Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Good post. Only thing that might be up for debate on my end is the last statement.

Rubeniuek(SP?) from Geneseo, O'Neill from Potsdam, and Relkoff need mention in this list.

They all play for far inferior teams and have stolen some games or put up some decent stats with much worse defensive units in front of them.
Put them on Plattsburgh or Oswego and think of how good they could be...

I agree, take KGT off of a bottom feeder and put him on a top team and he is arguably the best goalie in the league (thank you Buff State;) . I am sure there are a couple of other guys in the SUNY that could step in and be a star between the pipes on Oswego or Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh State Cardinal Hockey '09-'10: "Acceptable Is a Good Word for It"
;)

For the Plattsburgh's final predominantly OPJHL rookie class (OJHL has been dissolved), they aren't doing to bad. 2009-10 has seen a lot of the Division III schools, but Plattsburgh also entered the year with only freshman goalies. Josh Leis (MWJHL) has seen his NCAA save percentage improve to .935 over his 2008-09 save % .912 while Ryan Williams has seen his go from .908 to .937, yah, that is acceptable.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Cardinals looking for revenge (Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 1/12/10)

Last season, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team lost only two regular season games.

One of them was a 5-3 loss at Skidmore College.

"No doubt, it's payback time for us," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We've already talked about it as a group. But, all it takes is one position — goaltending — to get hot.

"That's why we need to stay focused. We have to play our style of hockey and get the puck deep in their zone. But, at the same time, we have to keep the puck out of our net."

"The two goaltenders we faced in our last two games, (Norwich's Ryan) Klingensmith and Elmira's Casey (Tuttle) could be All-Americans," Emery said. "But, we need to start scoring some goals — our players have to stop squeezing their sticks so tight.

"We haven't been outplayed territorially this season, except for maybe the Norwich game. And, there was some talk concerning our goaltending going into the season. But, our goaltending has been nothing but great."

Skidmore is currently 5-7 overall and 4-3 in ECAC East play.
"I'm just happy last week is over," Emery said. "After the Williams game, and they have only one loss, we get back into our SUNYAC schedule for four games before going to Middlebury. It doesn't get any easier for us.

"But, we have to focus on the task at hand — and that's Skidmore."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Cardinals drub Skidmore (Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 1/13/10)

"Our goal was to get the puck down low," Emery said. "The (Kyle) Kudroch, (Jared) Docking, (Kyle) Taylor line got our cycling going early on and paved the way."

"That was a huge goal for us to go up, 2-1," Emery said. "I was happy with the way we came out to play."

"Skidmore played hard," Emery said. "But, their goalie let in a weak goal that made it 4-1 and they weren't the same team after that."

Back-up goaltender Raphy Rossi played the final 13:36 and allowed goals to Brendan Cottam and Sasha Thomas

"The only negative is that we had a couple of players leave Rossy out to dry on those two goals," Emery said.

"We need to go back to basics on our powerplay," Emery said.

"We had some guys get some confidence by scoring some goals tonight," Emery said.

"But, we're in the tough part of our schedule and we'll need to work hard and make sacrifices."

Is this Cardinal Player clubbing the goalie? ;)

"We need to go back to basics on our powerplay," Emery said.

Well it's nice to hear that. I know we're at 25.3% which is great but, in the last three games Plattsburgh State is 3 for 16 on the one man advantage. Those nine powerplay goals we scored in the Cardinal Classic boosted the ol' PP%..so it kinda fools people. Did anybody else think the boys looked kinda sluggish on the powerplay last night? I know they didn't score until their final chance. Otherwise, EXCELLENT showing from the Kudroch, Taylor, Docking line. Kuder scored the first two goals of the game (with the two assists from Docking). Also, nice to see Kyle VanDermale back in the lineup. He finished the night with a goal. Now it's off to Williams where (at the time of this post) they are currently 7-1-1 and is a perenial favorite (to knockout Middlebury) for the NESCAC crown.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Needs an overhaul. Offense in general puffed up by laugher games. The Power Play is too static no one moves and every coach in the league knows what they are going to do. The offense is ragged and most goals look like accidents instead of smooth plays. Some forwards seem to be tight and pressing. The defense and goaltending are solid, however, and that is what wins in the end. They need to take a step back and try some new ideas in the offensive zone. There are several different powerplays they could try. They might even try sticking a big defenseman in front of the net on the Power Play, I think size up front is a weakness and maybe a big guy like Adams could screen the Goalie and tie up defense .:) :)

Docking Nets SUNYAC Rookie Honors

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State's Jared Docking has been named the men's hockey rookie of the week by the State University of New York Athletic Conference, the league announced on Monday. It's the first time the freshman from Toronto, Ontario, has received the award and becomes the third Cardinals first-year player to earn the honor this season.

Docking had a Plattsburgh season-high four assists to help the Cardinals beat Skidmore, 9-3, in a non-conference game on Tuesday. The four points are the most scored by a Cardinal freshman in two seasons, and the four assists are the most in a game since Phil Farrow in a 9-2 win versus Brockport on Feb. 20, 2007.

Cards tie, scoring woes continue (Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 1/19/10)

Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery said his team did everything just about right, except put the puck in the net.

"It's frustrating," he said. "We played hard and we played well. We managed the puck well in our zone, except for the one mistake when they scored, and we played our style of hockey to a tee. We got the puck in deep and got our cycle going.

"But, we don't have a win to show for it."

"The game was allowed to be played like an old NHL game," Emery said. "Our players responded well, despite the atmosphere.

"But, we aren't putting the pucks away. We had plenty of chances tonight with loose pucks in front and open nets. We need to find a way to get the easy goals in tough places."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Some random thoughts after last night's frustrating tie...

Plattsburgh Scoring vs Top 15 Teams in the USCHO Poll (1/18/10)

11/07/09 vs #1 Oswego - 2 Goals - Result: Loss
11/27/09 vs #6 Middlebury - 3 Goals - Result: Win
11/28/09 at #2 Norwich - 1 Goal - Result: Tie
1/05/10 at #2 Norwich - 1 Goal - Result: Loss
1/09/10 at #4 Elmira - 1 Goal - Result: Tie
1/18/10 at #15 Williams - 1 Goal - Result: Tie

1-2-3 vs Top 15 Teams
1 Game at Home, 4 on the Road and 1 at a Neutral Site (Primelink).

Don't let the 4.56 GF fool you.

* Note in these six games against "ranked opponents" Plattsburgh has allowed a combine 13 Goals.

-We have one quality win against Middlebury at a Neutral site (3-1).

- This makes me kind of sad to say, but is Dylan Clarke only good when he is surrounded by talent? Dylan has had many a scoring chances throughout the course of the season..but he (like many other players looked upon to contribute: Farrow, Willock..etc) is not finishing.

- Same with Phil Farrow (read above)

- After last night's tie, Plattsburgh won't be able to win 20 games after regular season play.

- I am officially concerned more with us not being able to bury the biscuit as opposed to the performance of our Freshman goaltending. Like a pitcher in baseball..they are doing their job, how about some offensive support?

- Maybe someone more knowledgeable can answer this question for me. Where is Plattsburgh currently ranked in the East region? Third?

- With one hiccup (Tie or Loss) against another SUNYAC foe you can kiss the number one seed goodbye for March.

Let the discussion begin...

Regional rankings are not out yet.

Even with a W against the Lakers, they would need the Lakers to stumble elsewhere to have a shot at the #1 seed for the SUNYAC playoffs. The likelyhood of the Lakers stumbling three times the rest of the way out is pretty small, so Platty needs all 16 points in the remaining SUNYAC schedule to have a chance at it. Another SUNYAC final at the Stafford is the last thing I want to add to my travel plans!:)

The likelyhood of the Lakers stumbling three times

actually, twice would do it. as it sits, Plattsburgh has 13 while Oswego has 16. a loss to Plattsburgh would pull the Cards to within a point of Oswego. a tie against another team pulls them even and a loss puts Plattsburgh ahead, that is ofcourse if Plattsburgh wins out. should be an interesting second half of the season!

I know twice would do it, but I was trying to make the statement that it is pivatol for Platty to win out, because if they stumble once, then Oswego would have have to stumble three times for Platty to still have a shot at the #1 seed.

Additionally, simply tying the Lakers in the standings would still give Oswego the #1 seed barring a hell of a performance from Plattsburgh at the Campus Center. The Cards would have to at least match the 3-goal spread the Lakers laid on them at Stafford, or Oswego would still hold the tiebreaker. Of course, if Plattsburgh were to win by exactly three goals, things would get really interesting, as at that point (if both teams decided to play things out against the possibility that Oswego would, indeed, pick up an additional tie), the tiebreaker would fall to total conference goal differential, essentially providing a valid excuse for the teams to try and run it up as much as possible against the rest of the SUNYAC.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

For NCAA purposes, if Plattsburgh wants to be seeded hgher than Oswego, they're going to have to beat them twice. As it stands now, the cardinals would lose on win %, head to head, common opponents, and probably record against ranked opponents. Platty will probably win strength of schedule.

Two wins over Oswego would flip head to head and bring winning % very close. Otherwise Oswego probably locks up at worst the #3 seed in the east with another win over Plattsburgh.

Edit: assuming they hold serve against the rest of the suny competition.

I know I am new here, but based upon recent performances, shouldn't you be more worried about getting into the tournament instead of fantasizing about seedings???

Just askin'.....

Shy of too many more injuries, Plattsburgh will host a semi-final SUNYAC game (along with someone else), and will host the NCAA Championship regardless of their own participation. The Oswego game on the 30th is going to be great, the injuries add a reason for the rest team to step-it-up. Can Plattsburgh continue to make Oswego their home-away-from-home? We will know come the 31st. With the SUNYAC autobid, regardless, it wont be over before SUNYAC's. :D :)
