SUNYAC Player of the Year: Jordan Oye - Fredonia

Interesting. Herb Hammond Award goes to a guy who didn't lead his team in points in SUNYAC play or overall.

Geneseo standing in Cards' way - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/26/2011}

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team found a way to win Wednesday.

The Cardinals need more of the same tonight.

The fourth-seeded Cardinals (18-7-1) are at second-seeded Geneseo (16-7-2) at 7 p.m. in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals.

"It's going to be a tough game for us," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "Geneseo is a lot like us — they battle for what they get.

"They'll have a good crowd at the game and it will be a good atmosphere. They'll play with a lot of emotion right from the get-go
."

The Cardinals are coming off Wednesday's 4-3 home win over Morrisville in the quarterfinals. Plattsburgh State trailed, 3-2, in the third period before rallying and winning it on Jared Docking's goal at 11:58 of overtime.

"We weren't able to get the three-goal lead we would have liked and Morrisville came back to take the lead," said Emery.

"But, we didn't panic under pressure and it was real good that we found a way to win the game. We worked real hard for our four goals — that was old-fashioned Cardinal hockey.

"We're in the playoffs now and we're not looking back. We know what we do best and we need to focus on that. It's back to the drawing board on Geneseo now."

Top-seeded Oswego entertains sixth-seeded Fredonia in the other semifinal.

The Cardinals and Knights split their two regular-season meetings.

Plattsburgh State opened its season with a 7-3 setback at Geneseo on Oct. 29. Despite a 38-26 advantage in shots on goal, the Cardinals used three goaltenders in the game and trailed, 6-1, at one time in the third.

Then, in the rematch in Plattsburgh on Jan. 21 the Cardinals skated to a 4-2 victory in a hard-fought game, with Craig getting an empty-net goal to seal it. Plattsburgh State scored three times in the second for a 3-0 lead before the Knights tallied twice in the third to get to within one goal.

"We didn't play very well at their place the first time," said Emery. "We thought we were too good at the time and we didn't work hard enough to be successful.

"The second time, we were able to get the three-goal lead and had to hold on."

The Knights closed out the regular season with five wins in their last seven games. Geneseo last played on Feb. 19 in a 7-1 loss at Oswego.

Geneseo has a couple of 30-point forwards in freshman Zachary Vit (13-22-35) and junior Jonathan Redick (9-21-30). The Knights have three other players with 20 points or more.

The goalie duties for Geneseo have been shared by junior Cory Gershon (7-4-1, 2.24 gaa) and sophomore Adrian Rubenuik (8-3-1, 2.72 gaa).

After going unbeaten against some difficult non-conference competition, Emery is still waiting for that one game where the Cardinals put it all together against a SUNYAC opponent.

Tonight would be a good time to do so.

"We work so hard for our goals," he said. "But, we're due for a game where we get continued great leadership and work ethic, along with almost flawless defense."

The Cardinals left for Geneseo on Thursday to beat the bad weather that was expected.

As well as the Rookie of the Year Award not going to the first team All-Conference goalie???

Cardinals to host SUNYAC final - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/27/2011}

When the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament began, who thought the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team would be at home for the finals?

But, that's how everything worked out Saturday night.

Ryan Craig's overtime goal lifted the fourth-seeded Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over second-seeded Geneseo, while six-seeded Fredonia pulled out a 2-1 overtime win over top-seeded and top-ranked Oswego in the tournament semifinals.

As a result, the Cardinals will host Fredonia in the finals on Saturday at 7 p.m.

"You can only worry about yourself and the present," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "I didn't know what else was going to happen tonight.

"All I know is that there was a lot at stake for us, with a possible NCAA Tournament berth on the line. We were playing for our lives."

It was the second overtime win in as many games for Plattsburgh State, which skated to a home win over Morrisville in the quarterfinals.

"These type of games take a lot out of you," said Emery. "But, they are more fun when you win."

Saturday's game was tied, at 1-all, entering the third period when Dylan Clarke's power-play goal gave the Cardinals the lead at the 5:36 mark.

Plattsburgh State (19-7-1) withstood Geneseo's pressure until only 1:09 was left in regulation. That's when Ryan Bulach scored on a rebound for the Knights (16-8-2) to force overtime.

Both teams had their chances in the extra session before Craig tallied the game-winner at the 17:47 mark.

"It would have been easy for us to lose the momentum after giving up the late goal," said Emery. "But, we came out for the overtime with great leadership and emotion. We really took it to them.

"When they tied it, we were caught out there too long."

Danny Scagnelli's power-play goal in the final minute of the first period gave Geneseo a 1-0 lead.

Plattsburgh State, however, tied it in the second on Vick Schlueter's goal at 6:33.

The Knights held a 39-37 shot advantage and Josh Leis had a big game in goal for the Cardinals, stopping 37 of 39 shots. Cory Gershon made 34 saves for the Knights.

"We got great goaltending and good defense," said Emery. "Josh can play as well as anyone when he stays focused. We got better as a team as the game went on.

"Our conditioning also showed. We still had some defensive lapses, however, and we had some neutral zone turnovers in the second when we didn't play our style of hockey."

In Fredonia's upset of Oswego, Ben Waldman scored the game-winning goal at 11:34 of overtime and Mark Friesen stopped 43 of 44 Laker shots in net for the Blue Devils.

"I'm happy we're playing for the SUNYAC championship again in front of the best fans in Division III," said Emery.

"But, being home doesn't guarantee a win."

One hell of a game last night for sure; must have been a fun watch (Genny's pep band is tremendous). Old school excitement from Ducky (I think he almost knocked the connection out on the game winner). Loved his Gleason reference as well ("Mmm..How Sweet It Is...").
Now, somebody PLEASE tell me Uncle Brucie's not going to make us non-season ticket holders wait until Saturday at 5:30.

Strongly disagree. Now that we (students) have to actually put effort into getting tickets before the game the students who get the tickets, actually show up. For the last two years we had empty seats because people got tickets but were too lazy to show up.

Just back from Geneseo and it was well worth the trip! Exciting game to say the least! Good up and down action and fairly even until the overtime. Then Plattsburgh was on fire! I couldn't believe how many chances they had to win it early on. Good crowd, polite and friendly students and overall a good time for everyone. Certainly a pleasant surprise to get home ice for the finals.

Ryan Craig in the first two games of the SUNYAC playoffs: 4 Goals for 4 Points and a +5 rating.

Hat trick vs Morrisville and the game winner in OT versus Geneseo.

Congrats Ryan! What a great asset he's been to our team. :)

Can you imagine having five more of these D-I transfers like Oswego?! :D
