This one really hurts.
Jarrett Gold's goal just 20 seconds into the game Friday night surprisingly held up as Cortland stunned Plattsburgh State, 2-0, in men's hockey at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals (13-5-1, 6-5-0) had their 12-game unbeaten streak come to an end and certainly didn't give Plattsburgh State any momentum heading into tonight's home game with top-ranked Oswego, which took care of Potsdam, 8-1, Friday night.
The determined Red Dragons (4-13-2, 3-7-1) kept their SUNYAC Tournament playoff hopes alive while beating the Cardinals for the fourth time in their hockey history.
It was also the first time Cortland has shut out Plattsburgh State.
"This was a bad, bad loss for us — it's going to really hurt us," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery.
"But, I felt our effort was good. We carried the play and we moved the puck well on the powerplay. Maybe, we just didn't deserve it. I don't know."
The Cardinals outshot the Red Dragons, 40-16, and Brittan Kuhlman stood tall in the Cortland nets with 40 saves to record the shutout.
Plattsburgh State's aim was off, however, as many of the shots were at Kuhlman's chest.
"We made their goalie look good," said Emery. "And, I don't know how many times we missed the nets with shots."
Gold gave the Red Dragons the lead when he turned in the faceoff circle and sent a low shot past Plattsburgh State goalie Josh Leis.
"We had bad coverage on the play and you can't give up a goal that early in a game," said Emery.
It stayed 1-0 until six seconds remained in the second period.
The Cardinals were applying the pressure on a powerplay before the puck deflected out of the offensive zone and Joey Christiano went in on a breakaway as the puck eluded Leis.
"They had good timing on their second goal and it's one of those plays where nobody was at fault," Emery said.
"But, it's a Cardinal sin to give up a goal early in the period and a goal late in the period."
The frustrated Cardinals pulled Leis for an extra attacker with 1:33 left in regulation, but were still unable to find the back of the net as Kuhlman held his ice.
Plattsburgh State came up empty on five power-play opportunities in the contest.
