Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

If the job is contingent on a degree from Utica, is there a potential NCAA problem here? Especially if the "friend of his father" is someone associated with Utica College?

As for Hammer's comment, don't comment in a Plattsburgh thread if you don't want to here back from the "cult followers".

I heard he's becoming CEO of a large firm owned by a cousin of a friend of his uncle Bob. Don't say anything on this site that would be taken as offensive by any of the "followers". They will all escape from whatever facility they have been confined to and track you down.:D

Good luck to Cody and Matt! You hate to see great players like them go, but understand the reasons. No one can fault a player for trying to further their professional career. I have little doubt that Cody will have the chance to play after college, but realizes it will not be a lifetime career. Utica is getting some MUCH needed help on defense to help their young goaltenders. A true win win situation for Cody and Utica!! I hope, and truely think the fans at PSU will, give Cody a great round of applause when he comes back to the Stafford.

You have to respect students who put their education first.

The cult followers make me laugh. They often do not see logic in any posts. But yes good luck to Cody he had a great career especially for a player with such limited skills. Hopefully Plattsburgh has a group coming in that read the list of majors before deciding to attend. But we all know most of them will be gone after a year or two anyway.

Oh wow!!! I didn't know people never changed their majors when they got into college. What a concept. That must be something new. I always thought when you paid you money, you were stuck in that major for life. This is just amazing. Maybe all incoming or those planning on attending college can look into Hammers magic ball so they can see exactly what class, career, majors they will be taking. I mean god for bid some change their mind when they got there because they found a differnt job opportunity, and or realized what they thought what they wanted to do when they got to a school just wasn't what wanted after all.....but hey, what do us "cult followers" know? Maybe if we sat at our computer desk drinking our energy drinks in the basement of our mothers house, maybe just maybe, we might know why a player or coach did or didn't do something for his or her own reason.

The sarcasm is a little much and judging by the spelling and usage of words I doubt you know how college is. Listen maybe he did leave plats for his maejor but my point is that people are leaving in larger numbers than before and a solid number of the players played on a regular basis. Maybe a different approach should be looked into. They have continued to win but not as dominant as in past years. Once again this is no shot at Plattsburgh as it's a top 10 program every year. Just my two cents on the issue. Also no need to write hostile sarcastic posts over the Internet

I apologize, but I can't help but chuckle at your posts on this subject. If you are going to bring up the points that you bring up, you probably should do a little research, to avoid not knowing what you are talking about. First off, I wouldn't be bringing up spelling because you actually spelled two words wrong and there are a few grammar mistakes. More importantly, perhaps the reason why hockey players are transferring at a larger rate than in recent years has nothing to do with the approach of Emery, and more to do with the players, and what they want to do with their education. I think this might be a slight issue, but not something I'm extremely worried about as a Cardinal fan - as you said, Plattsburgh is a top-10 program every year. I also think its funny that you said Plattsburgh is not as dominant as in past years. Again, I don't think this has anything to do with transferring players - I think they were dominant two/three years ago mostly because of the kid between the pipes, but, remember, before that kid, for 4-5 years, this team wasn't dominant, and there weren't many players transferring at all. This is a better team now than they were 3-6 years ago.

I'm not worried about the grammar, it's one of the oldest and easiest online "slams" around, even a caveman could use it. I would say winning multiple SUNYAC titles, Final Four appearances, and a very nice winning %. All of these experts know so much about a program they don't follow, that my friend is comical. I can only think of 2 players who left solely because of Emery. The majority leave for playing time, and are helped by the college (Emery and Moff) to transition to the new school. Some guys do not fit into Emerys system and do not transition into DIII hockey like the coaches would hope, which is great for DIII because they can take their talents elsewhere with out losing eligibility. Guys who were top scorers on their team find themselves on the 4th line or pine riding. Some guys can't handle it and move on to be 2nd or 1st line starters at other schools....how does that look bad? Some guys don't want to put it the effort and work ethic Emery demands or more so they just don't transition into a top DIII player.

Guys like Cody, Galan, Belanger, Hince, Wilson....we should fault the school for these guys changing their majors or going after a lifelong dream as well.

But hey, its such a black eye.....

Sorry sticks that wasn't all directed at you. Just got to love how people not even associated with Plattsburgh are experts on everything that goes on there and want to turn everything into a negative. Very good points with the comparison to 4-5 years ago. Keep in mind during that time Plattsburgh was getting little to no support from the administration and little to no financial aid was available. Even making the SUNYAC Championships was a win in its own during those years. Between budget cuts,FA cuts, early departures and other teams elevating their programs what Plattsburgh HAS accomplished is pretty impressive. But hey, we're just cult followers.

I guess I hit on a soft spot? Very angry lol we are talking d3 hockey in June, Take it down a notch. These things may be true, but You speak as if you are a 3rd asst coach at Plattsburgh. Im sure things are a little different than you say. I feel like with d3 as long as you have the facilities, you will be a top 15 program. The only ones that cant be anymore are the ones that cant get the players into the school. It seems Middlebury is having trouble with this. Anyway just some food for thought, Ill sit back and wait for a long comment insulting me from PSUCHAMPS, but hey, lets try not to get worked up over this.

2001 and how many different champions have their been since? 5? Had Plattsburgh had the help others schools had during much of that period and or were able to hang on to a few of the star players....thing could have been different. Im not seeing a point. If winning a National Championship defines a "GOOD" season they there are a lot of dissapointed teams out there. Plattsburgh has been a top team for years. They never went through a post Mclean or Aucoin area like Norwich did.

I certainly get your point.

But, the 2004-05 to 2006-07 Plattsburgh squads didn't exactly light the world on fire.

Granted, they made the SUNYAC finals still every season, they racked up an awful lot of losses/ties in those seasons.

You lost me here. To what "help" are you referring? $$ aid, admissions stds, facilities, coaching, ??

During the "dark ages" Plattsburghs fin aid and mens hockey budget were cut big time. Several players could not afford the tuition any more as they were accepted at one amount, yet charged a much higher a year(s) later. Plattsburgh lost several key recruits because of the $$$ they couldn't give compared to what other top programs could. There was a period when there was NO finacial aid breaks given to foreign students. Thus you saw Emery change his recruiting from Canadian to American players.

Also Emery had his budget cut in half. Was it still higher then most D3 schools, sure. But was it as much as the other perenial D3 schools? Highly unlikely. So again Emery had to change his recruiting, and was unable to go see players multple times (another reason I think you see some guys not transitioning into D3/Cardinal hockey and leaving). Again, no fault of Emerys. He has been very vocal on the road blocks and obsticles he has had to face since the 2003 season. Just look at the schedule. Plattsburgh had to drop Elmira in favor of Castleton due to lack of funding. Emery loved making his trips to Boston to play teams, but can't because of the tight budget. Again, is it still more then most D3 teams, im sure, but of the perenial powers? Doubtful. Emery had the luxery of having one of the best programs in D3 in the 90's with good aid to bring in top notch recruits. Now that the fish has gotten smaller and the pond bigger, with all the hurdles (aid cut, budget cut, transfers, early graduations, losing his long time assistant coach, star players chasing their dreams) what he's been able to accomplish validates his coaching career as one of the best in D3 hockey.

OK, so where is the financial support from Alums and hockey fans to make up the shortfall?

Plattsburgh has never had a large alumni fund. And what was there went towards the "new" Stafford and other things around campus, not to help foot the bills of students. If you look at Plaatsburghs record its pretty clear when the cuts happened and when they started coming back. They are still no where near other top flight programs and probably never will be, but its a start back in that direction.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm somewhat privy to the NYS funding mechanisms, and the outlook for the next couple of years appears to be as bleak (or worse) as the last few. It's a whole new world for NYS public institutions, especially if Washington decides to rework Medicaid reimbursement considering that NY is currently the largest suckler from this federal teat.
