Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

Re: Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

Huge task this weekend for the Bears. First up, a dangerous Cortland squad led by a pretty darn good Coach. Then we welcome Oswego, with any luck Oswego will roll into Potsdam exhausted from chasing a hungry bunch of birds the night before. With this Bears team the hopes are high, at least for this diehard.

Just to let the Potsdam Bears Hockey Kingdom know the Bearcast is back up and running on potsdambears.com and 99hits.com

We will be covering the Cortland/Oswego weekend on 99hits

6:40 Pre-Game, 7pm Face-Off with Chris Engel and John Horan

Re: Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

Not a bad weekend for the Bears, a win against Cortland and a tough loss against the #2 team in the Nation. I am not one who complains about officiating nor blames them for a loss, but after tonight I will. Oswego's 2nd goal was the result of a tackle by a Laker who prevented the P'dam winger from covering the point on that shot. Ok, fine, guess you have to take the good with the bad sometimes. Then in the 2nd period, an Oswego player delivers an elbow/shoulder to the head of a P'dam dman, who has to leave the game as a result of a possible concussion. Yet again NO CALL. Then Chris Muise decides he is going to deliberatley kick a Potsdam player and use his skate as a weapon. The result? Both players receive 2 mins for roughing. Sad display by the officiating crew. Was the officiating the deciding factor in the outcome of this contest? Maybe...
I am proud of the Bears who gave Oswego all they could handle for this contest. I just wish the officiating had been a bit more neutral.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

We were lucky enough to witness the officiating "talent" of Will O'Malley for both nights. My favorite call from this past weekend? A Cortland and Potsdam player were each given 5 minutes for "facemasking". WTH?

If they were tangled up and grabing each others facemask its a 5 min penalty....

Re: Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

I understand the call, I just hadn't heard the term "facemasking" as a call. It is something new that the added to the rulebook. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Facemasking is what kids do on Halloween.

It's been in the rule book for a few years now.

Cope, Ellis and Finnerty Collect SUNYAC Athlete of the Week honors

SUNY Potsdam freshman hockey players Trevor Cope and Dylan Ellis have earned recognition by the State University of New York Athletic Conference for the week ending Dec. 4. For the second time in three weeks, Cope has been named the conference’s Rookie of the Week, while Ellis garnered his first SUNYAC Goalie of the Week award. In addition, Brockport's Ian Finnerty was named the SUNYAC Player of the Week.

Cope recorded two assists in the Bears’ 5-1 victory over Cortland on Friday. On Saturday night, the forward scored two goals in Potsdam’s 6-4 loss to second-ranked Oswego. Cope is the Bears’ second-leading scorer this season with five goals and nine assists for 14 points. He has totaled two or more points in each of the last four games and his average of 1.56 points-per-game continues to lead all conference freshmen.

Ellis stopped 35 of 36 shots he faced to earn his fourth victory of the season against the Red Dragons. The goaltender then stopped 47 of 52 shots against the Lakers. On the season, Ellis is 4-4 with a save percentage of .903 and a goals against average of 3.63.

Finnerty tallied four points in Brockport’s 7-6 win over Morrisville Saturday night in the 4th Annual Saves for a Cure game. Finnerty opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles at 6:59 of the first. Morrisville took the lead twice in the third period, but Finnerty responded each time, keeping the game tied and completing the hat trick. The senior forward also assisted on Brockport’s sixth goal at 8:35 of the final period.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

Thanks Norm for your addition. Big game on the road tomorrow night at Utica. I cannot imagine a better way to end the first semester than to win at Utica. Lets make some noise for the SUNYAC conference boys!

Re: Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

Well the Bears concluded the 1st semester portion of their schedule with a tough loss to Utica. I have extremely impressed the quality of the Bears team this season. Every game (with the exception of 1) this season, they have been in it. I am looking forward to the 2nd half of the season, which will begin at the Middlebury tourney. With Coach Bernard's record with tournaments in Vermont, don't be surprised if the Bears come away with a victory or two. Speaking of Coach Bernard, perhaps a little early but SUNYAC Coach of the Year has to be a possibility.

Good to see the bears playing tuff hockey not sure what happened with the Hosmer kid but they could use his scoring he has 11g,and 18pts in 12 games.....good luck the rest of the way just dont spoil senior night in Oz :D

Re: Potsdam Bears 2011-2012 season....

The problem is that his selfish attitude and uncoachable nature overshadow his ability. I think that not only do the Bears not need Hosmer but they have made bigger steps without him than they ever did when he was on the team. Many of those steps just don't show up on the scoresheet.
