PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Does PC have any home radio broadcasts of the games that you don't have to pay for on the athletics website? USCHO still lists them The Score as radio coverage but to my recollection they changed formats back in 2008.

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Here is what I posted in the game thread.

PC looked decent tonight...Derek Army had a good game.

It was a decent game tonight by both squads but the refs were not letting them play with tons of interferences and all around borderline calls. One ref called a hitting from behind in the middle of the ice that a Northeastern player slid into the boards.

Cronin all night was able to get away with "late" changes and eventually led to Army picking up a bench minor. The next stoppage again Cronin had a late change and finally got called for a Delay of Game.

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Also, forgot to add that the refs missed PC's second goal as the light went off from the goal judge but play continued for over a minute until it was stopped. They reviewed the play and it was a goal. Replay actually works in college hockey

Defintely agree on the refs not letting them play. Flow was just not there and the game dragged. Throw on top of that we had one of our traditional Boston teams arriving late 30 minute delay the beginning of the game starts.

I actualy thought PC was a little slow (maybe NU is just faster). Could of course be this was the first trial run to workout the kinks. We shall see. I am sure though that we do not do things on the ice fast enough. Find the open man, move the puck on the power play, clear the puck on defense etc., all things that if we don't find that speed will kill us as the year progresses.

Beaudry had one sequence where he had to be sharp, but was not really tested. The two goals he gave up were down low and scrambles on an NU powerplay, the other with the extra attacker on for NU. Again another issue to concern yourself with that when a team get aggressive in the goal we fall back. Worse the 2 goals were with veteran defensemen on the ice. My first thought is they really miss Mark Fayne. He was an established presence in front of the net and on the power play he could move the puck quicker from the point then those who manned it last night.

Of the defense Velischek look the most improved, he looks stronger and played so and seemed to come away with the puck in his one on one battles. The one who looked most similar to his past is Baier. Has some offensive skills but is way too slow with his decisiions.

Offensively the team more resembled the first couple of Army teams, where they put the shots on net but did not make them into real testers. We had several chance to get off good shots and we either missed the trailer if we passed, did not see him and took a bad angle shot or simply took a shot that was cake for the goalie to handle. Clearly our guys are not goal scorers. For instance Schaller got himself into position to get great shots and really did not put testers on net a couple of times.

On the other hand nice to see 3 seniors not known for being scorers get the goals and Kremyr's and Farrer's goals were well done. It looked like to match Army spread the lines thinner then he'd like really dropping Schaller to the checking line and attempting to show some balance. He really did not run a short bench either. Obviously the amount of special team play required certain players to get more time but he seemed to go with his four lines till you got to the point where you wanted your best players on the ice at the end. Still NU seemed to cover MacKinnon and Bergland well and shut them down and really without a 2nd threat it does not give us mathcing top 2 lines against most teams. Cross is agile, didn't see the ability to get shots, looked more like a creater last night. He did get a little less time then I'd like since he didn't PK and was not part of the top PP unit. Thought he looked a little smaller then he's listed at. Maybe it is an adjustment period. Army actually looked better then Cross, then again maybe it is an environment he is more us to. He looked bigger then he is listed and he would not give when it came to the physical play. He had a couple of in close chances but you are not going to push the puck often past a goalie in this league you have to shot it. The player I thought looked most improved was Chris Rooney. He was buzzing around created a bit of offense for his line. The only negative is they were the line on the ice for the NU extra attacker goal.

As far a Germain's goal it might by and large be the closer thing to something the refs did right last night. Assuming you can excuse the ref not being in position to see the puck slip under the net as a NU dman tried to tip it over. They got it right. The ref seemed to acknowledge from the time the light went on he was going to review. The rules call for play to continue if there is no stoppage and it did till Beaudry smothered the puck probably over a minute later. They overturned their decision, which considering what shot they have might be difficult, but they must have clearly discerned it going underneath. The biggest issue most likely was figuring how much time to go back on the clock. Might have been easier if this had been a Cox game.

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Off to a good start of would seem.

Let's see how they do in Duluth. PC isn't exactly world beaters out on the road against WCHA teams (well, not since MSUM).
Although, really: we end up in Denver's tournament, Wisconsin's tournament, Minnesota's tournament, and some fun road trips to SCSU when they were really good. For fairness sake, we should really go up to Anchorage or Houghton one of these years.

Derek actually looked pretty good. He didn't look out of place at all. He had an assist on the second goal.

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Friars vs. Bears in St. Paul for the national title. You heard it hear first...;)

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Perspective.......

We're 9/10 away from being as good as we were last year. :)

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

the pc men's hockey poster (the one distributed at the games that has the schedule) has boston university spelled wrong at one point...*facepalm*
EDIT: two points.

I may have had one to many up in friends of friars, but i thought we played a pretty solid game. We had a few good looking 3 on 2's where the passing was excellent, and on the other end of things our D broke down a couple of breaks in our zone. I was shocked to see army out there so often, but aside from being smaller than I imagined, he held his own. The thing that most impressed me was the student section. What was the deal with that? I know the student crowds are generally bigger in the beginning of the season, not knowing the eventual pain they are in for, but that was unbelievable. Add into the equation that it was columbus day weekend and for most kids it was the first weekend they could go home...wow. I forgot how much fun it was to watch the team win and have a decent crowd in attendance. Makes the trip back to boston that much easier.

They did play well and were the better team. I was amazed to see PC have so many kids on their roster. They are carrying 6 full lines of F's where BC for example only carries 4. PC has good depth at that spot as a couple kids in stands are very good players. Should make for some healthy competition.

There's a student organization called the Friar Faithful that's been working to drum up fan support for all athletics. They really pushed hockey on students, and they turned out in droves. The freshman class in particular. I really hope the crowd keeps up like that.

Would be nice to have that happen. The typical PC student pattern is to show up in droves during the first few games of the year, then disappear never to come back. Was like that for many, many years.

Re: PC hockey offseason and TOURNAMENT MODE!

Great, the best student turnout in years and I missed it? Awesome.

HM2000 is right: the turnout tends to go downhill. Here's hoping the team gives them a reason.
