being on the mic but life sometimes gets in the way of fun. Nevertheless, they have a pretty good kid doing it now. Maxcy was packed and I was afraid that I might lose my seat if I went to the bathrooom. Potsdam played with great energy and Coach Bernard's recruiting efforts are starting to pay dividends. Jon Hall is so darn steady and you can see the confidence the kids have playing in front of him.
That being said, I must say I have zero and I mean ZERO respect for Buff St. after witnessing one of their players who decided to skate behind Hall and trip him with his stick. Hall went down and laid there forever or so it seemed. I can't believe the style of hockey they play, maybe in the 70's their kind of play would have been acceptable but today no way. They are dirty, hack and whack, trip, hands to the face, trip goalies...we like a good clean brand of hockey now. I just find it revolting that a program has to play like that.

You're not the only one! It starts with their coach....

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

Seriously the only thing missing from their lineup are the Hanson Brothers....no accountability whatsoever. And you're right it starts from the top. The worst part is I have had several very nice conversations with Nick, he is a very approachable guy but his players....well I can't use swear words on here but they are something that rhymes with basspoles.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

He lives off the legacy of his father and has learned to play that card extremely well. Reality is he is a two-faced phony SOB that will do ANYTHING to try to win.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

I'll add to this an observation from the Plattsburgh game the night before:

I didn't catch the numbers of the players involved, but on Plattsburgh player lost his glove during a play but continued to participate. A Buff State player observed this and, with the play a bit away from them, took a swipe at that hand with his stick. Disgusting... Targeting an unprotected part of a player's body with an unnecessary slash (admittedly, he didn't put a lot of force into it, but that's besides the point...)

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

So its a week off from the rigors of the SUNYAC, however it doesn't get easier. Our Route 11 rivals invade Maxcy Hall on Military Appreciation night this Friday, the Kangaroos. I had an opportunity to speak with Coach Bernard and he informed me the Bears will be wearing camo jerserys for this event. Bears in camo? Irony!

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

I'm looking for a Potsdam sweep this weekend. Fredonia seems to be struggling early and Buff State doesn't have Carr anymore and gave up 9 goals against at home vs Morrisville last weekend. Could be a long season for the Blue Devils and Bengals.

I was pretty close on this. Only missed by one bristle of the broom to those pesky Blue Devils. The next night was right on the money. The Bengals need to buy a new carr.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

I don't have enough stuff in my place to break tonight after our backsides kicked by Cortland, which now makes it back to back home losses to Cortland. Something has to give here, either we are on our way up or destined to be cellar dwellers. Home points are huge and to come out lay an absolute egg against Cortland has me beyond angry. The Lakers bring their show tomorrow night....sh%t or get off the pot Bears!

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

Just reflecting on the post about the Buffalo player taking a swipe at a Platty player who lost his glove. I have to tell you that I have been around long enough to remember many years ago when it took three majors to get ejected from a game. As we all know fighting was a total part of the college game at that time. When Oswego played their first game in Buffalo this year the boys was OZ were getting the ---- kicked out of them. They finally came out of the either being down by a three goal deficit. They did respond by eventually winning the game, but at what price. Our boys were really banged up after that game. If it wasn't for the second ref that ejected two buffalo players in the second Oswego would have lost that game. The head ref let the game get out of hand in the first.
Buffal's coach has been there for 27 years. He knows exactly what they are doing on the ice. Last weekend in Wisconson buffalo got waxed by St Norbert, but again exacted a price from SNC. there coach Coughlin stated after the two games that he had several players banged up. I guess my point is, the zebra's need to wake up and punish that kind of play, goon mentality play. From what I have seen this year all the SUNAC teams are capable of beating any team on any given night.. If that is the way Buffalo or any other Hockey has to play, they need to remember that those days are gone.

That's the difference between "us" and "them". Oswego (for the most part) have always been a physical team, but clean. Even last night against Cortland when they were getting embarrassed they kept is "clean". If that was Buff State, forget it. There almost comes a time against Buff State you want to stop scoring goals because you fear an illegal hit. I've had my share of "princess tough guys" over the years, sadly you can always find one on Buff State on a yearly basis. I've never been so disgusted when a Plattsburgh player was targeted, the Buff State player goes to the box and Carriere was laughing on the bench chuckling and then had the nerve to ask for an embellishment penalty.

Cortland has been playing better lately. Like wise I would like to see Potsdam get back to its former glory. Saw those banners hanging the other night and its been awhile.

Fighting has NEVER been part of the college game. At least, never acceptable. And I've been following college hockey since the NYC PBS station used to cover games back in the mid-70s. (And that included a massive brawl between Yale and I can't remember who, which extended down the hallway into the locker room area. But, that doesn't mean it was ever acceptable in the college game.)

One fighting major has ALWAYS been an automatic ejection in college hockey at least since the 70s, and I would bet earlier than that.

Buffal's coach has been there for 27 years.

What?! Nick Carriere hasn't even been an adult for 27 years.

If that is the way Buffalo or any other Hockey has to play, they need to remember that those days are gone.

Again, those days were always gone. In fact, some will argue it was cleaner before the days of the facemask.

Like Remy said, there is a big difference between tough and goon.

I haven't seen Buffalo State play this year, so I'm not making any judgement on the Bengals.

And in conclusion, this is a thread about POTSDAM. So I don't even know how the heck this conversation got back to Buffalo State over a supposed incident weeks ago.

Poor Saints17 needs to have all sharp objects kept away from him, and all we can keep worrying about is Buffalo State?

Yes I got booted out of a Platty game in Romney,I think 85' for punching/facewashing a Platty player in the face/head with my glove on during a goalmouth scramble/doonibrook:Dnnn,had to sit th next night as well...fighting was not a part of the game, but clean hard hitting was.

If no one is talking about Potsdam then no one realizes how bad they've been playing. Consider it a "positive distraction" theory.....

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

SUNYAC picks athletes of the week for the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Jon Hall (JR)
Potsdam, Goalie (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit)
Jon Hall had a strong opening weekend in a 1-1 start to the 2014-15 season against two ranked opponents. He made 35 saves in 4-2 loss to No. 9 Plattsburgh on Friday. He followed it up with one of the finest performances of his career, a career-high 53 saves (.930 save percentage) in a 5-4 upset of No. 15 Hobart on Saturday night. The victory ended Potsdam's eight-game (0-7-1) winless streak against the Statesmen. His 88 saves for the weekend were 20 more than any other SUNYAC goalie and give him a .917 save percentage for the young season.

ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK for the week of Nov. 10-16 - Jon Hall (JR)
Potsdam, Goalie (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit)
Hall posted a sub-3.00 goals-against-average and a .931 save percentage in a 1-0-1 conference weekend for the Bears. He stopped 44 shots in a 4-4 draw with Fredonia on Friday night. Hall then made 37 more saves to help Potsdam down Buffalo State for the first time in two seasons.

I finally noticed that Clarkson beat St. Lawrence over the weekend. So now, Saints17 is really pulling his hair out.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

Actually....I am ok with Clarkson beating SLU. It is what is, I've been thru alot of those losses. However, I am frustrated with my Bears sitting 2nd from the bottom in the SUNYAC. Alot of road games in the 2nd semester means a tough hill to climb. It is true that there are no longer any "gimmies" in the league now versus 10, 15 years ago. I wasn't overly optimistic for this season but I thought we would at least be middle of the pack heading into break.
Not sure what the problem is....

Lots of hockey to be played and having been to Potsdam this year, I think you have a pretty darn good goal tender there. Who knows?

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

Mr Jaslow, read what I said. Fighting was a part of college Hockey, I did not say it was acceptable. Romney fieldhouse played its first hockey game in 1964. I was there and did not miss a game for years. Although good clean hard hitting was the norm, there was plenty of fighting. If you interpreted that I believe fighting is something that is good for college Hockey you are wrong.
All of this started with the conversation about the goon play of Buffalo State. There is no room for a player, a team or a coach that deliberately goes out on the ice to hurt someone

Re: Potsdam Bears 2014-2015...playoffs? You want to talk about playoffs?

On another note. My friends and family and I traveled to the great North this weekend to watch oz . We were impressed with the fans at the Potsdam game. They treated us with respect. Although the Bears were getting waxed they never left the rink until the game was over. Great respect for their team.

I got booted out of Bucklands for fighting...or was it Broadwells?
