Packers Offseason - Drama-free for the second straight year!

It kills me to see no Packers' posts for a few weeks, so I had to get this going.

I know people hammer TT for his lack of free agent signings since he grabbed Woodson and Pickett a few years back. One unheralded part of free agency is getting your guys signed when you know what you have. They've done it pretty well this offseason, although it wasn't without some risk in guaranteeing some money to guys nearing the end of their careers. In order of importance (in my mind anyway), overall I like the resignings of Collins, Clifton, Pickett, and Tauscher. I also liked seeing them let Kampman walk. He wasn't a fit. My only beef is not trading Kampman last offseason instead of letting him play out of position for a year and letting him walk. Even if he had stayed healthy, he's not a 3-4 OLB and I believe his ceiling wasn't overly high.

Collins was a necessity. The others may not have more than a year or two left, but you need size up front for the 3-4 and stability for Rodgers was a must. I don't believe he could make it thru another stretch like the first half of last season.

Now I feel like they aren't locked into anything in the draft. They can draft the best player left on their board at any number of positions, including LT, CB, OLB, S, RB.

You have to hand it to TT for consistency. He wants to build through the draft, and he's not taking the big money gambles by going for established veterans in free agency to fill our holes.

It'd be nice if he could make a few pickups here and there on the line and to get quality depth in the defensive backfield. But considering what a role defensive injuries played in the end of our season last year, I'm not having a heart attack over him simply "getting the band back together" for this season. As usual, it'll be interesting to see what TT does in the draft.

Did you see the new alternate jerseys the Packers unveiled last week?

I like the jersey and the pants. The helmet was always going to be tough to get to look right because they didn't have them back then obviously.
I always like the occasional throw back look, but with this particular uniform if you line 6 guys up next to each other it will look like the weekly Lotto drawing.

If there were awards for thread titles...

Kampman wasnt a good fit for the 3-4 and wasnt happy in that defense. Letting him go is the right decision for Kampman and for the Packers.
I would have liked them to have traded him though. At least they maybe they would have gotten something good out of it.

Someone forward this to Ted Thompson 7 months ago.

It's a good thing that the media honestly doesn't care about hard working, lunchpail types of players. If this had happened to Rodgers, Jennings, Grant or Woodson, ESPN would be all over this, and we would have jinxed the offseason with the thread title.

Spencer Havner, a backup tight end with the Packers, is facing DUI charges after a Saturday morning accident that left him with a fractured scapula, lacerations on his head and left arm, and multiple abrasions.

According to The Union in Grass Valley, Calif., Havner wrecked his motorcycle at approximately 2:45 a.m. Saturday. He was not wearing a helmet.

Havner was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he was arrested, the California Highway Patrol told The Union.

Havner is a native of Grass Valley. He was undrafted in 2006 out of UCLA before joining the Packers' practice squad. He made his debut in 2008, then played in all 16 Green Bay games last season, catching seven passes for 112 yards and four touchdowns.

His career highlight came during last year's wild-card playoff round when he caught an 11-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, helping the Packers tie the Cardinals in their epic game. Green Bay eventually lost in overtime, 51-45.

The accident brings back memories of a similar accident involving Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in 2006. Roethlisberger was seriously injured during an offseason accident when he was thrown from his motorcycle -- like Havner, he was not wearing a helmet. Roethlisberger cracked his head on a car windshield and required seven hours of surgery to repair a broken jaw and multiple facial injuries.

I'm not sure what will happen with this Havner situation. It's my understanding charges haven't yet been filed and his camp swears there is nothing to the DUI accusation. It would be ashame if this stupid decision puts him in jeopardy. They really like their mix at TEs. Although hard working guys of his body type to play the 3rd TE and special teams are out there, it would require another move where they didn't think they had to worry.

I'm happy with the pick. Everyone thought he'd be long gone by then, so there was value at a position of long term need. The other guys I would have considered there when the pick came up were OLBs Hughes or Kindle or CB Wilson. This was the right pick even though it remains to be seen whether he will help immediately.

But the best thing is the Packers didn't need someone to step in right away. They main guy they lost via FA......didn't even play last year! Plus, they get Harris back, so that will help the secondary for the time being. I suppose Kindle or Hughes could have come in right away, but they are set(for now) at almost all the other positions.

I loved the pick, too. Clifton is getting fragile. Tauscher is getting old. This needed to be done. I was actually kind of shocked, with Baluga, Hughes and the corner from Boise(drawing a blank on his name) all sitting there that TT did not trade down a couple picks, and still snag a pretty decent player at a position of need.
