Oswego state hockey 2017-18 - green, gold and teal - it's not business, its personal.

Re: Oswego state hockey 2017-18 - green, gold and teal - it's not business, its perso

I somehow, ridiculously, forgot that Trinity was 6th in the East. This title game should mean nothing, right? Oswego looks incredibly favored to get that last Pool C. For some reason I thought the Bantams were much higher.

Trinity lost to Colby today, so they fall into the Pool C group, but since they were ranked behind Oz last week, as you say, they should'nt beat us for the last Pool C spot.
Stevens Point lost to au-Claire yesterday, add to that the Utica win, the pool B bid, between Utica and Stevens Point just got a lot closer, could be a coin toss. Let's say (for fun/stress) they give the pool B to Utica over Stevens Point. Yikes... now we have only 3 teams from the west in the tournament. Oz, the current 4E would have to be chosen over Stevens Point the current 3W. In Brackotology, we would have SOS and RNK over Stevens, they would have WIN%.
If politics don't get involved and if the NCAA process is followed... I think we get the last spot. However there are a couple of big ifs in that last sentence. Anyways I wait patiently and hopefully that D3 Brackotology predicts we get the last spot.

Re: Oswego state hockey 2017-18 - green, gold and teal - it's not business, its perso

Some interesting notes from d3hky final Bracketology:

Oswego stays at 4E. Not so much a change but perhaps maybe a surprise that we aren't going to move Geneseo up to 4E. This is a really, really tight comparison that could go either way, but without getting into too many details we think the Lakers' 1-0-1 H2H edge serves more or less as a tiebreaker. We actually think the East regional committee will do the opposite, but we don't see it so we're not going to do it.

???? Isn't this supposed to be predicting what they THINK the committee will do?

2 - So we're down to the Lakers and Bantams, both worthy teams no doubt. If we call WIN and SOS a wash, which they are, we see Oswego with a nice advantage in RNK, but what about COP? Well let's check.

The pair have both played Nazareth, Hobart and Middlebury. Against that trio, Oswego is 1-2 and Trinity is 3-1-1, so it appears COP is an almost freakish wash with RNK and now we're stuck as the two did not play H2H this season. So what to do?

How about the secondary criteria? We know it's been used recently and it's another tool we have at our disposal, so let's use it. The big one there could be L25, or performance over the last 25% of the season. They're both 4-3. Great.

*They choose Trinity over Oswego because of the COP, and then explain why they picked Trinity's COP over Oswego's RNK*

Because with little else to go on we feel it's a better indicator of the direct relative quality between the teams: their performance against identical competition. Yes it's a small sample size and we'd really like to have more work with than this, but ultimately we have to decide based on...something. And our something is that against the same competition Trinity performed better than Oswego and we think that outweighs the Lakers' RNK egde.

The Bantams are in.

A note on this though: Oswego is already ahead of Trinity in the East regional rankings and the Bantams are coming off a 1-1 weekend so we assume the Lakers would maintain their edge. If that's the case, could they get in on that alone over Trinity by simply being taken off the board first? Certainly. Between that and how tight this is to begin with, there's plenty of hope for Oswego here -- and for the record we actually think the committte would take Oswego here, so how about that?

Once again, is this D3hockey.com's own selection, or how they think the committee will act? Because they made two decisions, one in favor and one against, Oswego that they said they think the committee will actually do the opposite of. So where does that leave us? Nowhere.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed in that. The article should be a prediction on what the committee will do.

They decided they were not in the business of making a prediction. They pointed out where the committee decision might go in a different direction. They are trying to sit on the fence and not make a decision. I wish the weighting of the criteria were more transparent.

He’s had a pretty good streak of getting it almost perfect so I wonder if the editorializing is hedging because it’s so close. The good news is you only need to wait a few hours to find out for real 😄

I still predict Oswego is in. Utica's advantage in WIN is seemingly propped up by their weak SOS. I can't see them passing Oswego. Trinity did not do enough this weekend to pass Oswego. The only scenario I see Oswego not getting in is if they take Utica over UWSP for Pool B (which would shock me). Then I think Oswego loses the last Pool C bid to the Pointers. I still think the Pointers get Pool B and Oswego gets the last Pool C.

I understand. I'm just disappointed in that decision.

Marian with the Pool C bid. Not Trinity. Not Oswego. Not even Utica.

Marian.

Marian?

Marian??

Marian???

Maybe they just said "Screw the numbers, we need the only West team left to pair up with Augsburg."? (all four quarter final games have their pairs conveniently* close together.) Or 20 wins is a new "smoke filled" criteria for Pool C?

* "conveniently: in a way that fits well with particular needs, activities, and plans."

Marian was 4th in the West Regional Rankings before last weekend, in which they didn't play.

Of the eight teams vying for the Pool C bids, they had the 6th best win% (.732). Oswego and Trinity were last with .731. So...identical pretty much.

They were 1-4 against teams that were in the regional rankings, with three losses against St. Norbert, a loss against Adrian, and a win against Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Marian is suspiciously absent from the West stat sheet after the last public rankings. I was hoping to compare SOS between Oswego and Marian.

SOS Marian and Oswego, Marian .523, Oz .528, Dead heat on win, RNK, Marian .200, Oz .667,
Utica and Trinity also had better stats, with the exception of UC’s SOS.
So much of today’s selection is technical, but we have to accept their decision. We felt Trinity or Oswego would have received that last at large.
No disrespect to Marian, best of luck in the tournament. As well as all the remaining teams

The NCAA actually had Oswego 7th in the regional rankings, behind both Utica and Trinity. So they weren't really even in the discussion. So...

The two whiteout weekend losses dropped them from 1st to 4th
The Fredonia loss kept them at 4th
This past weekend of having other teams in conference championships and not playing dropped them to 7th

It's not about your body of work, it's who looks pretty at the end it would appear again. What is supposed to be an open process is still very much a smoke filled room.

Where did do you get that information?

Well I guess we had a great 23 game season. The last 3 games were are down fall. Our team had great hustle, determination, grit and chemistry. Hopefully Coach can get 3 d'man with an offensive minded one and 3-5 forwards who have some good ice awareness and the ability to put the puck in the net. Natural scores are hard to find. Next season hopefully will turn out better. I would recommend that Whiteout Weekend we have 2 other teams for that or if we have Potsdam and Platty we call it Washout Weekend.
