PC Police: A New Low

Re: PC Police: A New Low

Certain people are going to project an air of prejudice when they say something like that. Not saying it's right nor that's not reverse in nature, but it's the climate we're in right now and someone in his position has to know better.

Again, not saying it WASN'T a stupid tweet, but the reaction is much worse than the tweet itself. It's embarrassing.

No need to be PC here...just say white republicans.

Re: PC Police: A New Low

Al Jazeera. All you have to know. They are coming in assuming an air of legitimacy as "reporters," but are really just 5hit-stirrers to get Americans riled up against each other.

Al Jazeera is actually a pretty unbiased news source on most topics - at least in its English version. Besides, the same story could be found on a number of different sites, I just chose that one.

I won't be going to the terrorist's mouthpiece for my news anytime soon.

Re: PC Police: A New Low

So the main stream media, CNN, MSDNC are all puppets of the Democrats, Fox is a Republican shill, but Al Jazeera is playing it straight? Really?? They don't have a dog in the hunt?

Re: PC Police: A New Low

I think there probably is some government influence on them, probably more so in their programming originating outside of America, but I don't think their goal is to get "Americans riled up against each other"

I think they are a legitimate news source, aren't overly inflammatory, and don't seem to waste time on crap like Justin Beiber

Re: PC Police: A New Low

Antipoverty assistance can often create incentives not to work and to stay where you are, that's not what we want in society. . . . There are a lot of people slipping through the cracks in America that are not reaching their potential ... We have got this tailspin of culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value and the culture of work, so there's a cultural problem that has to be dealt with.

When Bill Cosby says this, people squirm uncomfortably, because the evidence is obvious yet no one wants to admit it.

If a white man -- any white man -- says exactly the same thing, he is shouted down as a 'racist.'

Don't the same words have the same meaning no matter who says them?? I guess not.... :(

"We know young black men are twice as likely as young white men to be 'disconnected'—not in school, not working. We've got to reconnect them. We've got to give more of these young men access to mentors. We've got to continue to encourage responsible fatherhood. We've got to provide more pathways to apply to college or find a job. We can keep them from falling through the cracks."

Guess who said the last quote.....yup, it was Barack Obama.

What am I missing? how is the first quote 'racist' but the second quote is not 'racist' when both speakers are saying exactly the same thing!!

Al Jazeera English is decent- it actually shows real news. I'd watch that over CNN or the crap that passes for network news any day of the week.

Edit: I also like how you implicitly exclude Fox News from the mainstream media, as though it isn't a part of a major media mogul's empire.

Re: PC Police: A New Low

This sounds like something out of The Onion, but incredibly it is real life brainwashing at its worst.

Oberlin College earlier this year proposed that its teachers "be aware of racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, cissexism, ableism, and other issues of privilege and oppression."

w.t.f are "cissexism" and "ableism"?? :(

The writer of the quoted sentence is obviously totally oblivious to its inherent irony: that guidance sounds far more oppressive than any of the "-isms" cited!

I had to look up the cissexism. Ableism is discrimination against the gimps.

Wikipedia said:
The related term cissexism, which is sometimes used as a synonym of transphobia, refers to the assumptions that due to human sexual differentiation one's gender as either a man or a woman is determined solely by a "biological" sex of male or female respectively, and that trans people are inferior to cis people. Whether intentional or not, both transphobia and cissexism have severe consequences for the target of the negative attitude. Many trans people also experience homophobia and heterosexism from people who associate their gender identity with homosexuality, or because they also have a non-heterosexual sexual orientation. Attacking someone on the basis of a perception of their gender identity rather than a perception of their sexual orientation is known as "trans bashing", as opposed to "gay bashing". Homophobia and transphobia are correlated.[

I am feeling more and more that the most insidious discrimination we all face is that people who think independently are the most oppressed of all. We are all supposed to genuflect and shout Hosannah! and follow the party line without question or else we are evil. :(

I won't be shouting Hosannah anytime soon. I have no idea what it even means. And these pressures have been put in place upon society ever since societies began. Witch trials, excommunications, and many other versions that don't come to mind immediately. This group-think mentality is nothing new except now it's moved from the ignorant to the supposed intellectuals, which I find to be really scary.

Subscribed because I think my computer has a virus and I... oh wait, not that kind of PC

Re: PC Police: A New Low

I was thinking a little more about that quote from Oberlin College about "issues of privilege and oppression."

A college talking about "issues of privilege" totally oblivious to the irony involved? who'd a thunk it?

I suppose that they are unaware that they discriminate against stupid people? don't they typically require a minimum SAT score, a minimum GPA, and an essay from applicants before they can be admitted? Don't they grade their students?

I remember a story about a college professor who told all the A students in his class that he was lowering their grades to a B so that he could thereby raise the grades of all the C students to a B as well. You can imagine how well that went over!

What I find most annoying about hypocrites is when they cannot even recognize their own hypocrisy.

PS. Is it now unacceptable to call people of below-median intelligence "stupid"? what is now the proper phrase? "BMI" already stands for Body Mass Index, so we can't use that....

I remember that urban legend too. I guffawed and then rolleyed my eyes at my Godfather for forwarding yet another chain e-mail.

The sad part is you probably think it really happened.

That isn't unfair discrimination, that's making sure you have the basic educational background necessary to succeed in the college classroom. By your logic, employers who require candidates for an open position to have a bachelor's degree and/or 10 years of experience are also "discriminating".

Until you're 18, your parents have a responsibility to properly educate and prepare you to contribute to society. Once you turn 18, that responsibility becomes yours. However, you don't have a choice regarding the color of your skin, any disabilities, sexual orientation, etc.
