Cards look to settle score - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/11/2011}

One of the lowlights this season for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team came on Nov. 19 in a 6-2 home loss to Buffalo State.

The Cardinals will be looking to exact some revenge on the Bengals tonight at 7 p.m. in State University of New York Athletic Conference play.

It will be a road weekend for Plattsburgh State, which plays at Fredonia on Saturday night.

Very little went right for the Cardinals (15-6-1, 7-6) in their earlier meeting with Buffalo State, despite holding a 45-27 shot advantage.

"No doubt, we owe one to Buffalo State," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "They took it to us the first time we played them.

"But, when we looked at this trip in the summertime, we knew it was going to be a tough weekend, no matter what."

The Cardinals can't catch first-place Oswego and second-place Geneseo in the SUNYAC regular season standings. But, they can finish in third place and get a home game in the opening round of the conference playoffs.

But, both Buffalo State (9-10-3, 5-5-3) and Morrisville are just one point behind the Cardinals, with the Mustangs holding a game in hand. That makes tonight's game even more important.

"We don't need to put more pressure on these games," said Emery. "These aren't must-win games — I consider must-win games those you need to win in order to make the playoffs.

"But, these are big games."

The Cardinals are having trouble putting the puck in the back of the net, despite sometimes doubling their opponents in shots. And, that's why Emery is stressing defense and staying out of the penalty box this weekend.

"We have to take care of business one period at a time," he said. "We have been playing pretty well and the attitude has been fairly good most of the year.

"But, we have to focus on defense because we don't have goal scorers. And, we can't afford to take penalties."

Forward Patrick Jobb, who has been out with an injury, will be a welcome addition to the line-up this weekend. Jobb was one of the leading scorers on the team when he was sidelined.

"Jobb has looked good in practice — he has a good work ethic," said Emery.

"Everybody is healthy, but we will have players spread out over the two games sitting for disciplinary reasons."

Buffalo State played two road games last weekend — a 4-1 loss at Brockport and a tough 3-2 loss to Geneseo.

Senior forward Nick Petriello (8-19-27), sophomore forward Trevor McKinney (15-8-23) and sophomore forward Justin Knee (7-13-20) lead the Bengals in scoring, while freshman Kevin Carr (8-10-3, 2.82 gaa) has been the goalie in 21 of Buffalo State's 22 games thus far.

Fredonia (10-11-1, 5-7-1), meanwhile, dropped 2-1 contest at Geneseo and skated to a 2-all overtime tie at Brockport last weekend.

The Blue Devils, who seemingly always play the Cardinals tough at home, have some high scorers this season in junior forward Bryan Ross (12-25-37), senior forward Jordan Oye (16-20-36), senior forward Alex Morton (9-14-23) and senior defenseman Steve Rizer (1-22-23).

Two freshmen — Mark Friesen (5-7-1, 2.64 gaa) and Jeff Holloway (4-4-0, 3.33 gaa) — have done just about all of the goaltending for the Blue Devils.

The Cardinals skated to an earlier 4-2 win over Fredonia, a night after the loss to Buffalo State, on Nov. 20.

Plattsburgh State closes out its SUNYAC regular season schedule at home against Potsdam next Friday.

The Buff State hockey website has a link to a video feed. It will be good to watch the game. Go Cards!

Both games should be live via video......I've watched Fredonias video a few times....not the greatest, but hey...its free...see everyone there tonight!

Buffalo completes sweep of Cards - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/12/2011}

BUFFALO — The focus of the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team this weekend was to keep the puck out of its own net.

That, however, didn't happen Friday night.

Buffalo State scored four goals in the first 26:59 of the contest and held on for a 4-3 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference play, completing a regular season sweep of the Cardinals.

The loss dropped Plattsburgh State (15-7-1, 7-7-0) behind both Buffalo State and Morrisville, a 4-0 winner at Cortland, and into fifth place in the standings, just one point ahead of Fredonia, which routed Potsdam, 8-0, Friday night. The Cardinals are in Fredonia tonight.

"It's frustrating," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "It wasn't from a lack of leadership or hard work.

"But, we need to get better goaltending and get the saves when we need them. We have to keep the puck out of our own net. It wasn't just Josh (Leis) — we need to play better team defense."

The Bengals (10-10-3, 6-5-3) took one-goal leads three times in the first period on goals by Shane Avery, Trevor McKinney and Mac Balson.

Dylan Clarke and Kyle Kudroch scored power-play goals for Plattsburgh State in the opening period as the Cardinals trailed, 3-2, after one.

Anthony Orange's power-play goal gave the Bengals a 4-2 lead in the second and that was it for Leis, who stopped only seven of 11 shots. Ryan Williams took over and made five saves the rest of the way.

Clarke's power-play marker, his second goal of the game, then pulled Plattsburgh State back to within one with 5:09 left in the second.

But, that would be the final goal of the game as Buffalo State, which was outshot by a 28-16 margin, held off the Cardinals from that point on.

The Cardinals had their chances, going three-for-10 on the powerplay.

Plattsburgh State was not able to score, however, with the teams skating five-aside.

"We needed to be a sound defensive team tonight and we weren't," said Emery. "We had plenty of chances offensively — missing an open net at times.

"It's one of those frustrating games for the players. I was disappointed with some players, but we worked hard.

"We need to stay positive through this."

Kevin Carr stopped 25 of 28 shots in the Buffalo State nets.

Buffalo completes sweep of Cards - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/12/2011}

Fooled me at first - I was thinking when did I post this???

Random thoughts:

-Whoa, ten power play opportunities.
- Couldn't score while playing five aside.
- Leis remains inconsistent. Reminds me of Craig Neilson.
-Brockport beat Geneseo. Maybe all hope isn't lost?
- Anyone can beat anyone in the SUNYAC this year.
-If the playoffs started today, Plattsburgh would be on the road with the 5th seed.
-Williams plays the remainder of the game (35 minutes). "Team defense" allows only five shots during this span.
-Buffalo State's goalie (Carr) is only a Frosh. Yeah, he could be the next Cardinal killer. He's only going to get better.
-This team reminds me of 06-07 team. Yeah, goaltending was an issue then too.
-Good luck against Fredonia.

Who do you start tonight, Leis or Williams?

1. With 10 power plays, it sounds like they played well.
2. Again. With no 5-on-5 goals again, sounds like they didn't play well.
3. Great analogy. Makes me wonder if Leis and Williams were both recruited to be career backups. We weren't supposed to need a #1 for a couple of years...
4. All hope is lost. This team deserves to be in the NCAAs because they have proven they can play with the best of any conference (Norwich, Middlebury, Elmira). This team has no business in the NCAA because they can't even beat the teams in their own conference (Cortland, Buffalo x2, Morrisville). Talk about inconsistant....I've never seen a season play out (in any sport) the way this one has....
5. Except Oswego.... makes me think they're actually going to use the Pool C bid to get into the NCAAs. (Just kidding - I don't see anyone in this league beating them).
6. Considering their SUNY play, it's what they deserve.
7. They only allowed 11 shots in the first half of the game, that's not bad team defense either.
8. Plattsburgh has made a few other goaltenders look like Cardinal killers this year (see: Cortland, Morrisville).
9. I see your point, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a season play out like this one. Bizarre.
10. We'll see....
11. Leis. I still don't think Williams can lead this team anywhere over the long haul. Plattsburgh's only hope is that Leis gets it together and goes on a run like the Primelink or the Cardinal Classic....we've seen him do it.

We've seen him only allow two goals against some of the top teams in the country...like Norwich, Elmira, Geneseo, etc. And then we've seem him allow soft goals against middle-tier teams. Read about that inconsistency thing above.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Leis continued to give Buff State hope, that was the difference in the game. The first 3 Buff State goals were shots you have to save in this league, period. You can not let in 3 wrist shots from the circle 3 straight times. The 4th goal was not so much Leis's fault, but it was time for a change. Leis had just slipped and fallen on the ice, and you could tell he was just not in it. 2 of the first 3 goals were on neutral zone turn overs that lead to 2 on 1's or 1 on 1's, again sure its an odd man rush but either they were soft goals or Buffalo has several Russian snipers on their team. What hurt the most was the fact Plattsburgh was dominating 5 on 5, and then Boom....soft Buff State goal. Saying they didn't play well 5 on 5 would be very inaccurate of the game. There wasn't but maybe a 5 minute period of time where Plattsburgh wasn't in control. Even when Buffalo was on the power play, Plattsburgh still controlled play and/or limited Buff States chances. I can't remember but maybe 1 "good" save Leis stopped. Most of their shots came from the side or dump ins. Yes the defense had a few breakdowns, but any DIII goaltender should have stopped at least 2 if not 3 of those goals. Carr played well, but it was more of a lunch pail win for Buffalo. Plattsburgh was winning the 1 on 1 battles, except in front of the net. They packed it in and helped Carr out big time. He wasn't flashy, but made the saves he had to. Craig missed a wide open net late in the game, shot a backhand over the cross bar. I'm not sure how they have Plattsburgh with only 5 shots in the third. With that last PP it seemed the Cards had 5 shots alone in the last minute. Tough pill to swallow for sure, but this team has been road warriors before. With a lot of other top teams losing last night, Pool C is not out of the picture, but what the team does the next 2 games will show a lot. Tonights game is HUGE. The place will be packed as its Pink The Rink night, as if Fredonia needs to be even harder to play in. A loss is hard enough, but how you react to that loss is what makes a team. I am thinking we see Leis tonight still, but with a short leash. Just like the team, what Leis will show up.

There probably isnt a team outside the SUNYAC that wants to see Plattsburgh get that Pool C bid, not because they're not deserving but because they don't want to play them..

I didn't take it as a bash post....I thought you made good points and I gave my thoughts. Mine wasn't supposed to be a bash post either, but it's hard not to be critical of a team that is 7-0-1 out of conference against tougher competition than their league, where they are .500. Is this team frustrating or what?

That wont be a problem there is no way the Cards will get a bid....Only way Cards get in is win the Sunyac...Tough season :(

I'll be shocked if Plattsburgh is in any position to get in other than Pool A, but I await the next bracketology to see what the experts think....

Norwich beating Castleton couldn't have hurt, though...

If the season were to end today, be prepared to be shocked. It certainly helped that every other Pool C contender lost last night. That said, tonight's game is absolutely huge.

What many don't realize is that when discussing NCAA criteria, losses to teams such as Buffalo St. Cortland, Morrisville etc do not hurt you nearly as much as losing to say, Neumann, Norwich, or Manhattanville for example. This is going to give Plattsburgh an incredible boost in the record vs. ranked teams category. Is it fair? No, in fact I think it is completely flawed. But it is what it is and it is going to benefit Plattsburgh greatly this year. Will it be enough to get them a Pool C? We shall see. But make no mistake, they are most certainly in the discussion. Somehow.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

I don't believe Leis is a career backup, but the big issue with Leis is the shot from outside the circle. This has been consistent throughout Leis' college career. He makes big saves in close, on breakaway chances, very often. But those shots from outside the circles...if I were an opposing team, I wouldnt even try to set up a pass out in front; i'd blast shots from the point and a little bit closer in. A good example is the NCAA final four last year against Norwich when Cotnoir blasted that shot from the point with no one in front of him and it found the back of the net.

I think if ya look back at the past 3 or 4/5 games the PP has been the Offense, they have to pick it up even-up, they seem to get a lot of shots but quality man be the problem.....research done...in the past 5 games... 9 of platts last 14 goals have been on the PP, pretty hot on the PP but not hot on 5 on 5 ...bottom line for vs platts stay out of the box, should be a good game tonight in freddy and in Oz as well a lot on the line for many teams.....

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Just the fact we are still discussing Leis speaks volume at this point in the season. He is the best we have but that is where it ends , he is not capable of being the difference in a game ,period . He is just an average goalie at a very good Hockey Program . he will not be memorable ,nor missed , when his stint is over . As a matter of fact I think he will be best known as the guy who kept Clarke & Satim from the NCAA Tourney their senior year . Is this fair for me to say hell no its not fair but he is the one who hasnt stepped up and I hope something new is on the horizon.

My fear is that recruiting a goalie has not really proven to be Cardinal strength (of course an occasional exception). I remember wishing for a solid goalie more than I do, feeling we were set from the net out . Besides , who is in charge of goalie development at Plattsburgh ? Im still waiting .......right , ....there really hasnt been any measured improvement with Leis .

Plattsburgh tends to keep the oppositions shots down so stand on yourr head ,shot after shot acrobatics not an issue , just block the stuff you can see and for god sakes direct the puck to the corners. Soft goals kill you when you expend so much effort on team D that you cant score 5 on 5 even with a 2-1 shot advantage.

It wouldnt surprise me to see Plattsburgh lose an opening round SUNY Playoff game home or away!!!! I think Oswego knows we cant beat them so if we were to make it to a final in Oswego a 3 plus goal beating is just as likely. This team is not consistent and they dont take care of business ,why would we be expecting the miracle on ice ,it isnt going to happen

I will listen to tonight's game in Fredonia but I just dont care any more , our conference record is embarrassing. Im tired of hearing , great leadership , hard work and that it was ANOTHER frutrating loss. I remember when we had the talent that frustrated other teams .........maybe next season .....but we better have one hell of a recruiting class coming in because we could be sinking to the bottom of the conference if we dont!
