Emery: "I don't know about triple overtime. In the NCAA tournament a few years back, we played Middlebury, and it was like midnight before we got out of here. Middlebury had won five national championships in a row, and we were the first to knock them off."

SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY PLAYER/ROOKIE – Plattsburgh
Mark Constantine (Haddonfield, NJ), forward
Mark Constantine has been named the SUNYAC Player and Rookie of the week after playing a crucial role in Plattsburgh's 4-3 win in triple overtime Saturday, finishing the night with three points. The Cardinal freshman netted the game-winner of 11:07 of the third overtime to secure Plattsburgh a spot in the SUNYAC finals and end the second-longest game in Division III hockey history. Constantine also assisted on the first Plattsburgh goal, a power-play goal at 3:23 of the second period and on the second goal of the night later that same period.

Plattsburgh Forward Michael Cassidy has played in 20 games this season with out taking ANY penalities. :eek: :cool:

Norwich's Travis Janke played in all 30 games last year without a penalty and then didn't get whistled for his first until the Morrisville game this year...I believe it was 38 or 39 games without a penalty. Very impressive for a guy that is on the ice A LOT.

That is impressive, unfortunately, I do not see an NCAA Record for longest penality free streak, though IMO, that SHOULD be a highly respected achivement.

Yipes, that's a national champ and two runners-up with at least 24 PIM/G.

e: For comparison, the most I can find among champs over the past decade is 18.1, by St. Norbert '08 and Neumann '09.

Just curious could some fan tell me the probable seeding of Plattsturgh in the NCAA tournament in the event they defeat Oswego; and also if the lose to Oswego. Got to believe that Plattsburgh would be the 4th seed in any event and host a quarterfinal game. Agree??

I don't see Plattsburgh jumping from fourth unless they win and Amherst loses. I don't see Plattsburgh jumping Norwich or Oswego.

Depending on the split and who makes the tournament, Plattsburgh could go anywhere from hosting a play-in game to being on the road for a quarterfinal at Amherst or Norwich.

SUNYAC final: Plattsburgh State vs. Oswego
Plattsburgh State takes on archrival Lakers tonight in conference championship game {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Mar. 3, 2012}

Two weeks ago, Oswego shut out Plattsburgh State to clinch the regular-season title.

Tonight, the same teams will play on the same ice surface for an even bigger prize — the SUNY Athletic Conference championship.

Plattsburgh senior Matt MacLeod said the Cardinals were hoping they'd get another chance at the Lakers.

"It's one of the biggest rivalries in hockey," he said. "They've gotten us pretty good the last six or seven meetings. So no better feeling than beating them on home ice in the SUNYAC championship."

The second-seeded Cardinals (18-4-4) will go back to Campus Center Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup with the top-seeded Lakers (22-2-2). The winner will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, which starts next week. The loser will have to wait until Sunday, when the field will be announced, for a possible at-large bid.

The archrivals will meet in the championship game for the 12th time. Plattsburgh is 9-2 in those games, although Oswego won the most recent contest in 2010.

The Lakers, ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, beat Fredonia, 8-3, in the semifinals last week. That was the Lakers' 12th consecutive win; they haven't lost since a Dec. 31 setback against Neumann.

John Whitelaw leads Oswego's powerful offense with 39 points, including 18 goals. Paul Rodrigues has 35 points, and Luke Moodie has 32. Andrew Hare ranks third among Division III goaltenders with a 1.71 GAA and boasts a .931 save percentage.

Oswego beat the Cardinals, 3-0, Feb. 17, and the teams tied, 2-2, Dec. 2 in Plattsburgh. With those games, the Lakers pushed its unbeaten streak against Plattsburgh to 6-0-1.

The Cardinals made the final by outlasting Buffalo State, 4-3, in a triple-overtime marathon last Saturday. That game followed an all-too familiar pattern for the Cardinals — it was the fourth time this season they blew a two-goal lead in the third period. They've also given up a one-goal advantage twice.

"We've been focusing all week on if you do have leads in the third period not to panic," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "That's been our biggest problem is our panic, playing not to lose. We gotta play with confidence and play with swag throughout 60 minutes."

The Cardinals haven't lost any of those games that it let late leads slip away, but they know it's a dangerous habit.

"We can't be playing that way in the playoffs," MacLeod said. "It's just about focus and leadership, you know?

"(The Lakers) are a really good team, and we can't have any mental breakdowns."

Emery did say the fact that the fourth-ranked Cardinals are used to gutting out games could be beneficial. Their last six wins have each been by a one-goal margin.

"I think that can help you come playoff time, if you've had a tough year where it wasn't so easy for you," Emery said. "We've had to battle for everything we've had this year. And I think that can help you when you get late in the year where it is a battle because you're playing against the top teams."

Cardinals defeat Oswego for SUNYAC title PSU defeats archrival Oswego 3-2 to win second straight, 21st overall SUNYAC title {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Mar. 4, 2012}

Plattsburgh State took a lead in the third period Saturday ... and held onto it.

The Cardinals have had a penchant for letting late leads disappear this season, but in the SUNY Athletic Conference championship game at the Campus Center Ice Rink, they closed out Oswego, 3-2. They claimed their second straight conference title and 21st overall.

"I think it's important once you do get the lead just to really keep on the pressure," Plattsburgh defenseman Paul Puglisi said. "If you kinda lay off and sit back, that gives the other team a chance; it gives them momentum.

"So I feel like we kept working, kept at it, kept cycling, kept on them and kept the pressure on."

Plattsburgh State (19-4-4) earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Oswego (22-3-2) will most likely receive one of the three at-large bids when the 11-team field is announced tonight.

Nick Jensen and Mike Grace scored in the third period, and Grace was named the tournament MVP. Mathieu Cadieux made 15 saves for the second-seeded Cardinals.

Plattsburgh, which was shut out 3-0 in the same rink two weeks ago, ended Oswego's seven-game unbeaten streak in the rivalry.

"Plattsburgh was opportunistic," Oswego coach Ed Gosek said. "I thought that was the difference between the last time we played them and this time. Last time the breaks, those chances went our way. And (Saturday) they made their breaks."

Opportunistic has been a favorite word of Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery — to describe what the Cardinals haven't been. But in Saturday's third period, they made plays around Oswego's net as well as big plays in the defensive zone.

Grace poked in a loose puck almost five minutes into the period to put the Cardinals in front, 2-1, and notch his first goal of the season. Jensen scored from the slot at 8:26, with an assist from Kyle Kudroch, but the two-goal lead was short-lived.

Cadieux got caught out of his net, and Kyle Badham's shot from the left side made it 3-2 seven seconds later.

The Cardinals were scrambling in their own end right after that goal.

"I feel like we did realize it was happening and we got everybody together on the bench and told them to calm down, relax," Puglisi said.

The Cardinals took a penalty with 4:03 left, and Puglisi said they felt that would probably be "the deciding point" in the game. They killed it off.

Oswego pulled goaltender Andrew Hare at the very end, but Plattsburgh made sure the puck stayed out of its net.

The Cardinals held the top-seeded Lakers to 17 shots, and Gosek said they had to work for their chances.

"I thought we played a good, smart game," Emery said. "We did a pretty good job slowing them down on the attack. They're a pretty good team on the rush."

The Lakers used a 5-on-3 in the middle of the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Jon Whitelaw blasted a shot from the left circle that hit the crossbar and rattled between it and Cadieux's shoulder. Jared Docking banged in the puck to tie the game 1:11 before intermission.

Hare totaled 24 saves.

Jensen, who had two points, and Cadieux both made the All-Tournament team.

Plattsburgh is now 10-2 when facing Oswego in SUNYAC title games.

"They're a great team, and they battled hard," Puglisi said. "But to win the SUNYAC, it's a great feeling."

A coworker of mine his daughter will be transfering into Oswego next year from a 2 year college where she is the head of something in their broadcadting dept. He asked if I knew anything about Oswegos crew. I simply said it is hands down the most professional, broadcasting, reporting and production, of any DIII college. Im not as framiliar with DI, but Id love to see someone rival it. I told him to watch the game last night and when I woke up this morning, all I had in my inbox was "WOW!!!"
