Plattsburgh State Hockey 2011-12 - The work and progress continue..

"When his career is over, I am sure he's going to be mentioned in the same breath as (Rick Strack, Nick Sundberg, and Bryan Hince). But I measure success by championships. We have a lot of hockey to play ahead of us, and hopefully he can lead us to some championships." - Bob Emery on goaltender Mathieu Cadieux and his future as a member of the Cardinals.

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference announced today that Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery has been named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the 2011-12 men’s hockey season.

The honor, which is voted on by the conference coaches, is the sixth of Emery’s career. In his 23rd season behind the Cardinal bench, he has guided a young Plattsburgh team to a current 17-4-4 overall record and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament with a league mark of 12-3-1.

Earlier this month, Emery became the 20th coach in NCAA history to attain 500 wins and just the fifth to do it exclusively at the Division III level. Emery’s career .743 winning percentage in the fourth-highest in NCAA history across all divisions.
The Cardinals are making their 22nd appearance in the SUNYAC tournament under Emery, including 21 consecutive trips. Plattsburgh is the second seed for the sixth time in tournament history and is appearing in its 25th tournament overall.

Emery and the Cardinals begin postseason play on Saturday as Plattsburgh plays host to third-seeded Buffalo State in the SUNYAC semifinals. All fans are encouraged to wear red to show support for the Cardinal men’s hockey team. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Bengals seeking first title-game berth {Extract via the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 25, 2012}

Buffalo State beat Potsdam, 4-3, on Wednesday to advance to the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey semifinals for the first time in the program’s history. Plattsburgh State, on the other hand, has won 13 championships, including the 2010-11 title.

The third-seeded Bengals reached Saturday’s semifinal at Stafford Ice Arena by scoring two goals in the last half of the Wednesday’s third period, including Taylor McGraw’s winner with 3:23 left.

Buffalo State has won three of its last four games, with the only loss in that stretch coming at Oswego.

Trevor McKinney leads the team with 16 goals and 30 points. Justin Knee is next with 25 points, and Drew Klin is right behind him with 24. Sophomore Kevin Carr has a 3.01 GAA and a .906 save percentage. He was named Second-Team All-SUNYAC this week.

Buffalo State is one of three conference teams that beat Plattsburgh in the regular season; the Bengals prevailed 4-3 on Nov. 12. The Cardinals held them scoreless three weeks ago for a 1-0 win at Stafford, with Jake Mooney scoring in the first period.

“We learned that they’re always up to play us,” Plattsburgh freshman Mark Constantine said. “They come hard every game, so we’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game.

“And it’s not going to be an easy game for us, so we have to work hard. Just come out, play hard, bury our chances, play good defense. Just outplay them.”

The second-seeded Cardinals have lost just four games all season, but two of those were in the last two weeks. Most of their wins in the second half of the season have been hard-fought — the last five were by a one-goal margin.

Plattsburgh, which hasn’t played at home since Feb. 4, closed the regular season last Saturday with a 3-2 overtime win at Cortland. Zach Blake’s first career goal decided the game with 56 seconds left.

Watched the Oswego preview and I've apparently learned there is now a fourth way to say Oswego.

PR reporter Courtney Lewis refers to it as OZsheweegoh.

Interesting.

I've heard "oh-SWEE-go", "oh-SWAY-go", "ah-SWEE-go" (correct), "oz-WAY-go", and of course the beloved local saying... "uh-SWIGGO"

When I was in high school and we were playing any sport against them we would chant "Os-We -GO into the wild blue yonder---CRASH!!!! Oswego is no more!

You can tell how long someone has been in Oswego by how they pronounce it.

Cards win semifinal in double OT {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 26, 2012}

It took 111 minutes of hockey and 71 shots on net, but Plattsburgh State dispatched Buffalo State and earned a spot in the SUNY Athletic Conference championship game.

Mark Constantine scored top shelf 11:07 into the third overtime Saturday to give the Cardinals a 4-3 victory in a men's hockey semifinal at Stafford Ice Arena.

"That was a big-time goal-scorer's goal," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "It was a scissor pass off the wall, and he took it to their net and put it upstairs. He's one of our most skilled guys, and that was a goal-scorer's goal for sure."

No. 2 seed Plattsburgh (18-4-4) will travel to Oswego for the final next Saturday. The Lakers beat Fredonia, 8-3, in the semifinals.

Constantine, who had three points Saturday, has scored in the last two games after having gone without a goal since November.

Mathieu Cadieux made 38 saves for Plattsburgh. Kevin Carr suffered the loss despite turning away 67 shots.

Buffalo State's Mike Zannella sent the game into extra periods by scoring the equalizer with 1:27 left in the third period.

The Cardinals had a great chance to end it early in the first overtime when Jared Docking went in all alone on a breakaway. Carr denied him and also held strong during a scramble shortly after.

There were some frantic moments at both ends the rest of that period. But then the Cardinals started to take over.

They outshot Buffalo State, 14-3, in the second overtime and held the third-seeded Bengals (13-12-2) to one shot in the third extra frame.

"We knew we were outplaying them," Constantine said. "We could see that they were tired."

Finally, Constantine skated in from the left side of the net and beat Carr with assists from Kyle Kudroch and Docking.

"And thank God," Constantine said. "It was a long game there."

After two periods, Plattsburgh didn't look like it would need that much time to advance.

Jake Mooney took a pass at the right side of the net and one-timed it to put Plattsburgh ahead 3:23 into the second. Docking made it 2-0 when he corralled a rebound and flipped it into the open right side of the net.

Drew Klin put Buffalo State on the board with just under five minutes left in the period, but Patrick Jobb answered with a goal off a faceoff and the Cardinals took a 3-1 lead into the intermission.

They kept their two-goal cushion for most of the third, but then Kyle Whipple made good use of the crossbar and brought the Bengals back within one at 13:21.

Buffalo State pulled Carr with 1:33 to play and needed just five seconds to capitalize on the extra attacker. Zannella lifted a loose puck over Cadieux to knot the score.

"From a coaching standpoint, we've gotta learn from our mistakes (Saturday)," Emery said. "We've got a two-goal lead, we're playing pretty good. As we move ahead here, teams are going to get better. We can't lack poise at the end of the game and give up the lead.

"But the players did respond in overtime."

I believe they said that they would announce availability today. If it's like the semi, season ticket holders could get them tomorrow, & the general public on Wednesday. Still haven't seen the official announcement, though...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2011-12 - The work and progress continue..

I interviewed Bob Emery after Saturday night's game. Here are some interesting things he touched upon.

Me: Will fatigue be a concern going into Oswego?

Emery: "No, man. We have a week between games. This game won't affect us at all."

Me: Coach, did you feel like the game was slipping away in the last seven or eight minutes of regulation?

Emery: "I think we lacked poised. It was 3-1. We didn't do a good job playing with the lead there at all. We have to show better leadership when playing with the lead, and not panic. I thought we showed some panic when it was 3-1. That is a concern (going into Oswego). I think we've lacked poise towards the end of close games like the Williams game and this game."

Me: How do you think the defensive zone play was in the overtime periods?

Emery: "Well, I think we really took it to them in the second and third overtime. In the first overtime, we had the long change where the goalie was on the far end, and we couldn't get guys off. They got some great chances in that first overtime."

Me: As a head coach here at Plattsburgh, do you recall a bigger overtime playoff win?

Emery: "I don't know about triple overtime. In the NCAA tournament a few years back, we played Middlebury, and it was like midnight before we got out of here. Middlebury had won five national championships in a row, and we were the first to knock them off."
