2 (56) Shane Vereen, RB California
3 (73) Stevan Ridley, RB LSU
3 (74) Ryan Mallett, QB Arkansas
3 (92)
4 (125)
5 (138)
5 (159)
6 (193)

Re: Pats' Offseason: At Least The Jets Lost . . . ?

New England trades 92 (third) and 125 (fourth) to Oakland for 219 (seventh) and Oakland's second-rounder in 2012.

This move makes sense to me. But I just don't see how Belichick has improved the team in this draft. Despite having all these picks people have been talking about for months, through two days we have a raw tackle, an injury-prone corner, two running backs, and a backup quarterback with a drug problem.

1 (17) Nate Solder, T Colorado
2 (33) Ras-I Dowling, CB Virginia
2 (56) Shane Vereen, RB California
3 (73) Stevan Ridley, RB LSU
3 (74) Ryan Mallett, QB Arkansas
5 (138)
5 (159)
6 (193)
7 (219)

2012 picks:
1
1 (NO)
2
2 (OAK)
3
4
5

I was anti-McCourty last year, so I may be way off base again. But I'm seeing everyone tweeting "Pats have two firsts and two seconds next year -- the rich get richer!" Um, everyone said that this year -- how rich did NE get? Do they look closer to a Super Bowl now than they did Thursday afternooon? I dunno, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Still no D linemen, I hope they're planning on free agency

That must be the plan, at least I hope it is. They have quantity there but not much quality (and even the quality has serious question marks): behind Wilfork they have Warren (coming off surgery), Wright (missed end of year with concussion aftereffects), Brace (hasn't lived up to expectations yet), Stroud (cut by Buffalo), and projects Pryor, Love, Deaderick, Weston, Richard, and Cohen.

Lee Smith becomes the 12th TE Belichick has drafted in 12 years.

1 (17) Nate Solder, T Colorado
2 (33) Ras-I Dowling, CB Virginia
2 (56) Shane Vereen, RB California
3 (73) Stevan Ridley, RB LSU
3 (74) Ryan Mallett, QB Arkansas
5 (138) Marcus Cannon, T TCU
5 (159) Lee Smith, TE Marshall

Did we just trade 193 to Philadelphia for 194???

Re: Pats' Offseason: At Least The Jets Lost . . . ?

Jason - just a couple of comments:

1) I love the trade down from 193 to 194 - at least we know that they can have some fun with the draft.

2) Cannot for the life of me understand the no defensive line/OLB help, but outside of that I love the draft of the Pats. Dowling, if healthy, is first round talent. With McCourty they could be set for a long time at the corners, same thing with Volmer and Solder. Like the two running backs - one a Marshall Faulk type, one a between the tackles bruiser. All set there and much younger. I like Cannon and Smith as well. Smith eventually takes over for Crumpler and Cannon is/was 2nd round talent. Expect him to recover completely. Depending on what Brady does Mallet could be trade bait in a few years. Still can't figure out who is going to rush the passer.

Re: Pats' Offseason: At Least The Jets Lost . . . ?

Okay, that's it for NE. I'm heading out and will let this process a bit. In the end it's 2 Ts, 2 CBs, 2 RBs, and a QB, TE, and OLB.

1 (17) Nate Solder, T Colorado
2 (33) Ras-I Dowling, CB Virginia
2 (56) Shane Vereen, RB California
3 (73) Stevan Ridley, RB LSU
3 (74) Ryan Mallett, QB Arkansas
5 (138) Marcus Cannon, T TCU
5 (159) Lee Smith, TE Marshall
6 (194) Markell Carter, OLB Central Arkansas
7 (219) Malcolm Williams, CB TCU

Don't have a problem with the o-lineman picks or dowling, but they wouldn't have had to pick dowling if they didn't strikeout on wheatley and butler in previous years. That's what's frustrating. This team had/has more holes than people think for a 14-2 team.

What I did not like was the back to back RB picks so early. They needed to address the pass rash and yet again did nothing.

I don't even mind the mallett pick either.

I think if we put all of those guys out there at once we can have a pretty strong D-line.

Maybe they figure with all the D-line drafted so early there will be a lot of guys at the next tier getting cut because the drafting team can't afford to keep them....they'll keep the 1st rounder and the backups but let the current starters go..? It's a theory.

Re: Pats' Offseason: At Least The Jets Lost . . . ?

Haynesworth??? Okay, that got my attention.

The guy has been a dog for the last two years -- or dogs**t, to be more accurate. I guess they think he'll turn it around.

Not sure how I feel about this one.

He can be a game changer in more than one way. I'm glad they did something on D, hopefully he changes it in a positive way

This could be a great deal as it is low risk-high reward in terms of cost. The chemistry though could be an issue if things dont work out, but in Bill we trust.

Wilfork, Warren, Haynesworth up front is pretty dominant though.

Re: Pats' Offseason: At Least The Jets Lost . . . ?

Any update on the status of Stroud? Herald said he was released, but the glode said no. Weei had it on its web page then took it down.
