Aveson has to be the tournament MVP; congratulations to the Cardinals and Coach Houle; great D effort against the 5x3; they should keep the #1 ranking next week.
Off to Old Lyme
Congrats to Cardinals on winning the Panther/Cardinal Classic with a 3-2 win over Middlebury! Sounds like Sydney Avenson was outstanding in the contest.
Aveson was the difference tonight. Looking at 2 of the best teams at DIII. Will be fun to watch the next match between these two, once Middlebury gets their sea legs. Not bad play by Middlebury against 2 top teams that have been playing for awhile, compared to only 2 games against a middle of the row NESCAC team last weekend.
They do need to get a little better goaltending. Can't give up the weak one's against the good teams like what happened today.
Looks like Plattsburgh and Middlebury will be at the top of the rankings most, if not, all year, with Elmira near that level. Elmira just needs a little discipline and not take as many bad penalties. Amherst lacks depth and struggled in the 3rd both days, giving up 5 goals in the last stanza of both games. Hopefully they will not slide too far, but I think losing Plumer will hurt them more than they had anticipated. Hope they prove me wrong, as they had built a good program under Plumer!!
If you look at the boxscore ( http://collegehockeystats.net/1213/boxes/wamhplt1.n24 ), you'll see the goal by Kistner at 9:48 of the third, with a penalty to Bomsteim of Amherst at the same time. Apparently, they went back and correctly assessed the penalty after the goal (hence the face-off at center ice) and I assume adjusted the clock accordingly.
No Sinead Murphy anymore and only 16 skaters just doesn't have enough left in the tank to skate with the top teams for 60 minutes. Just look like they've ran out of gas last two nights.
I caught most of the Middlebury -- Plattsburgh game last night. From my Midd-biased perspective, it seemed that Middlebury out skated and out worked the Cards for a better part of the game, but couldn't finish on their scoring opportunities. The Cards counter attacked nicely and finished their chances. It was D3 women's hockey at it's best. Very impressed by both team's skill levels.
