Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

From the college's website:

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey program will hold its bi-annual Cardinal Alumni Weekend on July 16-18.

On Friday, there will be an alumni hockey game at 5 p.m. at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center (the former Lake City Stars Arena) located on 90 Sharron Avenue. A pizza party will follow at the Plattsburgh Field House on Rugar Street.

Saturday's activities begin with a golf tournament at Adirondack Golf Course. The four-person scramble has a 9 a.m. shotgun start. There will be prizes for the top finishers, longest drive, closest-to-the pin, skins and more. Following golf, Geoffrey's Pub and Restaurant will host a barbeque and hockey recognition ceremony for recent Cardinal Sports Hall of Famers, including 2009 Class of Danny Brown and Dave Piromalli.

For more information, contact Steve Moffat in the Hockey Office at (518) 564-3607, (518) 324-9348.

Does anyone have a copy of the Press Republican sports section from the day after PSU won the title in 1987? If you do, could you drop me a line at billr@westelcom.com

Card hockey alums return to ice (From the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 7-17-2010)

PLATTSBURGH — The stories flowed almost as easily as the goals Friday night in the semi-annual Plattsburgh State alumni hockey game at Ameri-Can North Sports Center.

Players representing four decades of Cardinal hockey relived the glory days in a contest that invoked memories of a highly successful program.

For the record, the White defeated the Red 16-10. The game consisted of two 30-minute halves.

Jay Perras scored five goals and Danny Brown, four, to lead the White while Ben Calkins and Jason Barnhart had hat tricks. Rick Strack, the Cardinals' All-America goalie turned alum forward, completed the scoring. Chad Kemp, Doug Carr, Jim Patrick, Mike Talbot and Mike Deloria all were credited with assists.

Trevor Cameron and Steve Moffat, who have dominated in senior league play at Ameri-Can, combined for seven goals, but couldn't deliver a victory to the Red side. John Wells, Doug Kimura and Michel Talbot lit the lamp for the Reds.

Joe Bevilacque picked up five assists while Bobby Owen, Lou Martin, Ed McGloine and John Laurie also figured for assists.

Jim Patrick was in goal for the White while Rick Brunner got the call for the Red.

Hockey Alumni weekend continues today with the annual golf tournament at Adirondack Golf & Country Club.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

A very sad day for Cardinal Hockey & DIII Hockey :(

Cancer claims Cardinals' Daoust
Member of 2001 NCAA hockey championship team was 34 (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 7-28-2010)

Mike Daoust once scored a goal heard all around Division III hockey.

But the former Plattsburgh State skater will be remembered for much more than that.

Daoust lost his battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma last Saturday at the age of 34...

"In the 1999 (NCAA Division III) quarterfinals, Mike scored the goal in double-overtime of the mini-game that ended Middlebury's five-year reign as national champion," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "It was a goal heard all around Division III hockey and it sent us into the Final Four...

"He will be missed."

Daoust, who scored nine goals and added 36 assists in a four-year playing career at Plattsburgh State that spanned 101 games, battled to the end and attended the wedding of his wife's (Kristen) brother on Saturday.

"Dogger fought wholeheartedly and persistently and was set to begin a new trial of medicine to fight the cancer he had," said former Plattsburgh State teammate Joe Russo. "He sadly and unfortunately didn't get the chance to start it.

"We have lost one of the best I have ever stood shoulders with."
...
"Mike was the first guy I met on campus at Plattsburgh in the summer of 2000," said Retter. "He was the same genuine person that first day as he was all the days I was lucky enough to have known him.

"Always with a smile on his face and positive attitude towards life, he did not change his outlook even in his final months which were a battle."
...
"The world has lost a great person — a gentleman if you will."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Still my very favorite Cardinal Hockey moment, ahead of the national championships and anything else: http://www.cvblexpos.com/Daoust1.mp3

My condolences.

Ah, yes....what a great call by Ducky and a moment that made Mike Daoust an instant Cardinal legend. He certainly wasn't the flashing player, but one of "those guys" that every team has to have that is almost impossible to replace. My condolences to Mike's family.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Thanks Dyce I was looking for my copy. I still have that moment imprinted into my memory. While it may never go down into his stats, that was one of (and some of us still feel) the biggest goals in Cardinal history.

I hope to see a small tribute to Mike the first home game of the season. I think it would be a great honor to watch his parents recieve something at center ice. Like Steve said, he may not have put up the most points, but Mike was a very hard worker and a great person off the ice. Very sad.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

And as I said before, the goal may never go down in the stat sheet but it was one of, if not the biggest goal in Cardinal History. I know I would be all for it.

For the record, I would love to see it happen.

It would be a great way to recognize the importance of that one goal. He and Coletta showed a great awareness and willingness to work as a team to get the result.

It would be a great way to recognize the off-ice impact he had on the program, the dedication he showed day-in and day-out.

It would be a great way to recognize the strength he showed in his battle with cancer.

Teamwork, dedication, and strength are three qualities any program wants to exhibit. Retiring his number would be a perfect way to honor this former Cardinal who clearly exhibited all three.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

I do hear there is some stuff in the works....stay tuned.....

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Was this closest to your weight wins? :)

I had a bad day when I went bowling and golfed on the same day. Got the sports confused -- got a 212 on the golf course and an 88 bowling.

Nice!

It was a four-person scramble otherwise I would have close to the mendoza line.

We ended up shooting 11-under and finishing third. I sank a 20-foot birdie putt on our last hole.

I think we only used my shot two or three other times the rest of the way.

My buddy Eric was unconscious. We used his driver 16 out of the 18 holes and he won longest drive and closest to the pin.
