Patty Kaz 2014 Thread

Re: Patty Kaz 2014 Thread

Did some quick stats of the comparison of Rigsby and Maschmeyer:

Both goalies have played 5 ranked teams -

Harvard has played Quinnipiac W 4 - 2
Clarkson W 2 - 0
Cornell T 3 - 3
BU W 3 - 1
BC T 1 - 1

Wisconsin has played Minn L 1 - 2
Minn L 0 - 2
BU W 5 - 0
UND T 0 - 0
UND W 3 - 1

Overall:

Maschmeyer had 175 shots on (averaged 35 shots/gm vs ranked teams), where the opposition goalies (Laden/Howe/Sperry/Slebodnick/Boyles) had 128 shots on (averaging 26 shots/gm). Net out come is 3 wins, 2 ties for Maschmeyer with save % of 96% while the opposition goalies had 3 losses and 2 ties (with a save % of 90 %). All games Maschmeyer was outshot (21/18 W, 36/19 T, 31/23 W, 35/32 W, 52/36 T) So based on just shots Maschmeyer had 3 wins 2 ties while being outshot in all games.

Rigsby had 130 shots on (averaged 26 shots/gm vs ranked teams), where the opposition goalies (Leveille/Leveille/Sperry/Benzie/Shaw) had 142 shots on(averaging 28.4 shots/game). Net outcome is 2 wins, 2 losses, 1 tie for Rigsby with a save % of 96% while the opposition goalies had the same but opposite record (with a save % of 94%). Rigsby's team outshot the opposition 3 times and lost twice (35/23 L, 27/33 L, 34/19 W, 21/34 T, 25/21 W), and was outshot twice with the outcome of a loss and a tie.

If the battle is on difference making: Maschmeyer 5 - Rigsby - 1.

Maschmeyer has never been out battled by a ranked opposition goalie this year,

Rigsby has been out battled by 2 goalies (Leveille twice, did and should have beat Sperry, out battled Benzie, and was on par to beat Shaw)

Just stats, but it would have been good to see Harvard and Wisco play each other this year and put the goalies to the test.

In response to ARM (re Howe)

Howe had 112 shots on (averaged 22.4 shots/gm vs ranked teams), where the opposition goalies (Slebonick/Maschmeyer/Laden/Benzie/Shaw) had 147 shots on (averaging 29.4 shots/game). Net outcome is 2 wins and 3 losses for Howe with a save % of 90% while the opposition goalies had the opposite records for wins and losses (with a save % of 94%). Clarkson outshot the opposition in all games except for the fifth, and lost 3 of the 4 games they outshot the opposition (41/24 L, 36/19 L 26/23 W, 27/20 L, 17/26 W), the one game Clarkson was out shot - Clarkson won (UND).

Howe out battled Laden and Shaw, and was out battled by Slebodnick, Maschmeyer and Benzie.

Howe was a difference maker in the 2nd game against UND, and maybe (didn't see the game) a negative difference maker vs Cornell in the 6 - 3 loss, might be argued that she was also a difference maker vs Quinnipiac since shots were similar 26/23 with Clarkson winning 3 - 0.

So probably I would give Howe 2 difference maker games positively and 1 difference maker game negatively. With 2 games as neutral.

On a different note: After reviewing a bunch of goalie stats other areas came out, namely that certain teams have got development plans in place, Wisco with Rigsby as a Sr has been developing Desbien (a Fr), Harvard with Maschmeyer as a So is developing Laing (a Fr), Clarkson has played Howe (a Sr) almost all of the games with no real backup (maybe a great recruit coming in?), Cornell has played Slebodnick (a Sr) almost all of the time, UND splits games between Benzie and Shaw recently against most opposition (overall Benzie (a So) has played 11 games with Shaw (a Fr) playing 6 games). Interestingly against ranked teams recently (Wisco and Clarkson - Benzie and Shaw both got a game in each series). Quinnipiac has Laden (a Jr) so not under the gun yet, but she plays most of the games (I think she had an injury recently but they played weaker competition while she was out and Q prevailed).

Definitely these teams have different succession plans, with UND being the most balanced followed by Wisco and Harvard, and leaves one wondering what the plan is for Clarkson and Cornell. I'm sure the coaches in each program have a plan, just wondering. And sometimes someone just steps up when the Sr goalie leaves, in the example of Quinnipiac where Vigilante played almost all of the games since her arrival at Quinnipiac, and this year Laden stepped in and stepped up, so sometime it just works out.

This last point probably belongs in a different thread - Succession Planning, as I noticed in many of the threads that contributors speak to development and use of the bench.

Re: Patty Kaz 2014 Thread

Also,

Wisco has 4 remaining ranked opponent games (Minn/Minn/UND/UND)

Clarkson has 3 remaining ranked opponent games (Cornell/Quinnipiac/Harvard)

Harvard has 4 remaining ranked opponent games (Cornell/Quinnipiac/(BC or BU - Beanpot)/Clarkson)

So all goalies will be tested again, and time tells.

Re: Patty Kaz 2014 Thread

On a slightly different note:

Last year if memory serves me right, of the final 10 in the Patty Kaz only 1 was a Canadian. After looking at more stats, 11 of the top 15 scorers are Canadian, 2 of the top scoring D are, and 2 of the 3 goalies mentioned in this thread are as well. It will be a much tighter race this year since no 1 or 2 players are running away with the scoring title. Parity is probably more prevalent than ever. Can anyone give what they think are the criteria which the Patty Kaz is based and who decides. On the way outside looking in.

Re: Patty Kaz 2014 Thread

After checking the Hobey Baker award, many of the recipients had average or no NHL career after school, the most notable success story was Paul Kariya. But many fisseled.

Probably not the case in women's hockey, but I found it interesting that winning the Hobey Baker was not a sure sign of continued on ice success.

Re: Patty Kaz 2014 Thread

I found the answer after checking out 14/15 Commitment thread - Shea Tiley (U - 18's Can) is coming to Clarkson next year. So she probably gets the reigns off the start as Howe's replacement.

The higherr than normal Canadian content this year is driven partly by the Olympic year. There are only two current NCAA College Eligible Canucks on Team Canada's roster. Not sure the exact number for the US sqaud, but pretty sure it is higher. You can fairly safely assume that most of those players would be in the PK conversation if they were playing NCAA this year.

There are many examples of PK winners excelling at the National level. Only a very few do not star on their National squad. Last one that would fall in that category would be Bauer, the 06 winner.

The biggest reason why HB winners do not go on to star in the NHL is where the best play. Most top 19-22 year old's on the men's side play pro rather than college, while pretty much 100% of the top female players play college, the vast majority of them in the NCAA.

 ....That is a loaded assumption to make... :( .....Do not agree, neither with that comment nor with that observation..

Just seems to be an apparent correlation between it being a USA Hockey award and the lack of European winners. IMO Minnesota would still have won the national championship last year without Kessel, but not without Räty, but that's just one person's opinion.

The award seems to have favored North Americans, but is that in part because it favors forwards? IMO, the Europeans who were most deserving were Kim Martin in 2008 and Räty last year. Martin was hurt by the Gavrilova uncertainty. Räty was hurt by the perception of people that didn't watch the Gophers that she didn't have to do anything because the team in front of her was so strong, when in reality, she was a big reason why the team was so strong. I just felt like if her year wasn't enough, then what does a goalie have to do to win the award? As for whether it would have helped her cause to have been from the U.S. or Canada, that probably varies by what is in the mind of each voter.

On the other hand, Räty would have been the third choice on my ballot. I thought Bozek was the most valuable player on the Gophers last year.

Also feel like Rooth should be on that list too, and her being a forward maybe makes her the most deserving European for it.

My thought's exactly.

Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread. Back to discussing this year's potential candidates. Rigsby definitely deserves to be in the top 3. I'm not too familiar with any of the players out east, but would Babstock or Lefort to be in discussion?

I think Lefort is certainly making a case. When she scores it usually isn't some dirty area type of "garbage" goal. Usually she powers past someone and rips off a snipe, or makes a slick deke and tucks it home.

Babstock for sure as one of the strong candidates from the ECAC. She has been one of those players that made a huge difference for her team not only this year, but during her whole career.

the Kaz isn't an award for the best player, or the most valuable ...or so says the website

MVP = Raty (based on WCHA & NCAA tournament play
Best = Kessel
Kaz winner = Bozek

or at least that was my opinion
