Patty Kazmaier 2024

The last Patty Kaz winner whose team didn't make the Frozen Four was Daryl Watts in 2018, and the last winner whose team didn't make the tournament at all was Brooke Whitney for Northeastern in 2002 when the tournament only had four teams.

In 2018, Wisconsin lost to Colgate in the National semifinal, and Colgate then lost to Clarkson in the final.

One issue with freshmen winning the Kaz is that there is little to go on for criteria like scholastic achievement and civic involvement. Likely true for leadership as well, although there we can resort to the "she leads by example" cliche.

I listen to the Patty Katz podcasts about the Patty Katz and it was quite fascinating to have hear them talk about the fact that even though off-ice things are taken supposedly into consideration, apparently there's no systematic way to share this information with all the voters. They certainly made it seem like when they vote they have no idea what the players are doing off ice.

At least when I voted, we were provided with majors, GPAs, and a list of charitable causes. I've seen that shown for the 10 finalists for other years as well. Although, I can't speak to this Katz award that you reference.

Haha, maybe there's an award named after Big 10 basketball reporter Andy Katz or, perhaps, former tOSU linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer. :D

I was on the treadmill, cut me some slack lol.

I hope they still do that in some form. Maybe Todd and Nicole expect more?

When does the voting close?

I think that Nicole Haase said that the voting (on the top 10) was closing Friday March 1 and that the top 10, and Goaltender of the Year finalists also, would be released this Thursday.

The Patty Kazmaier top 10 players have been announced: Patty Kaz story. Caroline Harvey is the one defender, and Gwyneth Philips the one goaltender included. The story includes a short profile of each player.

Listicles attract so much attention. This is the opinion of people that apparently includes some that post on random message boards. Lots get made about it. Probably less should. And it mostly seems like a list of very good players. But I thought it was interesting the #1 and 2 players in +/- in the nation (admittedly a flawed stat, but pretty reasonable to identify exceptional players when they are outliers to the upside) were left off. Both pass the eye test to me. And one is from the clear best team in the nation who had no players so honored. The other was from a team that had three honorees, and to my mind this one was a if not the key offensive cog to their success - more so than any of the other three. Anyway, hat tip to Curl and Barnes who would have made my list (solely based on their play - not sure if there are off ice issues that were strikes against them).
