Awesome first period between the Czechs and Slovaks. Jaromir Jagr looks friggin' awesome out there.

No surprise everything's going to form in hockey so far. I see the US finishing 5th or 6th overall, beating Norway or Latvia, and then facing off against either Sweden or Finland in the QFs.

My 1-12 would be:

1. Canada
2. Russia
3. Sweden
4. Finland
5. USA
6. Czech Republic
7. Slovakia
8. Switzerland
9. Germany
10. Belarus
11. Latvia
12. Norway

I have Russia winning the gold, Canada with the silver. Other than that, I have no clue. A hot goalie can ruin anything.

True. But what's starting to get boring is the fact that EVERY Olympics is the same: Russia, Canada, Finland and Sweden look good. USA, Slovakia and Czech Republic look promising. Maybe a little interplay between those seven, but that's it.

Having teams like Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Belarus and Latvia in the tourney is sort of pointless. It's nice to be there, I'm sure, but they're pretty much there to take up space. What I wouldn't give for countries like Norway and Germany to be producing top notch players in the next dozen years. International hockey is as predictable as European soccer domestic leagues.

Switzerland lost 3-1 to the US and Germany lost 2-0 to Sweden. Those teams might not have a shot at gold, but as we go along, you're gonna see plenty of competitive games. I could see any of the top five I listed winning gold in this format. That's not bad.

I don't even dare ask about women's hockey in the Olympics, then. :p

All you need is one Cinderella story to make scouts dig deeper into those countries to find promising players/etc (and you can't honestly tell me, even in this day and age, that they know about everyone who plays).

Either that, or get rid of the pro players, which results in what constitutes a pro (wink wink) like we had in the 70's, 80's, etc.

Remember the bouncyball Dream Team, and how no team could compete with us for (theoretically) decades? Ooops. The US made a mistake in braggadoccio there.

They're playing Cotton-Eyed Joe at a hockey game? Did they move the game to Starr?

And the Czech fans love it. I had no idea the Cotton-Eyed Joe was that big in Prague.

Me neither. Even after the replay.

Jagr may have gotten away with a hook. Call on Chara was questionable and then looked like a Slovak got tripped before the 3rd goal. Tough sequence for them!
