Patty Kazmaier 2024

Timothy A

Let's go RED!
I was looking at the stats for the season for goalies to see if any might get a look for the award and I was shocked to see split time goaltending is dominating women's hockey this year. Only 2 goalies in the top 10 have played the majority of games, NE's Philips and Clarkson's Pasiechnyk (and 4 out of the top 20). The depth of quality goaltending in the women's game is at an all time high. I would assume Daniel, Serdachny or Kaltounkova are the odds on favorites as they are upper classmen and Simms is only a So. O'Brien could jump into the fray as an upperclassmen, being only 4 pts out of the lead. The best D is 14th in points, so no high flying D will win it this year. I would have bet money that KK would of been a finalist but she's lost too many games to injury to make a case for her. She is the most dynamic player on WI's roster, and probably in the WCHA with Murphy being #2.

Simms rockets to 4 point lead in national scoring and O'Brien is up to second after the Bemidji cupcake feast.

Whatever is going on with Kaltounkova (unless some family emergency) I doubt she makes the final 10. If she did, I wonder if it can be revealed to the voters what the issue is as the Kaz is not only hockey but what happens in school and their commitment to community. If it is a private matter that will not be revealed, then I as a voter could not vote for her as great a hockey player she is and her accomplishment in school and community. Just one opinon.

So you can't vote for her based on what you read on this forum? That would be unfortunate and unfair to her. If what happens in school is really a factor then a lot of players should be disqualified. Don't believe the window dressing PR stuff.

Not enough points ...
That's using elementary math alone, and not using even that particularly well. She's 7th in the country in PPG, and has scored more goals than anyone else in the country. If we're talking top 10 for the Kaz ...

She should have more assists? It's not because she doesn't try, but this year's UM doesn't have another Murphy when it comes to finishing. Heise, G. Zumwinkle, and Boreen were the other Gophers who could bury the puck last year, and they're all playing for the Minnesota PWHL team now. Your assists go begging when teammates don't score.

Wisconsin has four players who have at least 45 points. That helps several ways. UW's top forwards have someone on their line with similar offensive skill. Because the talent extends beyond one line, the best players aren't always facing the top D pair and best defensive forwards of opponents. Then there's UW's love of cupcakes. None of your six NC games were against teams that rank in the top half defensively in GA/Game. Lots of sugar in that diet. By comparison, the Gophers OOC schedule, while nothing to write home about, isn't defensively challenged to the same degree.

Maybe she's an absolute saint for causes outside of the rink that could save her?
She irritates a certain Badger fan to no end, and it's hard to put a true value on that.

She's a top 10, no question. And she scares the crap out of me this upcoming weekend.

They tried to schedule a tough team from Hockey Easy but UW can't help BC tanked.

That one year they lost to WI 1-0 in the semi's, but that is ancient history.

2017, Mellissa Channell, a shot from the top of the faceoff circle. I knew it was 'under 30 seconds to play', but officially it came with 17 seconds to go before overtime.

Sigh, 2017, "the one that got away..."

Timothy if you're not familiar with the goalie's splitting time, you're not listening to our podcast ;)

Full disclosure, I'm on the Patty committee this year. We have done no voting yet. These are just the things running through my head as I try to figure out who I want to vote for.

If the criteria is most valuable player, that's Murphy hands down imo. That team is in a world of hurt if she's not playing the way she is. I will be very interested to see how folks outside the WCHA view her and how much the major penalties, embellishments and fighting play into how folks feel about her. But there is no one player in the country more important to her team/the team's success than Abbey Murphy.

I think the dark horse right now is SLU's Abby Hustler, who has 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points (of a total of 49 for the season) over the 13 games since the winter break. She's been extra special in the biggest situations, including 7 goals and 3 assists over the last three weeks against all the other ranked ECAC teams.

There is a bigger point gap between Izzy Daniel and the next leading scorer on the Cornell team than there is between Murphy and Bouveng. Plus, Daniel is both considered an exceptional person within their team and the league and… not Murphy.

Valid - and she's definitely on my watch list. To be a slight devil's advocate, I'd argue Cornell also has Bergmann, so Daniel isn't fully on an island. But I take your point

Speaking of point gaps, you have players like Tessa Janecke at Penn State with substantially more points than the next closest and Elle Hartje at Yale. I certainly wouldn't say Murphy is on an island with the talent surrounding her in the same way as other players. And Elle Hartje just won the ECAC Mandi Schwartz award so strong character. Outside of the WCHA, you have a lot of players who have to carry a larger load and find ways to deliver even when other teams can just target one player or one line. Hustler is having an unbelievable year, but she does have Gosling and Segedi also having strong years.

Murphy has to play 4 games against #1 OSU, 4 games against #2 Wisconsin, 4 games against #9 UMD and 4 games against #10 Saint Cloud. Not including the WCHA playoffs. Murphy is putting up her numbers against the best weekend and week out. The others rarely have to be tested. That being said...the Patty is not just about stats but about the overall athlete. The on ice performance, locker room and off ice achievements.

No I have not had time to listen. It's #1 on my list of ones I'd like to listen too, but alas there are only so many hours in the day. It was just a shock to see so many teams split timing.

I was on the web booking a hotel in St. Louis before the puck was dropped at the next faceoff. I would contend that it didn't get away, I'd say UW never had their hands on it in that game. Clarkson allowed UW very few quality chances. You just felt like they were playing with 4 skaters the whole game.
