Cardinals bounce back against Knights {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 12, 2012}

Plattsburgh State scored two goals in the first five minutes Saturday and then held on despite taking a flurry of penalties in the third period.

Michael Cassidy and Nick Jensen found the net as the Cardinals beat Geneseo, 2-1, in SUNY Athletic Conference men's hockey.

"I like the way we came out of the locker room. I thought we came out pretty good, had good emotion," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "And we got the two goals, but we need that killer instinct to get that third goal.

"I thought we had some great opportunities in the first and second periods. And the third just wasn't a flowing period. It was jumbled. We just couldn't get anything going."

Cassidy found the net just 57 seconds into the first period, with an assist from Preston Kaye. Jensen followed with a power-play goal at 4:38. Kyle Taylor and Jared Docking assisted.

Neither team scored in the second. Then No. 3 Plattsburgh (16-3-4, 11-2-1) was whistled for three penalties in the first 5:23 of the third. The second two gave Geneseo a 5-on-3, which the Cardinals killed.

But the Knights (12-11-1, 6-8-1) got on the board right afterward with a goal from Jonathan Redlick.

Plattsburgh had to kill two more penalties in the last three minutes. It had taken just two penalties over the first two periods.

"It was a very uncharacteristic game of a Plattsburgh team (Saturday)," Emery said. "There were a lot of penalties. I thought we played great team defense, and the penalty kill was awesome.

"A couple guys on defense and a couple of penalty-killing forwards in particular — Docking and Taylor — did a great job blocking shots."

Mathieu Cadieux made 24 saves for the win, and Geneseo goalie Cory Gershon had 21.

Plattsburgh remained three points behind first-place Oswego. The Cardinals bounced back after being upset by Brockport on Friday.

"I think we played better defensively (Saturday); we kept them to one goal," Emery said. "But we gotta find a way to score some greasy, dirty goals because we don't have that sniper."

Cards shut out by rival Oswego {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 18, 2012}

OSWEGO — Oswego showed why it ranks second in scoring offense in Division III, while Plattsburgh's difficulty finding the back of the net intensified Friday.

The Lakers scored twice in the first period and went on to blank Plattsburgh 3-0, clinching first place in the SUNY Athletic Conference. The Cardinals (16-4-4, 11-3-1), who wrap up the regular season at Cortland today, will finish second in the conference and also have a bye into the semifinals of next week's SUNYAC tournament.

Top-ranked Oswego (20-2-2, 13-0-2) became just the third team to hold Plattsburgh without a goal this season, but the Cardinals haven't exactly been filling it up. They've tallied a combined five goals in their last four games. The Lakers held a slim 28-27 advantage in shots Friday.

"I felt like it was more of the same for us," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "I didn't think we played a bad game at all. Oswego is the most opportunistic team in the country, and we're probably the least opportunistic of the good teams.

"We gotta play better defense. We can't give up two goals in the first period, one off a faceoff and the other on a bad play by one of our leaders on defense. To play catch-up was hard."

Jesse McConney scored the Lakers' first one 6:06 into the game during a 4-on-4. Jon Whitelaw made it 2-0 on a rush with just 2:39 left in the period.

Oswego held Plattsburgh to 0-for-7 on the power play. Emery said the Cardinals had some good chances, especially during a 5-on-3 late in the second period. That two-man advantage carried over into the third, and because of double minor, the Cardinals had a 5-on-4 immediately after. The Lakers killed off all four minutes.

"That's the one bad thing about power plays — when you don't score, it kinda takes away from your 5-on-5 play. Guys can get frustrated," Emery said. "But I thought we bounced back after that. We had some good looks."

But Oswego's Chris Ayotte potted a power-play goal at 7:05 for a 3-0 cushion.

Andrew Hare stopped 27 shots to post the shutout. Whitelaw finished with a goal and an assist. The Lakers are unbeaten in the last seven games of the rivalry.

Mathieu Cadieux had 25 saves for Plattsburgh.

Emery said the fourth-ranked Cardinals need to finish the regular season with a good game, and he added that he may tweak the lineup today to try to spark the offense.

"We gotta try to get on a good note going into a playoff game next week," Emery said. "You try to give guys the benefit of the doubt, but we might have to make some changes.

"We gotta try something because the guys are working hard, they're sacrificing, but we've got nothing to show."

BTW, Docking is likely to have something to show for his sacrifice, he blocked two shots with his body in the third that lead him to limp off the ice in obvious pain.

I thought the two goals from the blue line were questionable and squarely on the goaltender. It didn't appear that either shot was screened and the last goal was painfully slow to develop. I really thought Cadieux should have had them. But then, I'm only a casual observer watching an internet feed.

Also, on the 5 on 3, it didn't seem like Plattsburgh showed much movement or intensity. I trust Bob in that he thought they played well, but continued results like the past few weeks will have their season over early in March...

When does emphasizing team defense become too much?

Plattsburgh State has only scored five goals in the last four games. I believe in Emery's philosophies, but when is he going to stress generating some offense?

I'd be more concerned with that power play. Those two units are not producing. Yeah, they're creating scoring opportunities, BUT they can't find the net.

The Cards use to have one of the best PP in the country because they parked a player with skilled hands right in front of the net. Last nights game everything was on the outside. Very easy to defend and alot easier for the goalie with no traffic in front. It was like watching a bunch of Europeans play hockey everything way out and little physcial play. Dave Brown and Primollie (sorry for the spelling) didn't play like that. They were goal scoring machines.

Actually reminded me of the St Norbert v. Plattsburgh final a few years ago. The only difference is that we at least put a few shots on goal unlike in Placid that year. We didnt look that bad, just cant score when you dont crash hard in our case. The only way a team lacking the pure goal scorer scores is to crash crash crash....OH well we will see.

Hmmm...I feel like we heard all these comments at a different time earlier this season...ahh yes the same ones came out during the PrimeLink!

Then the Cards went on a 14 game unbeatean streak. Platty was missing one of its best players this weekend.

Get him back, you're at least in the SUNYAC finals at worst because plain and simple that's what Bob Emery does is get his team's to the conference finals no matter how talented or not the team is.

PS: and this one is talented.

Blake's OT goal leads Cards to victory {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 19, 2012}

Trying to ignite Plattsburgh State's offense, coach Bob Emery made some lineup changes Saturday, including inserting rarely-used Zach Blake.

The freshman forward took advantage of the opportunity, scoring his first career goal to lift the Cardinals over Cortland, 3-2, in overtime in SUNY Athletic Conference men's hockey.

The regular-season finale didn't affect the conference standings — Plattsburgh (17-4-4, 12-3-1) had already locked up second place and Cortland (6-18-1, 4-11-1) had already been eliminated from the playoffs. But even a tie against the Red Dragons could have damaged the Cardinals' NCAA tournament chances.

"This will be huge come NCAA time. It was really good we pulled it out," Emery said.

The fourth-ranked Cardinals' offensive struggles continued Saturday even though they put 52 shots on net. They trailed 1-0 after the first period despite holding a 19-7 advantage in shots and were also held without a goal in the third.

Plattsburgh has scored eight goals over its last five games.

"It's good we found a way to win that game. But it's just so frustrating from a coach's point of view, and even the players are frustrated," Emery said. "Once again the ice is titled toward their end, and we can't put the puck away.

"We hit five pipes tonight. We missed open nets."

Mark Constantine tied the game at 1-1 three minutes into the second period, and Vick Schlueter put the Cardinals ahead at 6:28.

Then Cortland's Michael Lysyj knotted it at 2-2 with 7:24 left in regulation.

Blake's winner came with 56 seconds to go in overtime with assists from Schlueter and Kyle Kudroch.

Blake assisted on Schlueter's second-period goal for his first career point. He had skated in just three games before Saturday.

"With Blake, he has a lot of offensive upside; he just needs to work on his game," Emery said. "He knows what he's gotta do to make himself an everyday hockey player at Plattsburgh. He certainly has the skill and the offensive intelligence to make us a better team."

Kudroch finished with two assists. Mathieu Cadieux turned away 27 shots in Plattsburgh's net.

Nick Zappia put the Red Dragons on the board 1:27 into the game. Mike Reilly had 49 saves in a losing effort.

Blake and Adam Scuglia were in the lineup in favor of Patrick Jobb and Michael Cassidy, and all four line combinations were shuffled.

"We were just getting stale," Emery said. "It was time to change it up. But we still didn't find the net even though we had good chances."

SUNYAC Men's Hockey Semifinal Ticket Information Announced

The Plattsburgh State athletic department announces men’s hockey ticket procedures for Saturday’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinal game at 7 p.m.

Season ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase their seats for the game on Friday, Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. at the Field House Box Office. Season ticket holders must present photo identification at the time of purchase. Tickets are $6 per person and fans will only be able to purchase their seats. Additional tickets cannot be purchased at that time.

All remaining tickets, including season tickets that are not claimed on Friday, will go on-sale to the general public at the Field House Box Office on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $6 per person.

The Plattsburgh State athletic department will be providing free tickets to all students who show a current Plattsburgh State identification. Student tickets cannot be claimed until the night of the game at the Field House Box Office, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Three picked to All-SUNYAC hockey teams - Semifinals matchups set; Cardinals to play Buffalo State Saturday {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 23, 2012}

FREDONIA — Plattsburgh State's Mike Grace, Mathieu Cadieux and Kyle Kudroch were named to the SUNY Athletic Conference men's hockey All-Conference teams this week.

A junior defenseman from Rochester, Grace made the First Team. The blueliner has 11 assists, 10 of which came in conference play. He was also named All-SUNYAC last year.

Grace has appeared in all 25 games thus far, providing a veteran presence in a defensive unit that has allowed just 48 goals. Plattsburgh has held its opponents to 1.92 goals per game, which is second in the SUNYAC and fourth in Division III.

Cadieux, an Oshawa, Ontario native, was selected as the First-Team goaltender. The sophomore has made an immediate impact in his first season with the Cardinals. He finished the regular season with a 14-4-3 record and a .931 save percentage. His 1.80 goals against-average ranks second in the SUNYAC and sixth in the country.

Cadieux is one of just three sophomores to receive All-SUNYAC accolades and the first Plattsburgh goalie to be recognized since 2008-09.

Kudroch, a senior forward, made the Third Team — his first All-SUNYAC nod. He led the Plattsburgh offense much of the year, finishing the regular season as its leading scorer with 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists). The Cottam, Ontario native has appeared in 104 games and registered 79 career points.

Semifinals set

The second-seeded Cardinals will host third-seeded Buffalo State in a SUNYAC semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Bengals edged No. 6 seed Potsdam, 4-3, in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

No. 1 seed Oswego will host No. 5 seed Fredonia, which defeated No. 6 seed Geneseo, 4-1, Wednesday. The championship game will be March 3, hosted by the highest remaining seed.

personally I played with a ankle fracture in the national Championship in 87' got hit with a slapshot the 2nd to last shift in the semi-final game,slept with my foot in a bucket of ice,then took all the painkillers I could find, and then took more, didnt know what it was it was until I got an xray a few days later:D............He'll play..and probably play better for it
