Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Scary part, they will continue to be....If you ask me the Freshman class of these three school have really set the bar higher for the rest of the league...

Oswego 12 Freshman, 4 Seniors
Norwich 12 Freshman, 7 Seniors
Plattsburgh 13 Freshman, 3 Seniors

Scary!

The line of Selleck-Fox-Lags...none are seniors:D

True, however, two of the above teams have Senior goalies (who won't "continue to be"), while one has only Freshman goalies. Just sayin....

Just as long as this season's freshman goalies don't follow in the footsteps of last season's sophomore goalie... :o

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Oswego's back up goalie is just as good. Beckwith only a soph and will fit in nicely next season. Was the starter at the beginning of this season until injury and is 4-1 I believe.

Beckwith as a freshman was:
Paul Beckwith 4-2-0 (.667 win %age - GAA 2.69 - Save% .870), but improved as a Sophmore YTD 5-1-0 (.833 win %age - GAA 2.01 - Save% .905)

For comparision (YTD), as freshman:
Ryan Williams 5-1-1 (.786 win %age - GAA 1.56 - Save% .937)
Josh Leis 4-1-1 (.750 win %age - GAA 1.65 - Save% .922)

Also -
Norwich's freshman Alex Dubois 1-0-1 (.750 win %age - GAA 2.2 - Save% .884)

Will Gosek take a page from Norwich and play Beckwith on Jan. 29?

Elmira another challenge for Cards (Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 1/9/10)

"Only time will tell about the Norwich game," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We knew that it was going to be tough to beat Norwich at their place.

"This is probably the toughest week of the season for us and we'll see how we bounce back. We'll know more about our team."

"Elmira is a great team," Emery said. "It would be a good win for us if we get one there.

"They (Elmira) will come to play — come right at us — and it should be an exciting game to watch."

"We're still a work in progress with all the freshmen we have," he said. "We have to look at the tapes of games, evaluate the team and try to improve. You can take more out of a loss in that respect.

"We do, however, need to get some of our guys who have of history of playing well to play better."

"We needed a mental health day off that had nothing to do with hockey," he said. "We had a great practice on Thursday and we're hoping for another great day of practice on Friday before we leave in the morning.

"We need to play hard against Elmira and get pucks to the net, something we didn't do against Norwich. Norwich's style of play is similar to ours and they're a difficult match-up for us."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

I like Emery's final quote because it reflects the same mentality that made Joey Wilson so critical to the team's success last year: specifically, on those handful of occasions when Plattsburgh's traditional approach of cycling their way into wide-open looks just isn't producing, don't be afraid to start taking lower-percentage shots and centering passes, and using the skill normally reserved for pretty passes to instead corral rebounds and direct the puck toward the net in traffic. As dazzling as the Cards can seem against most opponents, sometimes they just need to shft the gameplan a little to ensure they "get pucks to the net."

Wouldn't make any sense right now. Gunn-Taylor is undefeated, AND beat the Cards already this year. That weekend he was filling in for Beckwith who I believe had H1N1, and hasn't relinquished the starting role yet.

The 29th is the Potsdam game, NOT the Plattsburgh game - Norwich played their top goalie - Ryan Klingensmith against Plattsburgh. Gunn-Taylor will NOT be playing for Oswego next year, Beckwith might be, does it not make sense to look ahead and try to improve your future chances?

No, not when one loss can determine whether or not you have home ice advantage in the SUNYAC finals. If Gosek believes KGT gives his team the best chance to win, it makes absolutely no sense not to start him.

Its not as if Potsdam has no chance to win that game, they have already shown they can play with the best teams in the East on any given night.

Myself, I hope Beckwith doesn't see another game until this fall, but I also think if I were Gosek, I'd at least start Beckwith - if Beckwith is a team player, he would gladly return to the bench if Potsdam proved to be too much for him, and, it reduces the chances of something happening that might cause KGT not being in top form come the next night. But, I am hoping Beckwith's development is limited to watching from the bench.

I think it might be different if the gap between Platty and Oswego were not 3 points. The Potsdam game is every bit as important as the Platty game. If Oswego can manage to win all of their SUNY games leading up to Plattsburgh then there will be less pressure on the team. A loss to the Cardinals at that point would lessen the gap but Oswego would still have the #1 seed. I would much rather face Plattsburgh with a cushion rather than knowing if we were to lose, we could kiss home ice goodbye. Oswego has not fared well in winner-take-all games with the Cardinals:(

My bad, missed that part. Beckwith probably will get a shot that day. Gotta keep the rust off your goalies. He's gotten to play since the Plattsburgh weekend. I'm comfortable with him in net.

Cardinals tie Elmira (Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 1/10/10)

"We were able to get a point on the road," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "The feeling on the bus is not as good as a win, but this is a tough place for us to play and the outcome was acceptable.

"Accceptable is a good word for it. I looked at the schedule last summer and knew all along this was going to be a tough week on the road for us."

"When they went up, 1-0, we had two players who were selfish and didn't get off the ice on a change, which led to the goal," Emery said. "It's a good thing we didn't lose, 1-0, because of that."

"I felt Elmira had the better quality chances," Emery said. "Josh Leis played a great game in goal. Their goalie also played well. Territorially, I felt we had the better of play.

"It went back-and-forth, no doubt.

"It could have been worse today," Emery said. "But, starting Tuesday, we need to get back on the winning track."

Plattsburgh State Cardinal Hockey '09-'10: "Acceptable Is a Good Word for It"

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

I don't know if this is the best thread to put this on, but here goes:

At the end of Behind the Bench tonight the coach mentioned that some of the players would be at the free showing of the movie "Miracle" at the Plattsburgh Public Library this Thursday. He said there probably would be some details online or in the newspaper. Right now the only info. I've found are from these links:

http://www.plattsburghlib.org/Movies ... ibrary.pdf

http://www.pressrepublican.com/thursday ... 45755.html

If I find out anything else, I'll post it.

Here's the update taken from http://www.plattsburghlib.org/

Meet and Greet members of the Cardinals Men’s Hockey Team at PPL and see the movie “Miracle”: Plattsburgh Public Library will be hosting a meet and greet for several members of the Men’s Cardinal Hockey Team at 5:00pm on Thursday, January 14, 2010 in the upstairs auditorium. We will also be showing the movie “Miracle” at 6:00pm. Both of these events are part of the recognition that Plattsburgh Public Library is giving to the 30th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice” when the US Hockey team beat the Russians in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, NY. Popcorn and bottled water will be served. Both events are free and open to the general public. The movie showing is made possible in part from grants by the New York State Council on the Arts, Decentralization Program, administered locally by the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.

Norm and 93GreatLaker, My 2 cents.

I think if Gosek is going to give Beckwith any game before Plattsburgh, it would be the next one against Buffalo State as they are the only sub .500 team Oswego plays between now and Jan. 30. However, since the team is already going to have a 2 week break before playing again, I think Gosek may let KGT start the next 4.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see Beckwith against either Cortland or Morrisville in order to give KGT a blow before the stretch run into the playoffs. Gosek showed last year that he wants to ride the hot goalie, which KGT undoubtedly is. The Conn College game was more of a gift I'd say since the Camels were only sitting on 1 win and he wanted to get Beckwith some work as he will be the starter next year. He probably figured it was a gimmee, non-conference game.

As for Beckwith's stats, unfortunately he has just had some bad luck in his collegiate career thus far. He gets hurt last year coming into a game to replace Chris Hyk and pretty much loses his freshman year (also no thanks to Tim Potter getting hot and perhaps a little stubbornness on Gosek's part...?). This year he starts off pretty darn good then gets sick and what does his replacement do? He plays better than any goalie since Ryan Scott's junior year (championship).

I think you also have to take into account the fact that the team Leis and Williams have in front of them this year is markedly better than the team Beckwith had in front of him last year. I made the observation a bunch of times last year that Beckwith got left out to dry far too much and many of the goals were a direct result of awful defense, not bad play on his part.

Either way, I am of the humble opinion that the 4 best goalies in the SUNYAC are on the top two teams.

Good post. Only thing that might be up for debate on my end is the last statement.

Rubeniuek(SP?) from Geneseo, O'Neill from Potsdam, and Relkoff need mention in this list.

They all play for far inferior teams and have stolen some games or put up some decent stats with much worse defensive units in front of them.
Put them on Plattsburgh or Oswego and think of how good they could be...
