Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

This is real cool as back in 78 the team completed in the SUNY, ECAC 2 and the NYCHA and had separate records in each.

The part about the ECAC-2 standings also shows something interesting: the smoke-filled room isn't a recent phenomenon. If Plattsburgh wins, they're the 1-seed, but if they lose they drop below a team with a worse record because of politics?

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Tommey looks fast,to bad he is a senior this yr...seems like most goals were of the rebound kind,

Emery wanted a tougher team this year and I think he is getting it. They are really working on getting in front of the net and getting those garbage goals. Still have some snipers for sure, but they are working at crashing to the net more then the pretty tic tac toe. Will it work? Time will tell. One thing I'm looking forward to is how they do on a bigger ice sheet. Primelink will be fun when they can open it up. PP is still the biggest concern. Can't get a good read on goaltending yet. Roli played well in Brockport, but its Brockport. Finney had some big rebounds in Geneseo and looked to be fighting the puck, but then again that's Geneseo. Not a fan of 2 goaltenders, but its a good problem to have I guess....

I think like dzone coverage,a problem that Oz had the other night, goalies controling rebounds will come as the season goes on,some things like huslte and crashing the net dont seem to take that long to develop in the beginning of the season..........as for the PP,who knows, sometimes they roll and other times zippo. mystery....Like I said at the end of the Final 4 last yr,Oswego troubles with the pp the last 2/3/4/5 yrs has been a concern,as they have been out special teamed in the FF for the past 5 yrs,and I highly doubt it is because they didnt work on it,sometimes its just the way the bounces go.

Plattsburgh State’s Ayrton Valente carries the puck around the net as Buffalo’s Jason Zaleski gives chase during Friday’s SUNYAC men’s hockey game at the Ronald B. Stafford Arena in Plattsburgh.
PLATTSBURGH — Heading into Friday’s game, Plattsburgh State had succeeded on just 5.9 percent of its power plays.
The Cardinals boosted that number and their win total in their first game of the season at Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh scored two power-play goals in a 6-1 win over Buffalo State in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey. Plattsburgh hosts Fredonia tonight.
The Cardinals (4-0, 4-0 SUNYAC) had just one power-play marker in their first three games, and coach Bob Emery said assistant Mike Coppola has been doing extra work with the special-teams players.
“We’ve really been executing it during the week,” defenseman Rich Botting said. “We’ve just been stressing it. Because the power play and special teams are a big factor in these games. So we’ve just been putting in time, I think, and it’s finally clicking.”
Botting tallied one of the power-play goals and earned two assists.
Connor Gorman put the Cardinals ahead in the middle of the first period by firing a shot from the left circle that pinballed off the goaltender’s pad and into the net. Zach Popp scored from down low at 9:53 to make it 2-0.
Not long after, Buffalo State goalie Mike DeLaVergne went down in obvious pain. He had to be helped off the ice and was replaced by Ian Sylves.
“I gotta give Buff State a lot of credit. They came out with a lot of jam (in the) first period and tried to take us out of our game,” Emery said. “I just tried to get our guys to keep our composure, get pucks in deep and keep our legs moving.
“I thought eventually we would wear them down. And I think the first goal kinda broke their back.”

Plattsburgh needed just 39 second in the second period to double its lead. Michael Radisa knocked a rebound past Sylves’ right pad 27 seconds in, and Michael Cassidy followed with a rebound goal of his own.
Botting and Brandon O’Quinn also scored for the Cardinals in the second, while Jake Rosen put the Bengals (1-2-2, 1-2-2) on the board.
Junior goalie Brady Rouleau made his second straight start for Plattsburgh and stopped 21 shots. Emery said the Cardinals played well in front of him.
“I thought we did a good job letting Brady see the puck all night,” he said. “Buff State’s the type of team that tries to get a lot of shots off the rush, and I thought we did a good job of making sure Brady saw them all and then making sure we cleared away rebounds.”
Plattsburgh’s Kyle Hall, Mark Constantine and Luke Baleshta all picked up two assists.
Sylves, a freshman who had not played before Friday, stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced in Buffalo State’s net.
While Emery said the Cardinals “did a lot of things well” Friday, he added that he would like to see them take better care of the puck in the defensive zone, especially on the penalty kill, today.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

I recall a third period comeback vs. RIT at the Ronny B. I have those goal calls by Ducky archived somewhere. I think Derrick Shaw got the eventual game winner short handed for the 5-4 win. Cards trailed 4-1 entering the third.

I didn't see that particular game, but a very similar set up in January 2013 vs. Williams was fun to watch. 5-4 OT Cards after trailing 4-1 starting the 3rd.

Penn State is leading UMass-Lowell 4-0 in the third period right now. Why do we care here? One of the referees is Jeff Bunyon....

Cardinals sweep weekend with win over Fredonia
Plattsburgh State's Kyle Hall tangles with Fredonia's Daniel Martensson during Saturday's SUNYAC men's hockey game at the Ronald B Stafford Arena in Plattsburgh.
PLATTSBURGH — For the second straight game, the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.
The Cardinals weren’t quite as happy with their overall play Saturday as they were Friday, but they still held off Fredonia 4-1 in a SUNY Athletic Conference game at Stafford Ice Arena.
“I thought our goalie played well and our defense played well,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “The defense did a great job on the D-zone coverage (Saturday) and a great job breaking pucks out. I think our forwards played with a lack of emotion in a big, big way.
After scoring twice in the first 11 minutes of the game, Plattsburgh (5-0-0, 5-0-0 SUNYAC) didn’t have a lot of jump in the second period. The Blue Devils had more chances in that period than in the first, and the shots were even at 13.
Emery took a timeout in midway through to talk to his team.
“I tried to call a timeout to spark our guys up,” he said. “I just said, ‘Guys let’s have a little bit more fun here and play with a little more heart. They didn’t really respond.”

They did increase their lead, though. Mark Constantine's second effort out front resulted in a 3-0 cushion late in the period.
Less than three minutes into the third, Fredonia's Stephen Castriota skated in on the right side and put a shot over Spencer Finney's right shoulder, off the far post and in for a short-handed goal.
The Blue Devils (1-2-3, 1-2-3) didn’t have any high-quality scoring chances for most of the rest of the third period. But they went on the power play with 3:44 to play and pulled their goalie when it expired, giving them a man advantage for more than three minutes.
“It’s a little nerve-racking any time you get a penalty that late in the game,” forward Kevin Emmerling said. “And we were fortunate enough to kill it off, and Finney did a hell of a job in net.”
Emmerling got Plattsburgh’s offense going at 3:37 of the first period with a goal that was assisted by Ayrton Valente. Josh Koerner, seeing his first action of the season, made it 2-0 at 11:03.
“We always talk about getting off to a good start because every team we play is tough,” Emmerling said. “So getting a good start is really key. And we were fortunate enough to do that the last couple games, and hopefully we can keep it going.”
Freshman Matt Quilty earned an assist on Koerner’s goal and now leads the team with six points.
Plattsburgh continued its pattern of alternating goalies each game. After Brady Rouleau played Friday against Buffalo State, Finney made 30 saves Saturday. The junior is 3-0 on the season, while sophomore Rouleau is 2-0.
When asked if he learned anything more about his goaltenders this weekend, Emery said he learned that the two-goalie system is working.
“We’re going to split them next weekend,” Emery said.
Chris Eiserman stopped 36 shots in the Fredonia net.

Plattsburgh State 4, Fredonia 1
Fredonia 0 0 1 — 1
Plattsburgh 2 1 1 — 4
First period- 1, PSU, Emmerling (Valente), 3:37. 2, PSU, Koerner (Gorman, Quilty), 11:03. Penalties: Fred, Wyina (hooking), 13:17. PSU, Valente (interference), 18:51.
Second period- 3, PSU, Constantine, 18:29. Penalties: Fred, Martensson (interference), 13:20.
Third period- 4, Fred, Castriota (Wynia, Gerhardson), 2:27(sh). 5, PSU, Toomey (O’Quinn), 19:22. Penalties- Fredonia, bench (too many players), 0:49. Fred, Doust (tripping), 4:20. PSU, Cassidy (roughing), 16:16.

Fredonia 10 13 8 — 31

That is awesome. I played against Plattsburgh a couple times in baseball and always respected the program for its class. I love seeing teams, especially DIII teams, embrace the community like that.
