You have to respect the job Emery and his staff has done this season - the title of this thread says it all - they under promised and over delivered...I hope the Cardinals and the Lakers continue to represent the SUNYAC all the way to the Land of 10,000 Lakes...

It was a very odd season for Bob and his boys but in the end it is just like so many other seasons , SUNYAC CHAMPS , on to the NCAA Tourney.

From one of the "so called experts" (add Bobs accent ),congrats and job well done , and lets hope "the Best is Yet To Come"

Cardinals capture 20th SUNYAC title - {Article by John Coryer from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 3/6/2011}

A frustrating season in conference regular season play is all but forgotten now for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team.

The Cardinals are SUNY Athletic Conference champions for the 20th time and have 16 tournament titles since 1985.

Four players scored a goal each and tournament Most Valuable Player Josh Leis stopped 20 of 21 shots Saturday as the Cardinals skated to a 4-1 victory over Fredonia in the championship game at the Stafford Ice Arena.

As a result the fourth-seeded Cardinals earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

"We came out with a solid effort and played great hockey for 58 minutes," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "But, with the adversity we've faced this season, I'm not going to be negative about those two minutes.

"Fredonia is a great team and this was our best effort all season. We had great leadership and dedication. I knew going in Fredonia wanted to keep us to two goals or less."

"We had a tough year in the conference, but we know we're a good team," said Leis. "This is the best time of the year to do it."

The Cardinals came out strong right from the start, outshooting the Blue Devils, 13-4, in the first period.

But, it was still a scoreless game when Eric Satim scored a power-play goal from near the faceoff circle at the 15:15 mark.

Then, with just 19 seconds left in the first, defenseman Cody Adams took Patrick Jobb's pass in the center of the ice and sent a low slapshot into the net for a 2-0 Plattsburgh State lead.

Fredonia (14-13-1) turned up its play early in the second period and spent a good share of the first five minutes or so in the Plattsburgh State end.

"They didn't get a lot of shots on goal, but some of them were of good quality," said Emery. "Especially early in the second period. That was a difference in the game with Josh making those saves."

"Fredonia came out hard in the second period," Leis said. "Our players do a good job at keeping the opponents' shots to the outside, but at times I need to make a big save."

The Cardinals (20-7-1) added to their lead at 14:14 of the second period when Ryan Farnan knocked in a rebound off a Kyle Taylor shot. Then, shortly after at 15:20, Dylan Clarke deflected Barry Roytman's shapshot into the net for a 4-0 Plattsburgh State advantage.

The Cardinals held on to the shutout until the Blue Devils pulled goalie Mark Friesen for an extra attacker with just over two minutes remaining. Ben Waldman went up top to beat Leis at 18:38 to get Fredonia on the board.

The Cardinals finished with a 35-21 shot advantage, with Leis making 20 saves and Friesen, 31.

"We did a good job getting the puck in deep and played a lot of the game in the Fredonia end," said Emery.

"It was a solid team effort."

Leis was a standout in the Cardinals' overtime win at Geneseo the weekend before.

"Definitely, I was happy that there wasn't an overtime in this game," he said. "I was able to make some big saves in the Geneseo game as well, but I wasn't expecting to be the tournament MVP.

"It feels awesome."

The all-tournament team included Plattsburgh State forwards Ryan Craig and Satim, along with defenseman Adams. Waldman and defenseman Steve Rizer represented Fredonia, which entered the event as the sixth seed and made a great run to the finals.

The Cardinals will now await word of who they will play and where in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Hey was still unhappy with the last two minutes of the game. You've got to love Coach Emery. :)

EDIT: And yes, I did read what he said in the next sentence.

Who would of thunk it after concluding the third weekend of the season at 2-4?

Congratulations to Coach Emery and the boys! 20X SUNYAC Champions!

You bet!!! It was one heck of a game to watch! The Cardinals hit the ice with fire and desire in their eyes and never let up. They showed just how strong a team they are and what they are capable of. Everyone I spoke to agreed that they had tremendous emotion and knew what they had to do. Leis, again was on his game from the drop of the puck. Fredonia played well and they showed character and class. They made a good run and deserve praise for their effort. So, now we wait and now everyone is equal again and so it starts.

Just a quick aside to Cardsrule: it appears you need to make a slight adjustment to your signature

Edit: Argh, and you did it while I was typing my post. Nicely done :)

Great crowd last night. It sort of felt like the old days in the old Ronny B. Hats off to the students who showed up in the best numbers i've seen in a very long time.

I was actually planning on waiting a little longer to make the change. You see, I just made 2 adjustments to my signature. Plattsburgh won theirs, and Elmira won theirs.

My reason for waiting: the SECHL Championship Game in Albany, NY, featuring NE #1 Siena College vs. NE #2 William Paterson University (in terms of conference seedings it's #3 Siena vs. #1 WPU), started an hour ago. I wanted to wait to see if I needed to make THREE changes. But I decided to change it before someone called me out on it, and apparently I did just in time. ;)

According to this there is still one change to make: http://www.ncaa.com/history/icehockey-men/d3

...and I was a big fan of "(vacated)" they seem to have had their title stripped

I'm not, I saw "vacated" in action at Oswego and in Plattsburgh, both times I nearly froze to death.

Question: It was a packed standing room only game in Plattsburgh here Saturday. The attendance records show that barely 2000 people showed up yet the stats on the rink claims it can hold 3,500. Why the discrepancy?

Because that was the old capacity. Last I know USCHO hasn't changed it.

At the conclusion of last night's episode of Behind the Bench, Coach Emery noted that 570 student tickets were sold Saturday night!

By the way, I just e-mailed Erin Conner regarding the reasoning behind PSUC's Athletic Department electing to go with ten dollars as the adult general admission fee for the NCAA Quarterfinal game. I'll post her response when I get one.

I believe that the NC$$ sets the price for the game. Plattsburgh has no say in the matter. I also believe the SUNYAC does the same thing for their play-off games.

The NC$$ sets a minimum price. This year, it is $5 General Admission, $6 for a reserved seat ticket, and $3 for a student of either participating institution with ID.

Plattsburgh is responsible for tacking on the extra $4.

$10.00 is very acceptible in my opinion

Oh, don't get me wrong, I agree. If I were there, or even if I were in Albany, I'd make the trip up and pay my $10. The $1,000 round-trip-airfare I'd have to fork out right now... now THAT'S a steep price.

(Although, to be honest, if I were in NY now, I'd actually be on a flight to California for the ACHA D2 National Championships with Siena during the game Saturday... so I wouldn't be there anyway!) :D
