Patty Kazmaier 2025

Timothy A

Let's go RED!
Well, does O'Brien get it THIS year? Edwards is 6 pts back and Simms is 12 back, but unless one of them blows O'Brien away, I think the Grad student has the edge over the Jr's. Murphy is 15 pts back having played 2 less games. She plays St. Cloud this week, so she probably won't rack up enough to get the gap to single digits with 2 regular season games to play. The closest eastern players are 19 and 22 pts back. That's a mega gap. There isn't a goalie head and shoulders above the others, I can't see it going to a G.

Who ya thinking?

I’ll be honest with you…I believe a Wisconsin player gets it, but not one that you mentioned. For me, it’s Caroline Harvey. It could be my bias toward D-men showing, but the handful of times I’ve watched the Badgers this year I’ve thought that she was far and away the best player on the ice. 49 points from the blue line and outstanding play in all three zones.

I can't argue with that. I've never seen a defenseman like her before I don't think I ever will again. The only thing I can say is don't they tend to give it to graduating players and not underclassmen?

I would love to see Casey O'brien get this well deserved award.

Somebody from MadTown. I think you have to look past the numbers to a certain extent. E.g., O'Brien has 66 pts in 32 games for 2.06 pts/gm, but 20 of those came in the six games against MJ's cupcake NCs, for 3.33 pts/gm. In the other games, she's at 46 in 26, or 1.77 pts/gm. Still great, but not at a level all her own. Most likely it'll be her or Harvey, in any case.

Last weekend she averaged 3.5 pts per game against the #3 team in the country.

The last time a Patty Kaz winner was on the team that won the national championship was 2014, Jamie Lee Rattrey, Clarkson.

Like all other such streaks, this one will continue right up until it ends.

But still... just sayin'... :)

Allow me to be the first to congratulate [Janecke/Harvey/Edwards/Dunne] on this highly esteemed and well earned honor. While things might not have gone the way the [Lions/Badgers/Buckeyes] were hoping to end, still a very magical season for the team. They should be very proud!

No love lost between those two. When they have offsetting penalties they are constantly yapping at each other from their respective boxes. It will be interesting to see what happens after college if they end up playing on the same team somewhere.

Yeah I saw the coincidental penalty between the two yesterday and quite honestly I didn't think Murphy deserved two on that.

Not that I think it comes down to this, but the Kaz voters should definitely take Murphy's penalties into account. I mean, what is her "plus/minus" on total goals scored vs goals given up while sitting in the penalty box? Have there been a half-dozen goals scored on her penalties? More?

Contrast that, for example, with O'Brien taking her FIRST penalty of the year last weekend vs Bemidji. (UW killed the penalty, of course.)

(as for yesterday and the minors with Dunne, as is so often the case, what I saw is Murphy instigate with an after-the-whistle "bump" of another OSU player that Dunne took exception to. If Dunne hadn't retaliated, OSU probably gets a power play.)

My money is on O'Brian
I think that voters, at least subconsciously, tend to think, "Harvey can win next year." However, next year being an Olympic year without centralization complicates that. What if Harvey gets injured or just worn out at the Olympics and doesn't maintain her usual level? For that reason, if I was voting, I would pick between Harvey and O'Brien and take the one that I thought had the better season, period. I don't really think anyone else is in the running.

When I said O'Brian it was based on her on ice performance, I know nothing about the candidate's off ice character and community service, the things besides hockey the Patty Kaz people look at.

To button things up - and knowing what I was likely to find - I took a look at the 'personal' parts of her UW biography page:

WCHA All-Academic Team (2022-23, 2023-24) ... earned high distinction and high honors academically in high school … coached Faribault's youth kids, tutored underprivileged students in elementary and middle school (Boston) and managed Shattuck hockey's social media ...

Yeah, O'B is gonna win it.
