Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

Penalty kill - great! Hare - great! Except for some temporary insanity near the end of the second period the team played very well and looked in control.

I don't know what that stuff at the end of the second was but for the rest of the game it was the best they have looked against the Birds in a long time. I went into the game thinking if Oswego doesn't beat itself they will be fine and they didn't. Every mistake they made someone was there to mop it up and when they did get through Hare was very strong. They look like they are peaking at the right time but we have all seen that before and I am sure Remy will remind us of what their past history is as the top seed.

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

If you had told me that Oswego would take 7 penalties to Plattsburgh's 4, I wouldn't have liked the Lakers' odds in this game, much less a 3-0 SO win.

Hare played a great game as did the defense. A couple of nice plays and shots in the offensive end and it was all you could have hoped for in a Lakers victory.

Still brings back nightmares every once in awhile.

Speaking of dreams, I had one about this game back on Monday night. I won't post what happened until after the game and if I'm right I'm buying up all of Miss Cleo's old ad spots.

I'm glad I wasn't right. In my dream the game was tied at 3 going into the final 5 minutes. Plattsburgh scored a PPG and wound up winning it 4-3.

Celebrate Oswego!!

You pretty much described the game right, but I would have preferred that your dream was right ;)

A great game, though, IMO, the crowd was the quietest they have been for a Plattsburgh/Oswego game - not that they approached Stafford silence, but not up to their past.

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

They may have been quiet because Plattsburg played a very quiet game. I kept waiting for them to get going... and they never did!

Neither team did, a nice goal on a faceoff, a successful 3 on 2 breakaway - which I would think was cool if I was an Oswego fan - but not a situation I would have wanted to have the farm relying on and the power play goal. All good points and none the result of anything controversial - but also nothing to consider "great" either. That said, the overall intensity of the game was great!!

And by "quiet" as I mentioned and LakerAlum09 noted, the atmosphere was still awesome, but for a total sell-out 3000+ arena, it wasn’t up to past performances.

I noticed this on the webcast. At one point in the 2nd period, I remember thinking to myself that I couldn't remember when/if the last "Lets Go Lakers" chant went up.

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

I wanted to give a shout-out to the great job done on the video broadcast. It was nice to watch a game without having to mute the sound. I thought the guys were as close to impartial as you'd want your team's announcers to be....very watchable from a fan of the opposing team! From their questioning of the penalty called on Plattsburgh resulting in the first Oswego goal (I couldn't tell), to their calling out Patrick Jobb for his antics at the end of the second period (which I agreed with their assessment), I thought the call was very professional and "down the middle".

I know they aren't calling the game for the pleasure of Plattsburgh fans, but it was nice to be able to hear commentary without swearing at your computer! Great job guys!

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

I thought that the energy level was pretty good for I stood right behind the student section. Very loud on the hits which were a good number of. A pretty good hockey atmosphere but not to the level as when the Great Lakers played in Romney. It would be great to hear the students reaction if Denny Snyder could for 1 last time call out the Oswego Great Lakers. He was the best!!!

First of all, I listened to the game last night on the radio and I must say, the PBP and commentary on WNYO was very good. One thing I took away from the game, granted I could only hear the action, was that it seemed like the Lakers' chances were generated by many players, including defensemen, while every Plattsburgh opportunity came from just 4 or 5 guys (Jensen (x2), Kudroch, Jobb, Mooney?, and Docking) There may have been a few other players mentioned but it just sounded like these were the only guys who ever had the puck. With that said, I think the difference between these two teams is the depth of Oswego. Four lines bring it offensively all game. The talent level for the top 10 guys is probably dead even, but the benefit of having the 3rd and 4th lines for Oswego eating up minutes and being a threat to score really makes the difference.

It was just one game, I could certainly be wrong. I would like to hear what some of the Platty folks thoughts are on the subject. Great game overall, I would love to see a rematch in a couple of weeks. We all know the Cards will be there, I hope the Lakers can handle their business and be there as well.

I did notice they played the Brass Bonanza during the sub shop's puck shooting promo.

Also, here is the take from Oswego County Today

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Another chapter was added to one of the most storied rivalries in college hockey as Andrew Hare registered 27 saves to give the No. 1-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team (20-2-2, 13-0-2 SUNYAC) a 3-0 win over fourth-ranked Plattsburgh (16-4-4, 11-3-1 SUNYAC) Friday night in front of a sellout crowd. It was Hare’s second shutout of the season that locked the top seed in the conference playoffs for the Lakers, who are unbeaten in six straight games against the Cardinals.

After a Plattsburgh interference penalty created a 4-on-4 situation, Tyler Leimbrock (Jr., Bolton, Ont.) got the ensuing faceoff back to Jesse McConney (Jr., Barrie, Ont.) at the blue line. McConney snapped a shot through traffic past Cardinal goalie Mathieu Cadiuex for his sixth goal of the season to get the home team on the scoreboard at 6:06 in the first.

With five minutes left on the scoreboard in the period, Plattsburgh nearly leveled the contest while on the power play, but Laker goaltender Andrew Hare (Jr., Burlington, Ontario) made two consecutive saves to keep the Cardinals from lighting the lamp. Minutes later, Jon Whitelaw (Jr., Huntsville, Ont.) doubled the margin to two goals when he was the beneficiary of a series of passes from Luke Moodie (Jr., Oakville, Ont.) and Paul Rodrigues (Jr., Etobicoke, Ont.) during a 3-on-2 rush.

Plattsburgh gained momentum at the end of the second period, though, when it gained a two-minute, two-skater advantage for the final 42.6 seconds of the frame, spilling over into the third period trailing by two goals. However, the Laker penalty-kill unit and Hare were up to the challenge keeping the shutout bid alive.

Oswego State took a three-goal lead at 7:05 in the third when a Zack Josepher (Jr., Wantagh, N.Y.) blast from the center of the blue line was deflected by a Plattsburgh defenseman right onto the tape of Chris Ayotte’s tape. Ayotte (Jr., Cornwall, Ont.) one-timed his shot top-shelf on Cadieux’s glove side with 23 seconds remaining on a Cardinal tripping penalty. Whitelaw was credited with the second assist. Plattsburgh tried to make a final charge, but was unable to get any shots past Hare.

Special teams were also a big component of the Laker win, as the power-play unit went 1-for-4, while fending off seven Cardinal power plays.

Andrew Hare moved to 17-2-2 on the year, while Cadieux finished with 25 saves in the losing effort.

Oswego State closes out the regular season tomorrow night against Potsdam at 7 p.m., as the program also recognizes its six seniors.

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

I wasn't able to watch every second of the game - as I had to pick up some friends who came in from out of town - but I thought the most impressive player on the ice for Plattsburgh last night was the defenseman Grace. His speed carrying the puck into the offensive zone was pretty remarkable.

I couldn't tell if he was "responsible" or on the ice for any of the Lakers' goals, but he's a guy that could present problems for Oswego if they meet again in two weeks.

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

Just an FYI, that piece from Oswego County Today is a reprint of the SID's press release. It's a shame the Lakers don't get more press around the area. The Oswego paper is terribly understaffed and the Syracuse paper doesn't care, unless the Lakers start wearing orange.

I work in the Watertown area and I've been wanting to get them to cover Oswego due to the large amount of students from Jefferson and Lewis Counties that go to school there. No such luck.

I don't know if its really "depth" or the lack of Plattsburgh finishers. Plattsburgh skated for the most part up and down with Oswego. To me it became fustration and mental. Even down 0-2 they kept pushing but just couldn't get a break. Missing empty nets, posts, and a few amazing saves by Hare just grew and grew and grew. You could hear and see it on the bench. Confidence was up so high with the 3rd period PP, and when they failed to convert it was a major let down. Had Plattsburgh just scored one goal in the first two periods, I think it would have been much more of a game. Lakers played very well and deserved to win. The better team for sure. A real treat to watch from a hockey standpoint. Also should add the Laker defense has been "shaky" over the years and their offense put so much pressure that they wern't ever really needed, not any more. The Oswego team defense was just outstanding. Skating back, picking up the weak side winger, everything was just an outstanding job. The penalties? The Josepher hit could have been a 5 minute, the Moodie (rough) was a joke of a 4 min...and if anything should have taken both Rodder and Docking? or who ever he "punched"......having said that, the call on Brenton (trip) was a joke as well. He hit hip on hip..clear as day, so be it. The reffs didn't have any real outcome on the game. The game was over after that long PP. Im not sure playing another 40 minutes Plattsburgh would have scored a goal at the rate they were playing "pretty" hockey. Oswego could play pretty hockey as all three goals were based off of great passing and moving to open ice. The first goal Chewy should probably have saved. The 2nd goal 3 Cardinals are stuck behind the Laker net when the puck is already at the blue line heading out (which one was Mr.Grace) resulting on pretty much a 4 on 2. Im not sure why Chewy was so late getting over, but that was a finishers goal. Had it been Plattsburgh it would have missed left, over, or hit the goalie in the chest..bank it. The third, PP...Chew goes down to block the first shot, it pops to the side for another blast and just couldn't recover and find it on time. You can see by his movement he had no clue where that puck went after the first shot.

Is Oswego clearly the better team, probably. Are they leaps and bounds better? Don't think so. Very beatable. That said I don't know if Plattsburgh has the mental toughness to do it. I think the loss of Ryan Craig really hurt the Cards. He's a big body in front of that net, and is one of the few snipers on the team that has been playing well lately. Would it have made a difference? Who knows, but I certainly like my chances with Craig in the lineup then with out.

Re: Oswego Vs Plattsburgh - 2012 Whiteout Game Thread

Watching last night's game one of the comments that my buddy and I made was about how well the defense looked compared to the last few years. Hare played a good game but I think the overall team D deserves just as much of the credit.
