For those who don't keep track of minor league hockey here is a update on former Cards goalie Bryan Hince. In December while leading the SPHL in Wins and second in minutes played he signed a contract with the ECHL's Greenville Road Warriors where he played in 5 games since December 31st going 5-0 with a .940 save % and 1.59 GAA, on January 26th he was traded to the Idaho Steelheads and has yet to play for them, they are the ECHL Affiliate for the Dallas Stars. Good luck to Bryan with his new team.

Plattsburgh men's hockey coach shrugs off approaching milestone

Bob Emery isn't really impressed by the number 500.

It's a much smaller one — 0.742 — that's more significant to him.

With a career record of 498-156-53, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey coach is on the verge of a milestone win. Plattsburgh (13-2-4) hosts Fredonia tonight and Buffalo State tomorrow in a pair of SUNY Athletic Conference games, and Emery could potentially hit the 500 mark Saturday.

"I've never been a numbers guy. I'm not really a personal accolades guy — I was a defensive defenseman," Emery said. "So it's going to happen. When it happens, who knows? Who cares?

"If you're thinking about numbers, the only numbers that matter to me are the numbers that we've accomplished over the years, and that is almost 75 percent of wins."

Emery's career winning percentage is currently 0.742, putting him in the top five all-time among NCAA hockey coaches — Division I and Division III. A 500th win would put him in elite company as well.

Nineteen coaches have reached that plateau, including just five in Division III. Norwich's Mike McShane leads Division III coaches with 601 (244 of those came while he was coaching in Division I), and Bill Beaney of Middlebury has 561.

The other Division III coaches with at least 500 are Don Roberts (Gustavus Adolphus), John Rolli (UMass Dartmouth) and Ed Saugestad (Augsburg).

Plattsburgh assistant coach Steve Moffat said winning that many games requires consistency throughout a career.

"(Emery's) teams have always been successful," Moffat said. "He's set certainly a high precedent at Plattsburgh State. That's a testament to how he coaches, the discipline he instills in the team and just the hard work he puts into Plattsburgh.

"He certainly bleeds red and white."

Emery said he hasn't thought about the approaching milestone much, except when friends have brought it up. And even then, he said he has tried to change the subject.

He said he remembers his first win — it was an 11-2 decision at Fredonia on Oct. 27, 1989 — but not many others, adding that the focus is always on championships. He has won two national titles and 13 SUNYAC crowns at Plattsburgh.

"I think he's so successful because he gets the X's and O's going and he wants us to play our game, stick to our game," senior captain Kyle Kudroch said. "I think he's really tough on the guys, but at the same time he's a great coach. He's good at getting us prepared to play a game."

Moffat said Emery's success also stems from his trademark emphasis on discipline.

Emery played at Boston College before coaching prep hockey and then becoming an assistant at Plattsburgh in 1988. He took over the next year and is now in his 23rd season. He's the program's all-time winningest coach by a wide margin.

Emery said the game has evolved since he started.

"College hockey and hockey in general changes year in and year out, and you've always gotta be up with the times," Emery said. "I'm always studying video and talking to my friends who coach at the pro level and the Division I level and try to get ideas. We've brainstormed, and we've changed a lot of things here over the years."

He added that while he has changed as a coach, his standards haven't budged. His assistant agreed. Moffat played for the Cardinals in the mid-1990s, and he said Emery had a different style back then.

"He's still demanding. He's been demanding since he's been here. That's not going to change, and it shouldn't," said Moffat, who's in his 11th year on Emery's staff. "But he has a different approach to players. He goes about it differently, talks to guys more. He's more player-friendly. Before he might not have said a word to you.

"But he certainly cares about the players. He wants them to do well, and he's willing to help them. And I think that's a big deal for players."

Kudroch said the coach's reputation is one thing players weigh when choosing a school.

"Before coming here you definitely hear of other teams and you hear of teams that win, but you hear Plattsburgh State is a place you want to be," Kudroch said. "(Emery) knows how to win, and Cardinal hockey is all about hard work.

"If you don't have hard work, then this isn't the place for you. But if you have hard work, it's going to be a great place to play and you're definitely going to win a lot of games under him."

Cardinals down Devils in overtime {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 4, 2012}

Fredonia scored twice in Friday's third period to pull even with Plattsburgh State, but the Cardinals put the Blue Devils away in overtime.

Ryan Craig notched his second goal of the night 1:12 into the extra frame to give Plattsburgh a 3-2 win in SUNY Athletic Conference men's hockey at Stafford Ice Arena.

"That was a good hockey team we beat. Fredonia's been on a roll," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "I thought we did a good job coming back."

The third-ranked Cardinals (14-2-4, 9-1-1 SUNYAC) stretched their unbeaten streak to 13 games and snapped Fredonia's four-game winning streak.

They also stayed within a point of first-place Oswego in the SUNYAC standings and gained some more separation from the teams behind them. Fredonia and Buffalo State had been four points back, but both lost Friday.

Plattsburgh's regular-season home finale is tonight against Buffalo State.

Fredonia began the third period with 1:26 left on a power play, and goalie Mark Friesen had to stop Nick Jensen on a breakaway to prevent the Cardinals from tallying their second short-handed goal. Emery said that was one of several good chances Plattsburgh had to take a 3-0 lead, which he said would've likely changed the game.

Instead, the Blue Devils got on the board shortly after when Bradley Nunn's shot hit the iron and Stephen Castriota put in the rebound.

Mat Hehr knotted the game at 2-2 with 1:48 left in regulation.

Kyle Kudroch had a good scoring opportunity right off the bat in overtime, and the Cardinals continued to pressure until Craig scored with an assist from Mark Constantine. The senior forward said the goal came off a set play on the faceoff.

"I noticed that all their D went to the one guy, (Mike) Grace, in the corner. And the puck just went out to Constantine," Craig said. "I just (skated) for the net, hoping it would get there, and just tapped it in back door."

Fredonia (10-8-3, 5-4-3) did not register a shot in overtime.

Mathieu Cadieux turned away 28 shots to earn the win.

This was the second straight game that a team came back to tie it in the third before Plattsburgh netted a late game-winner. But while the Cardinals felt they eased up last week against Potsdam, Craig and Emery said played hard the whole way Friday.

"I think (Fredonia) came hard, but we tried to do everything we could obviously to not let them score," Craig said. "I don't think we let down in any way. It wasn't like a lack of discipline or anything like that that caused them to score."

Emery said "big-time panic" led to the tying goal, noting that a freshman had the puck. But he added that the final result was what mattered most.

"I like how the guys didn't give up," Emery said. "They played hard right to the end. They found a way to win."

Plattsburgh's first two goals came from the special-teams units.

With a little more than five minutes left in the opening period, Jake Mooney sent a pass from behind the red line to the net, and Craig one-timed it over Friesen's right shoulder for a power-play goal.

While the Cardinals where killing a penalty in the second, the puck popped out of a crowd at the boards, and Jared Docking wheeled the length of the ice and fired from the left circle to make it 2-0.

Friesen totaled 36 saves.

The win was the 499th of Emery's career, leaving him one away from become the sixth Division III coach to reach 500.

Plattsburgh State men shut out Buffalo State, 1-0, in SUNYAC play

Jake Mooney scored the Cardinals' only goal Saturday, and it was enough for a win — and a milestone for their coach.

Mooney tallied on a second chance late in the first period and Plattsburgh State blanked SUNYAC Athletic Conference foe Buffalo State, 1-0, at Stafford Ice Arena.

It was coach Bob Emery's 500th career win, making him the sixth NCAA Division III men's hockey coach to reach that mark.

"I really don't think too much about 500 wins, 600 wins, 400 wins or anything like that because you want to put focus on winning championships," Emery said. "But if you want to talk about numbers, the numbers that mean a lot to me and mean a lot to the fans is being successful every year, and I think we've been able to do that during my time here at Plattsburgh."

His career record is 500-156-53, and his .743 winning percentage ranks fourth in NCAA men's hockey.

Emery always stresses defense, but Saturday the Cardinals didn't spend have to much time in that end. They registered 42 shots, and Mathieu Cadieux had to make just 15 saves to earn the shutout.

"I think not so much defense won the game for us, but I think our offense was our best defense (Saturday)," Emery said. "We really controlled the puck, possessed the puck and had great puck management in the offensive zone."

No. 3 Plattsburgh (15-2-4, 10-1-1 SUNYAC) created good scoring chances from the start and connected in the final minute of the first period.

After Ryan Craig was stoned by Kevin Carr and Jared Docking hit the far post from nearly the same spot, Mooney beat the Buffalo State netminder. But it took two tries.

Carr stopped the first shot with his pads, and then the freshman forward put the puck past him with 44 seconds left. Craig and Mark Constantine assisted.

Mooney now leads Plattsburgh freshmen in scoring with five goals and 10 assists, and his 15 points tie him for third overall on the team scoring list.

The Cardinals continued to keep Carr busy and held a 33-11 advantage in shots through two periods. Carr ended up with 41 saves.

"We didn't find the back of the net, but I really didn't feel like the game was a 1-0 game. I thought we were playing great hockey," Emery said.

In its previous two games, Plattsburgh gave up a tying goal in the third period before going on to win. Mooney said the Cardinals played a strong final stanza Saturday.

"I think we've been emphasizing that recently a lot, but I think (Saturday) we especially played with a lot more confidence in the third period, which really helped us out," Mooney said. "We kept the pressure on them. So when we're in their end the whole time, it really helps out on the defensive front."

Plattsburgh remained one point out of first place in the SUNYAC standings and can finish no worse than second, which means it's guaranteed a first-round bye in the conference playoffs and will host a semifinal game.

The Cardinals also avenged their only SUNYAC loss, a 4-3 setback in Buffalo, and ended the Bengals' winning streak against them.

"We haven't beat them in the three contests before that," Mooney said. "I wasn't there for the first two losses, but the (last) one hurt. So it's nice to get 'em back for sure."

BTW, Kevin Houle picked up his 200th win as the Cardinal's Women's Coach (8 seasons).

Plattsburgh State finished the regular season unbeaten at home (11-0-1) for the first time since the 2008-2009 season (14-0).

Random Statistics of the Day

* If the season ended today, Mathieu Cadieux would finish second all-time in Plattsburgh save percentage (.935) and goals-against average (1.69) in a single-season. Only Niklas Sundberg had better numbers, which occurred during the 1998-1999 season. Sundberg had a .946 save percentage and 1.41 goals-against average during those years. Cadieux would also tie for third all-time (Brad Erbsland 1997-1998) with shutouts in a single season at three.

* IF Plattsburgh can make the NCAA tournament quarterfinals (assuming they will play seven more games, which includes a first round bye), they'd be in contention for giving up the least amount of goals in a single-season. The record is 54 back in 2008-2009. They're currently at 38, and if you multiply their current goals-against average by seven more potential games, they'd end up somewhere around 51.

* Plattsburgh State is currently on a 14 game unbeaten streak at 10-0-4. The longest overall unbeaten streak in team history is 28, which began on October 19, 1986 and ended on March 14, 1987.

Editorial: A pair of aces among the Cards

How fitting was it for Bob Emery and Kevin Houle to achieve coaching milestones on the same day and in the same building.

Emery reached 500 career victories as Plattsburgh State men's hockey coach last Saturday at Stafford Arena just hours after Houle had recorded his 200th win as women's coach on the same surface.

The accomplishments came nearly 40 years to the day after the first hockey game was played there.

Emery and Houle go back a long way. They were teammates at Boston College, graduating in 1986. When Emery was thrust into the interim head coaching position at Plattsburgh State in 1989 with the sudden resignation of Steve Hoar, his first order of business was to contact Houle and encourage him to be his assistant.

Almost overnight, they took over a troubled program facing NCAA and SUNYAC sanctions for transgressions committed a few years earlier. They worked through the uncertainty to lead the Cardinals to a 20-5-1 finish and appearance in the national tournament.

But, it was no secret to Cardinal hockey followers that Emery was not the first choice to lead the team into the 1990s. With the team seemingly headed to defeat in Elmira in the ECAC tournament, he and Houle resigned themselves to being elsewhere the following year.

Fortunately for Plattsburgh State, the Cardinals went on to make it to the NCAA tournament that year. The argument for retaining Emery and Houle grew stronger with each subsequent victory. Ultimately, they were rehired and in 1992, rewarded Plattsburgh State with a national championship.

Emery, in his 23rd season, has compiled a record of 500-156-53 and led Plattsburgh to two national championships, 15 NCAA tournament appearances and 13 SUNYAC titles. His career .743 winning percentage is fourth-best in NCAA hockey history across all divisions and his 500 victories rank fourth among active Division III coaches.

Houle has a record of 201-35-16 since taking over as women's head coach in 2003. He led Plattsburgh State to back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008, seven NCAA tournament appearances and two ECAC Women's West championships. He is a three-time American Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year. His amazing success ratio of 83 percent is the highest among all men's and women's active coaches across all divisions.

But their measure of success goes well beyond that. They have enhanced Plattsburgh State's image nationally and worked tirelessly for the good of the game.

Emery is a past chairman of the NCAA Division III men's hockey championship committee and has remained active at many levels. Houle has been an assistant coach with the U.S. Women's National Team and participated in three national training camps.

They have reached out to the Plattsburgh community in many instances. Cardinal hockey teams have been involved in numerous charitable activities, most notably through an ongoing partnership with the North Country Down Syndrome Association, which estimates the Cardinals have raised more than $10,000 for its cause.

Not only are Emery and Houle big winners, but the community wins, as well.

Brockport stuns Plattsburgh State {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Feb. 11, 2012}

Brockport scored three goals over the final two periods to end the Cardinals' 14-game unbeaten streak and make catching first-place Oswego that much more difficult for Plattsburgh.

James Cody recorded a hat trick and Nick Panepinto tallied the go-ahead goal late in the third as Brockport won the SUNY Athletic Conference men's hockey game, 4-2, Friday. According to the Brockport's Athletic Communications department, it was just the second time in 75 meetings that the Golden Eagles beat the Cardinals.

"I felt if our team wanted to win it bad enough, we would've of won," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "We didn't play a smart second period. Guys didn't get the puck in deep. We got caught out there on some long changes, and we took a couple bad penalties because we were tired.

"The momentum shifted right there in the second period from Plattsburgh to Brockport."

The Golden Eagles (8-12-7, 4-8-2 SUNYAC) became just the second SUNYAC team to beat the Cardinals this season, handing them their first loss since Nov. 25.

Plattsburgh (15-3-4, 10-2-1) slipped to three points behind Oswego in the conference standings with three games left. To finish first, the Cardinals would need to win out and get some help.

"This was a huge loss for us in the league and on the NCAA clipboard, no doubt about it," Emery said. "But again, we have to want it. We have to want it real bad."

Plattsburgh travels to Geneseo tonight.

Cody tied Friday's game at 2-2 in the middle of the second period, and Panepinto put the Golden Eagles ahead with 2:58 left in the third. Brendon Rothfuss and Mike Hollander assisted on the winner. Cody added an empty-net goal.

"It's no secret we don't have a lot of good scorers. We can't score. So we gotta play good defense," Emery said. "We lost a crucial faceoff on their first goal. The second goal we had bad D-zone coverage on a delayed penalty, and the third goal was another bad D-zone coverage."

Oliver Wren made 37 saves for Brockport, and Mathieu Cadieux had 22 for Plattsburgh.

Kyle Taylor gave the Cardinals a lead 3:48 into the game on a power play, but Cody answered 59 seconds later. Kyle Kudroch scored at 9:23 to send the Cardinals into the intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Taylor and Kudroch both finished with two points.

"We'll see if we get the leadership to bounce back," Emery said. "You think Geneseo's not going to be pumped up to play us? Never mind that they have confidence now that they've seen Brockport beat us.

"We'll see what we're made out of."

Do you know if the all-time team vs. team records are on the web somewhere? I remember way back they used to put them in the game programs but don't think they do anymore. Would be really cool to see (esp vs. teams that are now D-I).
