Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

*Yawns*

Alright, so in a weeks time, when a Lakers fan doesn't have Lakers hockey to observe, he can update his leadership status in his local scout troop, initiate studying of an Easter cantata, complete paperwork filing for AF OCS, and polish off George Orwell's 1984 (*shudders*) - amongst other various daily observations and tasks. And, to a certain degree, tolerate and accept that there isn't any hockey in Oz this weekend...

but I'm dying to see what comes out of next week. Bet this forum will be lighting up once more, when the time comes.

Meanwhile, OSU Men's Basketball begins action tonight in the NCAA D3's version of March Madness - keep pulling for those Lakers!

Here's a surprise: squeakball gets extra attention as soon as a hockey program steps aside for a moment. Watch out, because increasing popularity in a basketball program is often what leads to the demise of a good hockey program. There's a reason the respect for that other winter sport is pretty low around here ;)

Plattsburgh's Men's Basketball team had a pretty successful pair of seasons a few years ago, and the hockey team is only just beginning to recover in terms of student attendance ...

From experience, I think part of the reason why basketball is so popular at Plattsburgh, other than recent success, is the proximity of the gym on campus compared to the hockey rink. If the Staff was as close to the dorms as Memorial Hall Gymnasium was, you better believe students would be packing that place. I think proximity creates such a disconnect for students when it comes to hockey. Its unfortunate. I wish I was still part of the committee to try and draw students to athletic events. I would suggest 3 or 4 shuttles specifically from the dorms to the rink, free of charge, and vice versa.

Interesting. Given the long winters and diverse fan bases I would think they would complement each other.

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

I agree with the whole proximity thing...were they to put games in the campus center (portable floor, etc - HORRORS) one might think attendance would be huge...NOT...it's not a multiple-purpose arena...it's a RINK...scheduling problems aside, let's see those nimble campus maintenance dudes lay down the floor and take it up without killing the ice in the 8 hours everyone talks about (4 hrs down, 4 hrs up).....really.

Take the money, set up free pre game dinner at Laker Hall and coordinate big busses foe the 2 mile trip....start a pep band, have a party.....you'd get real attendance and be $$$$ ahead...

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

Btw there were over a thousand at Laker last night....tonight should be nuts...

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

Perhaps they have to go all the way to Sweden...not because they want to...?:D:rolleyes:

International athletes in D3 usually comes from a personal connection - a coach who played there or brings teams over to compete, an alum who faciltitates (scholarship) students from a particular country or region etc. Manhattanville has several players from the Ukraine - they came from US prep schools...

I agree with LakerEagleLover, its that other teams have to look elsewhere since Oswego is getting some of the best D-III and overlooked D-I prospects in Ontario in order to get players of the same caliber.

gonna suck watching the birds play tonight, I wonder how theOswego players will feel watching it on the web......motivation perhaps??? Should be a great game, lets hope the reffing doesnt play a part, Loudhorns, any idea who will be wearing the jailhouse uniforms tonight, and what will ya do if ya get Murphy and St Louis???

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

Gosek should have his men in their warmups sitting in the front row at Laker Hall cheering their fellow Lakers into the Sweet 16.......

2 for the price of 1?

It'll suck not watching OSU hockey, but for my part, since the Lakers aren't playing Platty right now, I shall remain impartial and neutral, and simply expect a good game. A lot of NCAA expectations will be riding on this game tonight, plus in Vermont, Wisconsin, and the Southern Tier.

Cards, it goes without saying that fans need something else to watch if hockey is on hiatus - what with spring break kicking off next Friday, "squeekball" or hockey, few students will ever be paying attention again, this academic year, to these sports (barring a televised Final Four in either case). So tonight's a last bash for the SS at Laker, and the hockey loyalists will be present next week, but ever so fewer in size.

And who knows? Perhaps hockey fans turning out to see squeekball tonight might be able to recruit a few interested parties to turn out the following saturday. The crowds are diverse, but we all cheer for the "Lakers", after all.

or have them skate while the audio to Platty-Freddy blares over the rink speakers?

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

When the Saturday game is announced, also announce the dorms will stay open another 24 hrs and every student who stays gets in.....
